OLD/LOST RPGMAKER GAMES - SEGNIN'S RARE/OBSCURE RM GAMES REQUEST TOPIC

Posts

Hey guys! My name's Graeme, and I run the 2 Left Thumbs youtube channel. I've known about RPG Maker for years, but have only recently started to dive deeper into the history of the engine.

I've recently been playing games like OneShot, Fear & Hunger, and Jimmy and Pulsating Mass. Games that lack that distinct RPG Maker look, and really show off the awesome content that can be made with this tool! Now that I've peaked behind the curtain, and realize the massive creativity in the community, I am so excited to see what else is out there.

Now people have been recommending old games like OFF, Space Funeral, and Ghosts of Aliens. I feel like it's put this hunger in me to dig up more older RPG Maker content that have been nearly lost to the ages, and that people may have been missing out on all these years!
This page seems incredibly useful for people who already know what game their looking for, but I'm just lost in a sea of MediaFire links. Could people please recommend some games to me? They can be Adventures, RPG, or turn-based. But I largely care about original stories, creative projects, and rewarding experiences.

Any help or recommendation would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone!

EDIT: sort of related. I know I haven't been around much but I wanna give a special shout out to anyon175 as well. His involvement has been sort of pivotal for me and I really hope we get an opportunity to meet more members from other rpgmakers communities from other parts of the world - like, it's not just preserving games, it's meeting the people who play these games too.

Hey, thanks once again LordBlueRouge and Darken.
I really hope I'll be able to help you guys some more in preserving those games. That is something really cool we can do and I certainly wanna help.

I'll also be checking RMARCHIV.tk out soon enough and perhaps bring more games over there too.

Yea, now that's a tough one.

Like you said there's a lot of games out there and I don't know if the older RM games will match your definitions of rewarding, but I guess I would start with these:

* A Blurred Line: https://rpgmaker.net/games/92/
* Final Fantasy Endless: https://rpgmaker.net/games/6256/
* Legion Saga (I, II, III): https://rpgmaker.net/games/8717/
* The Way: https://rpgmaker.net/games/507/
* Kindred Saga: http://www.mediafire.com/file/z486br3yg3d0g3d/kindredsaga.exe/file
* Alter Aila Genesis: https://rpgmaker.net/games/272/

If you don't mind the really old ones, there is one RM95 game I personally recommend that would be Baldy's Big Day. It's quite funny and full of surprises. If you are feeling adventurous it's worth a shot.
Hi 2LeftThumbs, welcome to the thread! It's not often we find people asking for recommendations.

Based on the handful of games you've mentioned I'd probably suggest Wooby RPG, The Sword and the Fish, Homeland, Rainbow Nightmare (not sure if dl is available), Shichimenshouken, Wilfred the Hero, and everyone's favorite... DonaldFuckRPG (half joke suggestion half national treasure that we deserve). An underappreciated game is actually Aptos Adventures which is probably the most bizarre RM game I've played. Actually cannot find a download for this game anywhere, so might be worth sending out a request for.

As for RPGs with "original stories" it's hard to parse that I guess and highly subjective. But Diary of a Madman, Angels of Exodus, Sunset over Imadahl (on RMN), Light Prism, Zephyrus and the Kingdom of Heaven, 10,000 Bulletz, Nigsek, Three the Hard Way all have an "original voice" or at the very least interesting settings you wouldn't find in most RPGs.

We really do need to get some kind of proper archival/recommendation system in place to better give people an idea what these old games have to offer. But we're a bit busy these days.

As a side note, someone preserved some old GamingW downloads: https://silbinarywolf.itch.io/rpg-maker-preservation
I guess I should clarify, it doesn't need all 3 of "original stories, creative projects, and rewarding experiences." Any 1 of those would be fine! And even then, I meant that to be general rather than limiting.
Rewarding could be a heartfelt story, fun gameplay, a sense of accomplishment or discovery. Maybe my phrasing wasn't as broad as I hoped?

The recommendations are greatly appreciated! I'll try to check out as many of them as I can :)
Yeah like anyon mentioned I would strongly recommend The Way and A Blurred Line as matching those descriptors the most. They really are the best of the old RM era.
I'd recommend you check out the 2014 list of "Favorite RM Games of All Time."
https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/14780/

A couple of things to keep in mind about the list:
- Most of the games included are not finished. That doesn't make them less fun to play, but don't be surprised if some just suddenly end.
- While I would recommend virtually all of the games near the top of the list, some of the games further down are definitely more fondly remembered than actually good. So don't get discouraged if you try something out and think "that's crap." As someone who's been floating around the RPG Maker sphere since 2003, trust me when I say there's a reason those games deserved the praise they did, but maybe don't start by going through a "best of" 2001 releases.
- These won't all be as amazing as OneShot.
- If you can't find a game, ask the thread! We should really ensure we have a download of all these games anyway.
- Since the list is from 2014, I'd definitely call this a "classics" list. Don't consider it representative of the modern era.

