Could I BE any more Chandler Bing from Friends (TM)?

Something that's been in my head for a while; are you one of those amateur game-makers who tries to take the world of indie games to the next level, or are you just in it for the fun (as in, can't be bothered making the BEST GAME POSSIBLE and just want to make whatever seems good and fun to you)?

I suppose I'm a mixture of both. While I admit I am not motivated enough to make utterly brilliant masterpieces, I sometimes think about how cool it'd be to have a game that, say, people make walkthroughs of...most of the time, though, I just get this really weird ideas (like using music aesthetic combined with a certain graphics style to make my game seem more atmospheric than, say, great gameplay).

I'm not that serious really. I'm just having fun with it, I mean, making maps is one of my favourite pass times now, I can't stop myself, I'm changing storylines just to fit in all these maps I've made xD. I'm making a game that appeals to myself, everything I look for in a game is what I'm putting in. I don't care much about the attention I get to be honest. Although not serious, I make sure I do my very best.

If I made a game and I got one review, good or bad, doesn't matter, it would make my day. I means someone was interested enough to take the time to play and review it. I couldn't ask for more. Seriously.
In it for the fun only. I mean, I try not to put out purposely shitty games with absolutely no effort put into them, but I don't treat rpgmaking as a career like some people do.

I like to think I'm casual about it, but I usually act pretty seriously. I make my games the way I like them and as best as I possibly can, but I also hope I can get other people to play/enjoy them, and tell me what they thought of it. It's been tough, though...somehow, RTP Pokemon fangames just don't appeal to mainstream indie developers.

Someday, I hope to take my RPGs to the next level and make something that really astounds everybody, but for now, RM2K is as good an outlet as I care to get.
I just want to make whatever seems good and fun to me. For me this is just a hobby, but I have to admit that I get super-excited when people praise me for my games.

To answer the OP's question...

Yes.

Yes, I am extremely serious in my approach to game making because I have always aspired to (and have in fact attended four years of college in order to) be a creative professional in life. Hence, this isn't JUST a hobby for me, but an extension of my craft.

In a feat of almost Shakespearian hubris, I do in fact want to make it "to the top" of the indie community. I don't mean I want to own my own or run my own site like WIP, I just want to make a game that is constantly talked about (in a good way) like The Way, A Blurred Line, Sunset Over Imdahl, etcetera. Of course, I have been "near the top before" and uh, let's just say it makes you a pretty big target and there is a long way to fall. I think at the point you make it there, you immediately need to STOP GIVING A SHIT about being there. I mean it's not like Lys hangs around forums going yesss post about me yesssss hypppppeeeee especially after all these years. But nonetheless I am motivated by fame/attention/what have you.

That said, not all of my games are completely serious, and while they tend to be very dark and disturbing and sometimes, I'm told, emo, they all have hillarious little easter eggs and references and jokes scattered throughout.

I am very much like you, down to atmosphere over gameplay. I try my best to make my games good, and while making them I try to be pretty serious about it, but it is not like my main goal in life to finish a game, so in my overall list of priorities it is not very high. But I enjoy trying to make a good game!

So it is something I do for serious fun?
Some days I would much rather work on my game then go to school or work, but priorities are priorities.

I am a relatively relaxed form of serious, I suppose. =)
I would love to be completely serious about my game creation, but I feel like I don't know enough to be. If I tried to be serious now, I feel as if I'd be more pompous than anything else. What with my kids, this is more of a hobby for me.

I write a lot, I always have. Sometimes I have difficulty getting readership, and there are times when I would like what I write to be interactive somehow - which is why RPG Maker appealed to me in the first place.

What with my plans for a Dragon Quest Slimes fangame in the mix, which would be like an interactive fanfiction but takes more of a brain to create - and to complete my four chapter "Odysessy" series, I feel as if it's more self expression than something to make money with. I am satisfyed with that. I wouldn't have been when I was younger, but I don't need to make tons of money or anything like that. I just like telling my stories in a way that people can enjoy.

Now my children's books, they are different. xD
I try to do things that are different.
I know we won't amount to anything serious using RPG Maker, but I do take some seriousness in what I do. Not in terms of making it to the top like some people, but the quality of my work (just like anything in life) is something I take seriously.
It is also just for fun, and it's something to do to pass time!

Yeah, I'm serious in that I usually try to put my best foot forward but I'm not serious in the CAREER type of thing.
I just try to be better than everybody else. (Which sometimes I find to be really not that hard. :-X)
I'm just in it for the fun and learning more about game making.

I fully intend to take game making to the next level and beyond. I actually have plans laid out to take my username and turn it into a company. Nothing big and industrial like EA, I would much rather remain small-ish and focus on quality rather than quantity.

I'll work for your company Chaos if you'll pay me.

So please let me know when you get some investors and shit.

Don't worry Max, I have plenty of pretzels to go around.

Anyone with talent for game creation gets a paying job, as soon as I'm capable of employing people. Which won't be for a few years anyway. HS and perhaps college first.

oh man, you're in high school! lololol! seriously, that explains a lot.
No, I'm not serious. 'Serious' implies that I've actually been productive, which I most definitely haven't been.

I'd like to be serious, though. I'm nothing without some kind of creative outlet. I'm mostly a prose writer, but I tend to have plenty of ideas which are better suited towards visual mediums. I'm also interested in game design, and because our medium is so young, there's A LOT to experiment with. I like to do that experimenting, and although I usually keep these self-indulgent thoughts to myself, I like the idea of having an indie team that's famous for creating unique RPGs. Don't tell anyone!
