They're about equally awful. They should not be allowed to proliferate until there are enough of them to qualify as a genre.

I actually agree (now) that YM fan games shouldn't be a genre, Although it already is a sub genre, whether you like it or not, sorry. but the notion that it shouldn't be something simply because you personally don't like it is idiotic. Your personal preferences don't dictate reality.

Pancaek don't you know that the first rule of critiquing games is that if you personally don't like something everyone else should hate it too and it must have no greater value or entertainment factor in it :/
Golly, I forgot about that. My bad u-u
Can't wait for the Furry Hitler Yume Nikki Fangame.

Anyway, Yume Nikki Fangames seem like they should be a subgenre of adventure games/walking simulators. Their most notable feature is their lack of gameplay. For the most part, all you do is wander around and collecting things, with the occasional puzzle to solve. It's a bare bones adventure game, an exploration scavenger hunt with lots of walking. If you add a certain amount of mechanics to them or you just give the game more linearity, you go back to having a regular adventure and/or puzzle game. So I'd put it under "subgenre". :0
Guys, we don't even have a romance genre on our list yet...

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't think the question was "Should this genre be listed on RMN?" Being a genre or not isn't dependent on what RMN's list of sorting options says, it's just a thing that happens on its own when enough of a certain type of game exists.

If the question was "Should people keep making these games until they become their own genre?" then the answer is obviously no, they're fucking terrible. If the question was "Are there already enough of these games to consider them a genre?" then the answer is, God, I hope not, but unfortunately probably yes.

You just don't get it, LockeZ. You just don't geeeeeeeeeeeeet iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Yume Nikki, mechanically, is indeed a walking simulator. That's not why the game is popular and such a source of inspiration. It has atmosphere and tension. The points of interest become more interesting as a result of the gameplay's mundanity. Rephrased, unique things encountered feel more compelling because you get used to the things you've been seeing. The game also has such a large variety of environments that you never know what's around the corner until you dare to look. It seems like a random teleport maze at first, but the connections are consistent, and the more familiar you are with it, the more you understand what leads where and where else still needs explored. Not to mention the surreal nature of most of these locales. Because these worlds are what the protagonist sees in their sleep, they are part of their subconscious, and it's natural human curiosity that bids us to try and make sense of it. Also, the bike increases your walk speed.

But I know that's not your thing because you believe games are only games as long as they're engaging the player through mechanics. That's only one type of thing, dude, and until you can admit that it's a matter of taste, you'll always have this hangup.

Can you actually articulate what makes them awful? Because the only connecting threads between Furry Hitler porn and Yume Nikki Fangames I can see is "things that LockeZ doesn't like" and if things could only exist by the merit of you liking them, this would be a very different world.

Yume Nikki Fangames are, indeed, comparatively light on gameplay compared to other games on this very site, and while I don't find myself craving them often, sometimes just wandering around through a weird dream landscape and collecting things can be pretty rewarding. It's not so dissimilar to your own flower bubble game except with more surreal landscape (tho, yeah, your game has a lot more gameplay).

I'm not even arguing that Yume Nikki Fangames necessarily need to be their own genre. I'm just really fucking tired of the argument that "I don't like X type of game so people shouldn't be making them" without any objective facts to back any of it up. It's lazy and stupid, and discounts the fact that A) there are obviously people who enjoy making certain types of games, B) there are obviously people who enjoy playing them.

Yes, the question was "Are there already enough of them to consider them a genre?" ...More or less. I wasn't suggesting we make them an RMN genre.

I think Unity hit the nail on the head with the rest of what you said.

I remember a time when I used to discredit entire genres because I personally didn't like them. But I realized that the Earth kept spinning with or without me, y'know?

We're not disparaging your rights. We're asking you to substantiate your opinion with more than generalizations, or to at least admit the game isn't the sort of thing that interests you. If it was objectively "awful" and had no value as a work, it wouldn't have the following that it does.

GIVE IN LOCKEZ

Then we're done here.
I don't know... These fan games are rather too limited/narrow-minded/not broad enough (for lack of a better word) to be considered a genre. And I'd suggest checking the definition of genre: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genre

Anyway, the polls have spoken.