Some notes about the games:
- While I believe A Blurred Line deserves its top billing, it really hasn't aged well. Go ahead and try it out, but keep in perspective that the original came out only a little after the Sega Dreamcast.
- While I'm on the topic of A Blurred Line, its creator, Lysander86, has four games on the list.
- Ara Fell is now complete and available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/440540/Ara_Fell/
- Starless Umbra is way down on the list, but is truly a remarkable feat of RPG gaming. The story (from what I've played) is meh, but just an outstanding experience otherwise. It's pretty hard to find a copy now days (starlessumbra.com sadly just has the first chapter and prologue), but I'd definitely recommend you give it a look sometime in the future.
- Legion Saga on the list actually refers to the trilogy, not the game. If you try it out, start with Legion Saga II, which was easily the strongest in the trilogy.
- A similar thing is true of Laxius Power. The entry on the list is for the series, not the specific game. The first game is terrible, while the third game is pretty decent (if you enjoy the type of game play it provides).
- Exit Fate is fantastic and definitely worth the look.
- Shout out to both Sunset Over Imdahl and Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis for being less like a convention rm2k(3) RPG.

Some games to consider that aren't on the list:
- Velsarbor is the most technically masterful rpg2000 game ever made. And despite being entirely in German is still totally worth the play. Seriously.
- Legacies of Dondoran (all original music)
- Paradise Blue (all original art)
- Pirates (it's a side scroller, not an RPG, and is pretty sweet)

I'm really excited to see a YouTuber interested in rpgmaker. I know a ton of rpgmaker garbage gets created, but there's also some pretty cool stuff too.

I wanted to mention this before I forget: Thanks Darken ♥!

I was really hoping Faust would come around and regale us with more stories about Gamingw. :(
Eitherway, it's really cool to have Santa's Sled Racing again.
...I'm adding this to the most wanted/rare requests section because TGA and Tau have been looking for this game since 2012 and earlier, but I also wanted to mention it here since goji requested it recently - figuring out where to find this game, may also help us look for other lost rpgmaker games as well.

It's called "deadly rivals" an rpgmaker2000 made back in 2003 by dragon slayer.

The demos usually goes by these file names:

"g-deadly.zip" german demo
"d-gdeadly.zip" game disk version

this game, may just be on a megaupload server somewhere or like the japanese demo for RelicWalker,
access to it, may be limited because the site was made in a different language.
I don't normally make posts like this. But I'm hoping sharing this info may boost it's signal or something.
I'm currently downloading all these mediafire links to ensure that they are mirrored.

Is ca. 15 GB worth of games.

Though somehow jDownloader also found torrents and some ISOs somehow. Guess some kind of deep search on mediafire discovered them... Need to do some more filtering before this is useful.

Edit: Figured it out. The main source of garbage is this post with DMCA takedowns: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/22883/?post=833153#post833153

Thanks Ghabry!♥

Yeah, I apologize for not getting around to this sooner. This collection of games should also have some of the games you guys mentioned here that I mentioned I was gonna upload awhile back:

https://rmarchiv.tk/board/thread/60?page=1

Eitherway, I hope what we were able to gather here, has helped you guys!

EDIT: Were you guys able to grab Davy Jones' collection of games on multimediaxis.de? I checked there awhile back, looking for a particular game and I noticed that his database has moved - Unfortunately I can't speak German so I don't know what happened on multimediaxis.de.

Oh thats great, will check this.

EDIT: Were you guys able to grab Davy Jones' collection of games on multimediaxis.de

I have a copy of that collection but providing this mess is not worth it, all games from that list can be found well organized on rmarchiv.tk.

The mods had to remove the link because MMX is very strict about copyright violations.

German law problem, there is nothing like "Fair use". They have to remove links to stuff when they are made aware of copyright violations well and to be clear almost any German game has SNES asset rips or stolen Music. They got so many hints about stuff in the MEGA Box, that they had to remove the link.

rmarchiv community is currently not hostile enough, so we don't have any copyright trolls yet which report all games. ^^
That's an accurate description of the situation at Multimediaxis. A few months ago, I grabbed everything that looked remotely interesting from their now shut down Mega database, and I was really underwhelmed. German developers simply don't grasp the essence of classic JRPGs. I can also confirm that the games found in said database can be downloaded from rmarchiv.tk (possibly minus some really obscure demo versions). While I'm all for preservation, you won't miss out on completed quality JRPGs if you just ignore these old German games. By the way, German is my native language, which makes it even harder for me to endure most of the RPG Maker games made in Germany.
Thanks Ghabry, KyleLascar!♥

I didn't realize how complicated/tricky copyright law was in other countries...I had plans to promote RMARCHIV.TK but maybe remaining an unknown works to our advantage? Let me know what you guys think about this...

