MOMEKA'S PIXEL ART
Posts
Here's a bunch of stuff. Mostly from old unfinished/scrapped projects.
In this game you played as kid who got sucked into a hell dimension through his closet. You had to fight some mage to get back home.
A random skeleton + the player:
Player getting sucked into a portal:
Skeleton merchant:
Alchemist skeleton:
Smoking skeleton:
Skeleton mages:
Imps:
Potion golems:
Avenging spirit:
Lesser doppelganger:
Bomb ghouls. These guys were suppose to walk around on stilts in a river of blood. If you got to close they would throw bombs at you.
A boss:
In this game you played as a creature walking around in a gas mask. You had crash landed on a planet and had to fight phantoms of your old crew members to unlock new skills.

Amazing, as I had suspected.
I really like the demon guy in the blue Jean long jacket. That set is actually overall among my favorites. I imagine a modern Dante's Inferno where Virgil is a demon and guides Dante through a dystopian hell. Very cool!

I like the "player sucked into a portal" and the "NERD!" one lol.
By the way, were these all unreleased to others? I thought I saw something like the Skeleton Merchant in one of the IGMC games.

Yeah, me too. Been wanting to make a game with them since I drew the first character. But been having a real hard time making tilesets that matches the style.

I've posted most of these gifs on other places. I guess someone could have disassembled it and made a charset from it. You remember what game it was?

You should finish more games.
But it's so hard!
Fantastic art Momeka. Puts my stuff to shame, but at the same time is quite inspiring!
I think you could definitely profit off of your talent.

Nevermind, I checked it myself and it's completely different. I just feel like I've seen the backpack and lantern before, but maybe it was from your own posts or something.

Are you solo? Team up with someone so you can focus on graphics.

Usually I team up with someone to do music/sounds. But otherwise I'm solo. And nah, I wouldn't want to give up design and programming, I love doing that.
I'm trying to stick to somewhat shorter projects these days. Hopefully that will get me to finish more games.
I love your artwork and style. Your graphics are very creative and are inspiring for me to work on my own project(s.)
I also enjoyed both the Betwixt demo and Grimps. I look forward to seeing any future works you might create.

Not sure who you've been teaming up with but it doesn't have to be that way. But do whatever!
I used to dabble a bit in gameboy programming for fun. Here's some of those stuff:
Espionage
This was the the first game I finished. It's really simplistic
You moved between screens and collecting floppy disk and then you had to make your way back to an exit before the timer ran out. And you got a scored based on how many floppy disk you collected. Not really that great of a game, but it was a good learning experience.
Run to Databay
My second and last "finished" gameboy game. Had bigger plans for this, was gonna have a boss and ending and stuff. But it was made for a jam and in the end all I had time to do was basically dodge rocks with your speeder.
Pretty happy with the title screen though. Made the effect by changing the background color palette while it's drawing to the screen.
Scavenger
Unfinished platform game.
Just testing the tileset.
Early movement test
Implemented character animations
Random stuff
Don't have any gifs of this. But was basically just trying to do pixel movement and collision. In the end I think I kinda failed to get it as good as I wanted.
Early experiments with fading the screen and animated tiles.
Some unfinished puzzle game. The "spirit" character moved opposite to you and you would have to guide it to certain tiles.
Some experiments with messing with color palette/offsetting the background while it's drawing the screen.
Random collection of sprites from various projects.
Monsters from some jrpg game idea thing
Unused title screens
I got more stuff, but they don't seem to be on this computer. I'll see if I can dig them up later.

This is super cool!
I love how you went from creating simple finished games to more demanding stuff and focused more on visuals and fiddly things. I think its quite usual problem among hobbyists.

Yeah, it feels like a pretty natural progression, as you improve you want to make things at the best of your ability. But it usually is also a lot more work.
Most of the gameboy projects failed on the programming side. Was working in an unfinished C library called GBDK that was riddles with bugs. No way to debug stuff except trial and error. It had a bunch of weird quirks that you had to work around. So most games died when I ran into game breaking bugs I couldn't solve.
But it was really fun making games around the gameboys limitation and it was pretty awesome testing the games on a real gameboy.
I can recommend GBDK for anyone that wants to try to do something small on the gameboy, just see how it is to work with. But if you really want to make some serious stuff in it you're way better off learning assembly.
