MISAOS CATEGORIES 2018 (NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN)

Otherwise I really like the K-man's categories, despite the lack of some of the great ideas that Libby had.

Her ideas were great but vague. I didn't know what to do with them specifically.

Best Visual Design Vs . Eye Candy = awarding 1 game with 2 awards for the general audience here.

Yeah, I can see how this sounds good in theory but this would be the result in practice. I will combine them.

I wanted to stay away from specific genres and engine restricted awards, due to the fact I don't have anything coded to enforce it and I don't anticipate being able to do it any time soon. Maybe in 2019.

I like the idea being Punniest, but would probably generalize it into "funniest game".

But... but... puns are a specific kind of goody goodness, such as aptly named skills and items, which could still be used in a non-comedy game.
One category that's popped up in my head Most Notable Translation. Basically an existing game that's been recently translated. Problem with this award is I don't know how often a game gets translated usually. I just remember games like Desert Nightmare and Seraphic Blue being pretty cool since they weren't released in the given year but is the first time they've became playable to english speakers.

https://rpgmaker.net/games/9513/ this game was translated last year.

Only thing that would get complex is if a game is getting a simultaneous translation. For example a german speaker releases their game in their native language and english. It would put emphasis on the foreign aspect of the game instead of it being translated really. Thoughts?

I like this idea, It'd be kind of like the "best foreign film" catergory. But the idea is that it'd give people a chance to check out games outside of the community, like Helen's Mysterious Dungeon or one of vgperson's most recently translated games - some of them show up here quite a bit, but also become available on steam.

I feel like this would be better served with a separate, non-Misao recognition, given the unreliable supply of translated games. Maybe even something player-hosted. Like "Darken's Award for Translating Excellence" or something.
Okay, based on the recent discussion, draft 2 is up

This would honestly give me SO much motivation to work on my game
I am surprised no one discussed SgtM's award idea:

The kentona Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence
A game you think needs more recognition for whatever spurious reason

I thought it was funny and random, but of course I would.

I mean that would be nice, but shouldn't it be an award for procrastination
that would make more sense, actually

I am a big fan of this one as well, TBH, but I'm a sucker for anything that encourages fun animal stuff. Obviously.

Most Likely To Give You a Brainwave
The game that inspires you the most to make games of your own.

If the goal is to prevent sweeps, I think this award is prime sweep bait. Vague enough to just mean "quality game" Idk about you guys but most games that got me into gamemake or inspire are generally the ones I like the most.

For me, I'm most inspired by flawed works, especially if they're paired with interesting ideas. Poor execution makes me want to go in and fix things.
SunflowerGames
The most beautiful user on RMN!

I think these categories will be a nice change for this year.
A lot of the games that inspire me the most are ones that I don't generally like the most. They've got good ideas but they're not done that well, so I feel like I should take them and make my own spin on the idea to 'do it right' or at least improve it in a way that I would enjoy.

Why bother making another version of a good game when you can take ideas from a bad game and make them work?
I'm with Darken on the Brainwave one. The games that inspired me the most, I've given 5 star reviews :| It's because I thought very highly of what they did, and they encouraged me to expand my skillset.
my beef with it is that it is very developer centric. it doesn't apply to your average player and will probably just be another 'here's a game I like' nomination.

As we are getting close to wrapping up the list, I would like to reiterate my suggestion that we keep nominations and/or thread discussion open all year, to encourage more engagement for games that don't come out near the end of the year.
I nominate Sooz to manage that discussion