But yeah, Multimediaxis wasn't great, but I did find a few long lost games there from other communities, which I couldn't find anywhere else, which is why I ask. So thank you for backing those up Ghabry!

One day, it'd be really cool to have something like the demo for Velsarbor available in English, especially since those guys went onto create CrossCode - It's one of the examples I'd like to use, if people ask, if anyone using rpgmaker has moved onto more ambitious projects.

Thank you guys for your input, it means a lot.

EDIT: Also, please keep up the great work with easyrpg, really happy to see the new update.
Hey guys,

Recently I found a QHeretic's Exile Demo, if you guys wanna check it out.

More importantly though, I wanted to ask if anyone has the most recent version of this game. I have been looking for a version that looks like the one in the link bellow:

https://web.archive.org/web/20090831124444/http://geocities.com/enterranet/project-exile.html

The one in the first link is much shorter than the one in the screenshots in the second link. So I'm guessing QHeretic possibly released this at some point.
It likely exists given that demo is dated 2002 and Don Miguel mentions Exile as early as 2000:

author=DonMiguel's news archive
9.07.2000:

Note to all losers who shi$$ing at my IRC channel: Calm down! Just make a good RPG then ppl will respect you... but you'll never beat the great RM2K RPG "EXILE" by QHeretic. Well... may be I'm wrong. Just try to make a better game. Losers!
P.S. My Channel Operators (@OPS) are best OPs in the whole World! 8-) Thanks guys and girls for all!!! 8-)

But yeah interesting find considering most RM games change very rapidly throughout development usually.

Edit: Actually I might have misunderstood, you're saying the screenshots from 2000 show a much more content filled game than the available download?

Yes, actually the files I have from this demo date 2002-ish, so that's why the released date says '2002'. I think this Demo actually dates from far back in the year 2000 and there might be a more recent Demo.

EDIT: Well, considering it's QHeretic we are talking about, that Kindred Saga Battle System Demo I had for example, it was an old release that had more content than the most recently released one. So yeah, go figure.
So basically I realize a lot of the games on the list barely have any coverage or descriptions. I started a project to address that, the goal is to give every game on the archive list some screenshots, a written impression and a 10-30ish minute youtube video. I've made this a fairly automated process, but I still need to make it a regular habit.

https://rpgmakerhistoria.home.blog/

https://twitter.com/RPGMHistoria
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzy0DxCmuzIUT2BkCOW2Jhg

It's all condensed in a wordpress blog mainly, but the main goal is to document as much as I can so that they become more permanent to google and general web crawlers. We'll see how it goes.

Wow, that`s really awesome Darken. There are a lot of games to cover of course, but I`m sure these great games you`ll be covering will not be forgotten.

I myself have been trying to upload some games on RMArchiv and when I can I also upload a (silent) walkthrough of these games on my channel. I made little progress so far, but one by one at least I show little bits of these games for those who are interested.

Good luck though, because there sure are more games than Archivists.
Yeah the master list alone has over 200 games, though the number is including some dupes and games that might already be on RMN anyway. Suffice to say it's gonna take awhile... Those walkthroughs are pretty helpful supplemental wise actually.

Was putting together a glossary and realized it's the RM2K3 unofficial translation's anniversary today. It's a miracle!
This is kind of a reverse request, but it's the reason I REGISTERED in the first place. I have a game called Ghosts of Aliens, and I really, really don't want it to die, but every time I've hunted through old forums for requests of it, the links to it are always dead. I'd been searching for YEARS for this until I found it... inexplicably three folders deep into my Linkin Park music collection. I'm slightly ashamed, but if this inexplicable game was going to inexplicably exist in some inexplicable location, that's where it'd inexplicably be.

And the copy of Ghosts of Aliens I have is... broken. It's called, 'Ghosts of Aliens lvfix,' but what it essentially does is completely ruin the scaling of the game. I'm... not entirely sure why. The game is basically a shitpost before the word shitpost was invented, but it's a beautiful shitpost, so I dunno.

Either way, I dunno if anyone might know the authors or anything, but I do have a copy backed up on a USB drive and on cloud storage right now, but I'm wondering if anyone has an unbroken version of Ghost of Aliens that they might be able to share instead.
