REMAKES GALORE!

To be honest, I'm not sure which companies' practices I hate more. Konami with Castelvania or Capcom with Mega Man.
I'm kind of constitutionally opposed to the idea of remakes. I agree with Red_Nova, the games which are really worth remaking are the ones which weren't that good the first time around, which could be revamped to better exploit the potential of some their ideas which weren't implemented properly the first time around. But, since these games generally weren't successful to begin with, game companies don't have much incentive to remake them, because their names don't lend any selling power. They'd be better off saying "hey, remember that game we made years back which was a flop? I think it had some interesting ideas we could salvage for a new project."

But if a developer's idea of how to make a successful game relies on repackaging their own work from years ago, I tend to doubt their ability to actually improve on the original work.

Let's be honest. Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger were nearly perfect games. Of course, there are things that could be improved, as with any game, but I think a remake could only do each of them a disservice. So, here are my picks:

  • Final Fantasy I
  • Dragon Warrior (Quest) I
  • The Legend of Zelda (original)
  • Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
  • Metal Gear

Poor Xenogears. That game was so great up until Disk 2. It could probably use some re-make love to fix that. However, I'm fairly aware that the possibility of that actually happening are pretty much nil.

Arguably, the finale of the Corak and Sheltem story-line of Might and Magic 5 has been one of my personal top moments in gaming, even if it culminates in an FMV for the final boss fight. I suppose the combined World of Xeen would be awesome, but, even if they just re-do 5, I'd be happy. Of course, I've a funny feeling Ubisoft will ignore the main series, and just keep churning the Heroes sub-series to death. Though, I suppose one could argue that Heroes is the main series, now.

Oh, right! Xenogears! Yeah! I'm not so sure about remake, but it definitely needs to be properly finished. Speaking of which...

Why make it a contest? We can hate them all equally!

ETA: Also Sega with Sonic the Hedgehog
Well, the FFVII remake doesn't inspire much interest in me, as I've never wanted a remake. I'm pretty cynical about remakes in general (at least ones like this that have so much money and expectation attached to them). Square Enix still publishes cool games (like Nier), but some of the latest FF stuff has felt a bit soulless.

Though I would want an updated version of the original three Spyro games, for the ps4 or whatever. They just seem like perfect games for those value/retro bundles.
I really agree with Marrend on the Legend Of Zelda remake. Recently, I just finished Breath of the Wild and I'm pining to see a remake of the original or a Link to the past with that kind of scale. Of course, I'm not certain that the map has to be THAT big, but something in that area.

But you know one game that I would love to see get a remake of? The Legend of Zelda:Link's awakening. I can imagine a cell-shaded Zelda game reminiscent of Wind Waker HD. Marin actually got released as a playable character in Hyrule Warriors. I'm just hoping the game gets a remake in my lifetime. Another would be the oracle series, but they would be mixed into one big game instead of 2 separate ones.

You guys know how Crash Nsane trilogy has been getting all this hype? It got me thinking, why not do the same thing for Spyro the Dragon or the original 2 Sonic Adventure games? I also doubt Nintendo would ever do it, but why not remake one of the original Earthbound games in honor of Iwata?

Man, there are just so many ideas out there for remakes its overwhelming. Not that these are happening or anything, but we can all dream right?

Link to the Past is perfect and remaking it would inevitably be like that horrible Ecce Homo restoration.

This is apparently the thread best designed to promote hot takes from me.
I'd love a Link's Awakening remake, or even the Oracle games. I hated the controls for the GB Zelda games and the constant menu work to change the item on the A/B buttons. Just take LADX and add support for more buttons and it's good to go!

I totally forgot about a link between worlds. That basically is a LTTP remake in a sense. The only one I'm wanting right now is Link's Awakening. Though, I got very close to beating the oracles, but the battery packs in the cartridges broke so it erased my saves. Good thing there are digital copies nowadays.

I don't really like remakes or remasters, unless it's just a rerelease for newer platforms. I prefer companies to invest their money and creative energy in making something new.

If I was forced to pick one, though, I'd go with the MSX Metal Gear games. Like most pre-PS2 era games, they really haven't aged well, and Fox Engine would give them a great springboard for updated gameplay.
Xenogears is kind of my favorite game, although a lot of that is for sentimental reasons, and if there's any sort of situation where I'd agree it would make sense to have a remake, it would be one like that, where the game was already pretty well received, but was notably hampered in its original development by funding or time issues or the like. But the driving figures behind Xenogears don't have the rights to it, and I'm not sure there are any cases where all the circumstances to make a remake I could get behind actually line up, given how often key team members come and go from companies and property rights pass from the hands of the people who were personally involved with the games.

That said, one thing I do think is really underexplored is reusing resources from existing commercial games for new games. More than just using the same engines for multiple games, I think there's a lot to be said for recycling substantial amounts of work between games which are built on the same continuity. Almost all the work that went into Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army was recycled back into its sequel, Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon, and the result was that the sequel was a much more expansive and polished game which I felt improved considerably on the first. Considering they were made so long apart for completely different hardware, I'm not sure whether A Link Between Worlds actually reuses resources from A Link To The Past, since it was probably more practical to remake it from the ground up based on the original model, but that's also a good example of how you can use familiar material as building blocks for a new game.

* Most companies reaction to that statement:

I would also like more companies to make something fresh, innovative and new as well too, but we all know that’s not gonna happen when there’s certain financial uncertainly involved with that and that too many individuals at the top want something done for quick and cheap and to be released as fast as humanly possible, so, yeah…”hope you like your remakes!” :D

To be fair, I actually don’t mind the Secret Of Mana remake. It’s been over twenty years or so since the original game was released, and it may be time for a fresh coat of paint for it for a new generation of gamers. I actually like the new look the more that I look at it, and the voice acting isn't too bad from what I've heard thus far. I'll be willing to give this a chance when it comes out if I can.

Whaddya talkin' about there, Red_Nova? It's already a masterpiece! You can't just simply remake a masterpiece.

Actually, what might be interesting with a Secret of Mana remake, but I doubt they're going to do, would be to implement the story material which was intended to make it into the original game, but had to be cut due to cartridge size limitations. From what I've read, Emperor Vandole was originally intended to be a more significant character, and the conflict between the Empire and the Resistance was meant to be more drawn out, but that was all cut because they were running up against the memory limits of the format.

I'm sure there'll be material in the remake that wasn't in the original game, but it makes a big difference in my opinion whether it's done by people who were involved in the original, or at least were close enough to the project to know what the cut material consisted of.

I'm definitely not a fan of updating silent games to include voice acting though. First, players have already had the chance to come up with their own ideas of what the characters sound like which are likely to clash with the new voice acting. Second, I just feel like voice acting is so easy to screw up and so hard to get really right, my grand list of games which I feel were substantially improved by their voice acting is one entry long.

Agreed with both of these points.

FFXV was definitely the most "soulless" FF release...perhaps inevitably so after 10+ years and thousands of staff members.

In contrast, FF7 was the perfect storm of a small-team feeling, mixed with a multi-million dollar budget. There was more "art" and sense of atmosphere just in the Midgar maps than in all of FF15's world.

I could be cynical, but I think it'll prove difficult to recapture that visceral attention-to-detail and character nuance that the developers infused into the original, even in spite of the PS1's limits.

...

Spyro could make for a cool remake - the Crash Bandicoot release that dropped last month was actually extremely faithful and enjoyable to play. XD
