COMPUTER TALK!

Yup, let's talk about computers. Considering everyone here (I should hope) has a computer, I'm kind of surprised nothing like this has come up yet. So, here is what I was thinking:

What kind of computer are you using now?
Hopefully you guys can be specific, I'm quite the tech junkie, and I like knowing EVERYTHING. So, if possible, try listing things like CPU, GPU, Motherboard, RAM, and the like. If you are Abley or Harmonic, I would really appreciate knowing your sound cards too :).

Do you plan on purchasing a new system soon? If so, how much would you spend, and what would that computer look like (statistically)?
Basically, discuss computers you plan on purchasing soon, or in the near future. List what you can about them, and how much you would be willing to pay for it.

Anything else computer related!
Why not allow this topic to be fairly general as well. Anything you want to talk about computer wise, drop it off here! Maybe you want to discuss that new Intel I7 Extreme that is coming out. Whatever it may be, do not be afraid to post post post!
What kind of computer are you using now?
I am using a laptop from gateway. It really isn't much, and I am guessing my dad bought it because it was on sale. SPECS:

Intel Celeron processor running at 1.6 ghz.
ATI RADEON Xpress 200m Series video card (256m)
1 Gig of ram
NO IDEA of the motherboard, as I don't know gateway at all. Something by them I should imagine though.

Do you plan on purchasing a new system soon?
Do I plan on it? Yes. Soon? Not per say. I have chosen to wait until the next summer, since I make a lot more at my job during that time.

how much would you spend
I was thinking up to $2200 or so.

what would that computer look like (statistically)?
Well, what I have on NCIX looks something like this:

ASUS P5Q Pro motherboard
GeForce 280 GTX GPU card (1 gig)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.0 ghz)
2X Crucial Ballistix 4 gig ram chips
750W power supply
POSSIBLY a nice sound card with midi inputs
Some sort of crazy speaker system
All together in the Apevia X-Plorer case (LOOK THIS UP IT IS BEAUTIFUL!)
and a 22 inch HD LCD monitor

Anything else computer related!
Look up that Intel I7 extreme processor! It's a quad core, with each core clocked at 4 ghz, and each core has two threads! Seriously, INSANE. Too bad it comes in at $1200.

Also, just to let you know, here is my preferred computer building sit. Great prices, and it's a nice, easy to navigate site:

http://www.ncix.com
The Computer
Asus P5Q (P45 chipset) mobo
Intel C2D E8400 (I should overclock this since its a Wolfsdale but I'm too lazy)
4GB DDR800 RAM (OCZ I think, they have crazy rebates)
Visiontek ATI Radeon 4850
Antec Earthwatts 500W PS
640GB WD SATA HD
320GB WD SATA HD
250GB Maxtor SATA HD
Samsung SATA DVD Burner
Gigabyte WP-01 Wireless Adaptor
Antec Sonata 3 Case
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition
Samsung 19" Monitor that's old and could do with a replacement

Will You Replace Your Computer Soon?
Not a chance. The only thing it didn't eat up that I threw at it was a Vicky+Rev game that went on for 35 years longer than designed, and it only stuttered on higher speeds.

How Much Would You Spend?
Less than a grand. Any more and your return rate on hardware starts to drop off. I count the computer alone though, so after monitor/speakers/keyboard+mouse... well I haven't gone shopping for those for a while.

Neat Computer Things
SLI/Crossfire is only for people who are allergic to money. You get horrible return rates for the money you put into it and you pay a huge premium for it when you could just get a single card that's better than the SLI setup and is also cheaper. Find better ways to spend your money.

Get good power supplies. I'm not talking about 1000W SLI EDITION SUPER HYPE POWER FROM SPARKY, its a peice of shit that could blow your computer to smithereens and you won't even approach 1000W on normal computers. Get a power supply from a good producer (Seasonic, Corsair, Antec, PC Cooling) that has plenty of current on the 12V rails (fewer rails are better) and it will kick ass for a long time.

Only get Quad Cores if what you do actually uses up those cores. Most games won't use four cores, so if you get one to game on you pretty much got an expensive dual core that isn't as good as a C2D at equivelant cost.

You shouldn't spend $lots on a new computer. You can get a great midrange computer for ~$1000. If you want to be on the cutting edge you'll get farther with two $1000 computers four years apart than getting a $2000 computer for eight years.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S7404, 32-bit OS w/ a Intel Celeron M processor 530 (1.73gHz), 180g or so of memory, & 4g of RAM (I think). Mobile Intel 945 GM Express video card. That's about all I know about it. =(

I plan on getting a gamercomp sometime, I'll spend maybe $1500-2000 on one, maybe =/

On a similar note, do you know if teh processor on this comp can be replaced? >_<
I have a 3 year old laptop (I have no idea what the specs are) and I'm thinking of buying a new Mac Book.

Thoughts? I don't know much about computers.
I have a monstrous IBM desktop PC I bought used from Facebook Marketplace for $100. Its a P4 something-or-other with a 40GB HD (+ 200GB external HD I already owned) with a crappy onboard soundcard and 1GB of RAM (I think). I put in an ATI 9600 video card I had lying around. It has a CD drive (yes, just a CD drive). I bought an external DVD-burner on Boxing day last year for it.

My plan was to buy a new kickass PC and use this one as an emulation box for my TV downstairs, but I haven't had the spare cash. I've been using this beast of a machine for about a year now. I gave my old PC to my sister-in-law for school.

I'd spend less than $1200 for a new PC, preferably less than $1000. Come to think of it, I don't play new games so I don't really need a new PC.

Sounds like its a notebook, and the only things you can replace on them is the RAM, hard drive, and possibly the LCD panel. The rest of the hardware is packed together so that it fits in the case and there's no way to change it.

I don't know about MacBooks but there isn't much reason to upgrade unless you don't like your current setup. Buying a new computer when your current one does everything you need is rather pointless, and if its a notebook I assume you aren't playing any fancy/recent games on it.
My bad, thanks for enlightening me. I've never taken a notebook apart before so I was acting on second hand info.

Dang - I gotta buy a new comp then >_< I really didn't want to, but the CPU barely handles my favorite MMO
I just got a job tho, so that's teh first thing I'm saving for =D
...You just missed the post above yours completely...

Also, I really wish I could use this laptop of mine for emulation on my tv, but unfortunately, it has no SVideo or anything of that sort.

Also, don't bother buying a macbook unless you really like the mac os, or for whatever reason, want a laptop with high end gaming specs. Honestly, you can get a desktop with much better specs for half of the price.
oh you're right, I'm sorry >_<

I'll look into that - anything bigger than my current processor would be great lol
I might just get a desktop tho - you're right, better specs for less price usually.
I was just disappointed as I was looking at my current computer build on NCIX.

Turns out that my 4 gig ram chips are actually a 4 gig ram "kit". It is actually a pack of 2x2 gig ram chips.

Oh well I suppose.
There really isn't an issue if you got 4 gigs spread across one or two sticks. You got 4 slots to work with so you've still got expansion room, 4 gigs is plenty for current computers, I doubt you'd ever need more than 8 gigs for that computer's lifetime, and the new Intel processor only supports DDR3 RAM so you can't take your current RAM and put it in a new computer with that processor.

Having two 2GB sticks isn't bad.
