A good game should have at least 5 solid dungeons instead of many independent shrines.
please write an essay defending this?

When he does, will you be willing to give him the same favor? Personally I disagree with where he's coming from - seeing as Zelda's idea of a dungeon means showing every way an item can be used so that you never have to use it again - but can see the merit in a more dungeon-centric design (I'd be a fool not to seeing as I've made many an RPG with oodles of dungeons before).
What I think BotW is missing with its many shrines approach is some sort of storyline reason for why you're tackling each one. The reason you went inside Lord Jabu Jabu's belly was to rescue Ruto, while you threw caution to the wind at the Dodongo's Cavern to feed the Gorons. With BotW, its open world approach only sets a precedence that if there's one of these things in the world, you should do it, and likewise for every other one you find. It's like finding a cross patch of dirt in Animal Crossing: something is buried there, therefore dig. Does it enhance the experience? Not really, because the main draw of Animal Crossing is seeking out decorations to fill your house with, and typically this means doing little favors for your townsfolk in order to receive new decorations.
Your quest to drive isn't ultimately fulfilled by the presence of another faceless shrine. Like take Morrowind for example: that game had nothing but faceless shrines. Once you knew which ones contained the good stuff, you could (and frankly, should) avoid every other part of the world and be perfectly fine. There wasn't ever a time when an egg mine or an ancestral tomb was important to the story or an NPC's sidequest.
But at least none of these open world games forewent the rules and goals that ultimately define a "game", which is more than I can say about Everything*, which is an engine test being sold off as a completed game (no, every model clipping through everything else is intentional).
*"A must-play game"? Wow, how much did they get paid to write this article?

Well, you see, that confuses me because I'm of the belief that you don't ask anyone to do anything you're not at least willing to first try to do yourself. Without you willing to meet Davenport halfway, why should he do the same for you by writing your essay?
for me, it's 3 solid dungeons, 2 semi-permeable dungeons, 2 liquid, 3 gaseous, and as least one in a high-pressure plasma state.

i'm not the one who made a bizarre assertion about gam mak ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(i don't even know why i'm responding to this -- there's no way to really react to statements that have no substance)
edit: now that's what i call dungeoneering, kentona!
edit2: i have a feeling ff4 can fit these requirements. that cave to the summon world is definitely semi-permeable, and i think we could make a case for the towers of babil and zot to be high-pressure plasma states
Dungeon crawl is a bit antiquated of a way to punish Link now that you can just cook rocks in a pot and force him to eat them.
The game looks like so much fun and every LP I've watched of it has the players saying that it's exactly what they wanted in a Zelda game, how much they love it and how it -feels- so much like OoT and LTTP. Quite frankly, I can deal with weapons breaking when there's just so many replacement weapons around, and while there are a few clunky-looking things, I think the idea of shrines (waypoints) is a great one.
...I want a switch ;.;

I'm playing it on Wii U which is just as good.
Anyway I see a number of people talking about the weapon breaking stuff.
At first it worried me but I've literally never run out of weapons you always find more. I haven't fully formed my opinion on the weapon breaking system despite the fact that I've played like half the game already lol. I think it has both benifits and drawbacks in terms of gameplay. What I will say is it only real issue I had with it was that early on in the game I was searching for a place that could maybe repair weapons but I couldn't find anything like that and eventually I just embraced the inevitable fragility of it. And as I've said I don't run out of weapons. I'm a walking arsenal right now. It's worth mentioning that you can expand the number of weapons you can carry and you can store some weapons in a house that you buy.

Whoa, wait, some people don't think this game is amazing?
It's not the typical waypoint to waypoint open world game. It's an adventure.
If you don't watch Game Maker's Toolkit, here's a simple summary:

Am I just missing out on the latest thing to hate?

It's not a bad game. I wouldn't even say Zelda 1 and 2 are bad games. Dated, but not bad games. They're enjoyable and challenging. I'd give worst Zelda game award to something like Four Sword Adventure maybe.
I do like to shit on BotW a lot though. The story is the worst. The world is pretty sameish and boring. Like, needlessly big. To the point that you often travel empty areas to reach one of the many "collectable travel points". It stinks of the worst parts of the Open World genre. The dungeons are jokes. The weapon damage is just terribly stupid. However, I'm still playing it (albeit slowly), so there's half-decent gameplay controls (minus the motion Garbage).
Worth a playthrough. It's no Grand Theft Auto V or Skyrim even.

I enjoyed it so far, but there are so many damn good games coming out this year + I barely can play video games lately. I just like it for resembling an exploreable ghibli film with some pretty cool multiplicative mechanics.
The story and the VA is really fucking bad though. Not that Zelda is known for amazing writing or anything, but even Wind Waker and OoT had likeable characters and sentimental moments. The whole 100 year thing to explain why you collect story events out of order is a good solution to open world storytelling but uh, I'm not gonna bother getting that shit.

Just to emphasize my last point I took some screen shots.
Unfortunately I took this image without my two favorite weapons the Edge of Duality and the Kpinga AKA TriLizal Boomerang. Why? Because I use them when I have them but despite the fact that they break I know where to go to get more of those weapons when I want them.
But as you can see I'm not losing weapons constantly in my inventory is ussualy full as seen here.
PS dont want to confuse people so just mentioning that even though you are seeing a description of the Master Sword thats not the sword I'm equiped with.

Yes delicious Chocolate. Speakin of, you can't simply rely on the Master Sword. I can't recall if I said this before but the Master Sword has to recharge after heavy use. Also the Master Sword doubles in strength when near Ganon or anything tainted by Ganon. It can also shoot blade beams if you are at full health like in the old games. to do so use the throw button.
PS I now have much more shield slots not because I use shields for defense much but because I love shield surfing. Plus I recently found out that you can shield surf on snow and sand without damaging your shields :D
Master-Sword obtained:
I'm ready to face Calamity Ganon alone. (15+ hearts)
Breath of Wild Final score: 9.8/10
Ocarina of Time 3D: 9.9/10
Link between Worlds: 9.3/10
Majora Mask 3D: 7.9/10

The game is great, the mixed opinions occurs because the game changed a lot of really good things in the zelda game, the weapon is breakeable, the itens like hook shot or other dont exist and dont open more world location to explore.
Is a great game, but i prefer the traditional zelda, with weapons unbreakeable and good itens that you use in the game a lot of times.
