12/12/2012 AKA THE MAYAN PROPHECY
Posts
I think the Toltecs held this date signifigant as well. Though their philosophy, if I recall, says that the date marks a turning point in human consciousness. This shift, allegedly, will turn us toward one of two directions. Mass enlightenment and species longevity or horrible burning death.
I'd be less inclined to believe this if I hadn't heard that the Mayans also predicted the date of their civilization's demise to the day...and were RIGHT. I haven't checked my sources on this, but if they could pinpoint the end of their way of life, then what are the chances they didn't pull it off for the rest of the world?
It would royally suck if the world ended in 2012, but there's not a whole lot to be done about it, either. Here's hoping all these signs of the apocalypse and prediction theories aren't correct...
...though wouldn't it be weird if the Mayans somehow predicted the Christian revelation? What would that have to say about religion?*
*pure speculation

I've heard once or twice that they predicted their own demise, but I can't find it anywhere. Can someone link me to it so that I can see? And no, a phrase like "Mayans predicted their own demise" doesn't count as proof for me, I want to see something with actual dates.
The 2012 thing is a scare thing. I can't guarantee that nothing will happen, but I will say the same for any other year. There are so many apocalyptic dates given that I tend not to believe any of them. It's best to just live out your life without worrying that the world might end at 1999. Or 1960's. Or 6/6/2006. Or 2000. Or any other date.
Even then it doesn't say that it will be an end of the world. It's just the end of their calendar. MAYBE something will happen, maybe not. My feeling is no. My guess is that if something happens, it'll be something like cool pictures of space in an astronomy article the following day.

I thought historians don't know when exactly or how the Mayan civilization collapsed? I could be wrong though. Maybe historians go by the date they predicted and then third parties were all "amazing!" when they were the same date. That'd be funny.
Granted, the Mayan empire collapsed under unknown circumstances, but the conquered Mayan people still exist and are a major ethic minority group in Central Mexico.
