I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

CloseYeah, splitting up anything with slashes in it makes a lot of sense. Best dungeon design, best side-scrolling level design, best puzzle design. Best protagonist, best supporting cast.
"Sleeper Hit of the Year" is a dumb category because by being nominated it is automatically no longer a sleeper hit. I suggest replacing this with "Best First Game," for a developer's first game ever, which I think might be a category we've had before in the past.
"Best Old-School Game" is a dumb category because 100% of the games on this website are old-school games. "Most Convincing 8-Bit Style Graphics" and "Most Unapologetic Use of Obnoxious, Obsolete Retro RPG Gameplay Mechanics" would be a fun way to split this up.

Here are the categories I actually think we should get rid of, because getting rid of them will solve BOTH problems. It will make the list more interesting and quirky and fun, and also simultaneously prevent one game from sweeping the major categories. Can't sweep the major categories if there fuckin' aren't any, bitches!

1. Best graphics -The easiest to define category. Eye candy is important.
I dont know if this should be Best Graphics or Best Art Direction, or maybe Art Direction should be its own category.
I dont think a game with visuals like Space Funeral would ever with anything for best graphics but best art direction? Its all about whats most cohesive visually. To me anyway.

Yeah, probably more of a visuality award. I think that my list counted with games like Space Funeral being nominated in trippies game categore, which is usually associated with visaulity too.

Most cohesive visuals perhaps. I see a lot of games on here with great sprites OR great character portraits but rarely are they cohesive or work well together visually.
I dont mind the idea of a best "Game Trailer" category either.
I'm in the slim down camp, I'd much prefer more games competing for fewer awards than 25 awards with a choice from 2. There should also be more of an effort to make the nomination process visible, especially from the front page.
The smaller things like Sleeper Hit and Best Villain would be much better served with round up articles every 6 months or so.

Game Trailer would be hard to nominate because the author of the game might not have made the game trailer. And how would you build the system to know if there is a game trailer since it would be inside the media?
Best Non-RPG (we had a category for that once. It was mainly for puzzle games.) But there are quite a few VN on here now too (And maybe more now with VNM out.)
I don't know if we need a best RPG, since that's usually the game of the year anyways.
Best first game, sounds interesting. Might be willing to see where that one goes.

Best Game Page is an amazing idea and it will be the worst event of 2018 if it does not get included in the final list. THE WORST EVENT.
If we got rid of Game of the Year, I wouldn't actually mind it too much. I like the idea of expanding the slashed-together stuff, too.
I think more are better, if only because it stops the whole sweep issue that people think is a thing (only one game in the past has came close to sweeping, fyi, and that was when there were 13 categories for that year. It got 11.)
Besides, sometimes when you nominate it's like "Okay, I really liked this game and want to nominate it for something... but gdi, I already have this really good game already nommed for this category, and I can't get rid of this game for this category since it's a perfect fit. Well fuck."
It's really about getting people to play or at least experience the games (watching someone LP totally counts!)

GotY is the Gold Medal for a lot of folks out there.
Even if it isn't in the whimsical spirit of the Misaos, I still think it's a disservice to the RM community to remove it.
