[RMMV] HOW TO MAKE SLOPES IN CAVES LOOK BETTER

Posts

Pages: 1
Hey guys, I've only just recently had enough free time to get back to work on a project of mine. I created a project and put some images up ready to upload the game. However I need to improve some of my mapping to make look a bit better.

I have no clue how to really solve this issue as there are almost no tutorials on things similar to this online. I am trying to create a slope type feel to this cave, not an actual slope mechanic just an aesthetic.

I should specify that these caves are not typical caves. For context these caves are kind of like 'bubbles' inside of these islands made from vines and roots. There is no soil or beach to these islands (magic plays a roll in this). Think of it like rocky cliffs inside a dome with shallow water below.

(I hope this image shows up).

You can see to the left of the screen there is a sloping path leading down. I was suggested to look at doing a better job at slopes or add stairs and I REALLY want to avoid stairs if I can. How do you make slopes look better?

Keep in mind the rock formation shouldn't look even.
I think your best bet would be to put in stairs or some other sort of tile that indicates a transferable level of height. I haven't seen a natural slope really pulled off in the engine, or with 2D tiles in general before.

Neither to be honest lol. I mean I could look at adding rope or something and having the player place the rope to climb down. Stairs just look strange in these caves (even though the theme of these caves are bizarre on their own).

It might be possible, but hard to do using tile mapping. If you make a cliff or something on either side, then place a tree or statue in front of the corner it might look like a slight incline. Otherwise, I would suggest parallax mapping. You making make the ground go up in a V shape and have shirt alongside the path. Also you can make the ground darker and lighter. This would require a tremendous amount of skill on your part though.

That's a really interesting solution. I'm no where near that good sadly so I'll settle with a ladder/rope. I'll keep that idea in mind though as that is interesting.

you've never seen slopes , visitors???? wat

here's how i'm doing them in my own game. i'm just using the natural edge tiles but hand-made a little divot that goes out on the bottom.

it's actually not perfect atm since as you can see i have a bit of rock jutting out in a rectangle but w/e. easy fix.
That looks awesome! I searched for a few hours and I actually couldn't find any good slopes what so ever.

The tile set I'm using doesn't actually come with edge tiles like that (I guess it auto puts it in?). Next time I build a cave with slopes I'll look into mashing a new tile set together to support it and see if I can pull off a similar effect. Thanks everyone!

Edit: I knew you edited it to make it fit better, I meant to say it doesn't come with the edge graphics as it seems to just auto apply it with this MV tile set. There are a few tile pages with edges like that in it however they are grass and sand textured so I'll need to find/create a stone one.

There's a few optical tricks you can use.
(1)Winding roads. Not all slopes are straight.
(2) Walls and gorges. The problem with the picture you have is that a real slope actually CUTS into a mountain, either by having rock walls or pits nearby.

Your sample picture doesn't really do that, it breaks apart too much.

(3) Slopes do not have grass growing on them in many cases, as people tend to put pressure on the area stripping it bare. You can represent this either by a path or just a gap in the grass.

You can tell this is a slope, right?

unfurl, open a new map. draw some autotiles around. play around with combining the shift key with left and right clicks. you're welcome.

edit: those slopes look pretty bad since they don't extend past the cliff face, bulma.
This is incorrect. I have looked at it with the grass off. It looks stupid, because it is stupid. Let me explain.

A legit PATH (like the one you showed above) is different as it is worn at the edges, but if you have grass, the slope breaks due to erosion ON the slope, not above it. It's because you're stepping on flat ground above the slope.

Let's review. That snow path forms because the snow slides down, forming a path. A dirt path forms when erosion causes grass to slide down. Only the very top (a 1/2 or 1/4 dirt-to-grass tile, not a whole one.) might there be potentially eroded. But I don't have that chipset set up like this.

See? It looks stupid. And no, this chipset doesn't have a grass path (if it did, I'd say use that instead). It's called Background, cuz it's mostly for Parallax Mapping.

In order for the path method to look good, it needs to look more like... (hold on) Nope, I tried widening the path, but in order for your eye to visually interpret it as a slope, it needs to be significantly longer (which would involve resizing the entire thing. And it still doesn't look as much like a slope as just cutting out the section that would erode.

That's a good way of implying a slope, it works well here, but its still very flat, the rocks on the outside get the point across though. Realistically that's about as good as it gets.
Well except for those weird blocks.
