I love both Discord and Slack, Discord has been more active recently than Slack, but the majour difference I'd say would be the voice chat feature of Discord, and the fact Discord is more interconnected and less focused, so it's easy to change between RMN and another RM Discord group for example, but on Slack it's difficult to switch and you'll mostly use just RMN Slack. Plus Discord has unlimited file space, doesn't delete old messages and has a dark theme.

They're both great and I'd reccomend them both over IRC any day.

I keep forgetting you can install things on your compy. I always just use the browser-based option.

Not an option with a computer with 2kb of ram whose browser consistently crashes and also has to be closed whenever I open photoshop or something : P

Discord right now is using 70mb ram, Firefox is using 800mb.

Also the voice chat is entirely optional and so far I haven't seen a single channel that makes use of it more than a seasonal gimmick twice a month or something.

By the way the archiving messages function is incredibly useful, as I often just ctrl+f to get into whatever I've discussed with any person I'm working with. It really is a bliss.

Slack is a square peg in a round hole for community use; it excels quite well for office work and that's it. I hope Google's new Hangouts can supplant it.

Discord is probably the most appropriate, but its circle-jerk gaming lingo is embarrassing. Its UX is also all over the map.

IRC is old, solid, and works. But it's barrier-to-entry is aggravatingly high.

One shared thread between the three options: all their clients are garbage. It's a sad state of affairs when mIRC is still such a widely used client. And the other two are built with Electron, which is cool but bloated tech. There is very little reason for Discord/Slack to be as fucking huge as they are. Same goes with the new Twitch app.

The last good piece of chat software was Google Talk.

Basically, all the options are shit.

Existential question: why is real-time chat even needed? Does that help people develop better games? Is it outside the realm of productivity and merely a way to waste time?

I think real-time chat is cool. Just saying it's helpful to figure out why it's there rather than checking a bullet point.

Also if you figure out why it's needed, that could help decide the best way to meet those requirements.

Mostly I use realtime chat to gab about jazz with random peeps with semi-simmilar interests.
It is an efficient way of exchanging quick information as well as leisurely chatting, and it exists out of people's demands for it.
If someone is unhappy with the existance of such, the forums are where they've always been lol

As I mentioned before about my brazilian gamedev group, instant snapshot sharing followed by instant feedback is pretty much part of my workflow, now, as opposed to posting a thread on Pixelation and it being not replied after 3 days

I can also talk about my game instantly instead of waiting for over a week for the submission to be accepted, all in all its really useful to have both forms of communication easily reachable.

Discord's been useful for me in creating assets, showing clients those assets, and getting quick feedback on 'em, where things like email would be more unwieldy.

Admittedly, my main use of it has been faffing about, but it's very convenient for group projects.

Can't compare it with Slack or IRC, as I hated both interfaces so much I never used them for long.
it's a place to go to pass judgement on the lesser members who only consume the forums and site.

Well, soon you'll be seeing links to Discord on RMN. So there's that...
