Came here to learn about character development... but stayed to make friends, download games, and share my own.

... I still need to learn character development.

RMN: Where you make friends and play games but never find what you're looking for.
I came here because people here tend to accept games with visuals that aren't inspired by anime tend to be a bit more well received than other RPGMaker based sites. I remember setting up a page for Flatwoods on a number of other sites and there was a lot of "im sick of these sorts of games and these sorts of visuals comments" but here (which would be fine if it was critique but it came across largely more like it was whining), I had nothing but positivity here with good reviews pointing out my works flaws.

This place seems to have a better community.

Characters act according to their moral compass. If they need to learn a lesson, teach it to them, and have them struggle to understand it. After several failures, and a pivotal success, you've got yourself some character development.

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

I'm more of the Robert McKee school: You develop a character by forcing them to make difficult choices.

I feel at home here knowing my game doesn't necessarily have to star an anime girl with a knife and bloodsplatters.

No offense to people who like that aesthetic. But RMN definitely has the most genre balance of any RM community I've seen, whereas others can be really polarizing.

It's really sad that art style and genre are synonymous to many people.
Right. I am certain I've confused those terms more than once.

I have always liked this community because people are allowed to be informal and irreverent, but there's a distinct lack of perverts or assholes as there are on many, many, many other internet sites. I only have to think back to when I was a kid on the Gaia online forums to relive the horror of a craphole with no respect or concern for decency/younger users. (cue Mrs. Lovejoy memes)

Not that it's perfect; there have been people who have left for legitimate reasons, ugly arguments and occasional creeps and jerks - but I don't feel it's really hostile or alienating here. (There's a compliment in there somewhere?)

I also just really like the site's web design.

check up on games I've been following, if there are any notices at least. download some unknown games occasionally. idk the priorities change from time to time.

The screenshot thread "looks good" meme is timeless.
RMN hosts a lot of free games! But most of all, you can interact with the developers through game pages and reviews. No AAA company or indie developer listen to players as much as RMN developers do. And you can discuss ideas and concepts in the design forums.
I recommend this site to people that're burnt out on the modern gaming industry and miss the days where there was a real passion behind game development.

Too, I'm not as active as I want to be because all I can offer is observation and a keen eye for detail because I'm not privy to how any of the RPGmaker kits work, mechanically.

Still. One major factor that brings me back is seeing the community interaction and seeing you lot put forth more and more challenges on yourselves to make your games better, and that constant drive to improve your craft/hobby is enough to keep me here. I just wish I wasn't such a shy git or I'd talk more.

But yeah. That's what RMN is to me - passion and heart for game creation and seeing you lot strive to do better and being a quirky rag-tag site full of personality.

jk. I don't post a lot but I always enjoy keeping up with the forum games or art challenges that go on around here

I like old school, 2D video games and RPG Maker in general. My first RPG Maker was on the PlayStation 1. Didn't have any internet back the and couldn't imagine anyone else in the world using it. It's cool to see a community doing it.

Bro, I'ma give you some advice to get you on the Get Validation Quick path:

Fanwork. Especially shippy fanwork.

Do that, put it up on tumblr or something, tag it well, and you're set for life. Or at least for the duration of the fandom.
