PS1 CLASSIC, ANYONE?
Posts

Did you see the games list? There's literally only four or five games on the US/UK version I would play, and I have them all. The Japanese version gets all the good games. What the fuck, Sony? The Japanese version gets Parasite Eve but the US doesn't? Why isn't Einhander on here, or Final Fantasy Tactics?

If I'd seen the full list, I probably wouldn't have preorderd, but whatever. I don't know anyone who preferred the console versions of Rainbow Six to the PC, and GTA 1 was awful. GTA 2 was much, much better. The only reason I can think of they're on there is because of GTA 5 and Rainbow Six Vegas.
Seems a bit silly to preorder something not even knowing what's on it?
But it has Kurushi. I'd almost get it for that.
Looking at the Japan exclusive they don't seem that exciting. Surely not as exciting as Destuction fucking Derby! (and Oddworld, but I have that on steam)
Or even Twisted Metal, that's a classic right there. I can understand the unfortune of not having Parasite Eve, but who really cares about Parasite Eve?

Does no one have a psx? Or a PSP? Or a PS Vita? Or a PS3?
Most of the games you'd want on PS Classic is available for digital purchase AS a "PS Classic".
That's basically what I use my Vita for! (Symphony of the Night FTW!)

Yeah, pretty much. You know, the SNES Classic and the NES Classic are awesome! They chose great games for them, but the PS1 Classic really dropped the ball. Most of the games they chose for it are dated. With the exception of FFVII, Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Wild Arms, and Resident Evil: Directors Cut, there's a better example in each type of games. And really, Resident Evil 2 would have been the best choice for an RE game. Final Fantasy VII is iconic, and it's my favorite in the series, but if I'm really honest, Final Fantasy IX would have been the best choice. I played Tekken 3, but I got bored of it pretty quick. I'm not really big on fighting games, but I think there's probably a few better choices. It's not that these aren't great games. Some still are. Most were great games, emphasis on were. There were a dozen better choices than Cool Boarders 2 for snow boarding. I guess Oddworld and Rayman are fine, but I think choosing Crash Bandicoot instead of one of them would be a much better choice. I mean, most of these games: you might play them once, and that's about it. Again, Parasite Eve and Arc the Lad instead of a number of these other choices would have definitely been preferable.

yeah I feel like because of sony's better virtual console service there's really no need for a classic esp since ps1's strength was always its impressive library of games and there was a group of games for everyone. I loved that PSN got the entire megaman legends series just as the psClassic catalogue kinda stopped.
With the NES/SNES market I feel like most people who grew up with it don't own a Wii U or didn't bother getting a wii. and plopping a classic mario or zelda is enough to entice people to remember the entire system.
Well, I cancelled my preorder today and got a full refund after hearing that nine of the games are the wrong region, meaning that they don't exactly work properly on NTSC. I didn't really care about the games library, as most of my old PSX games are gone and the ones I still have aren't on the classic, but if I'm throwing $100 at something I expect it to fekking work! This makes me wonder what ELSE is wrong with it that hasn't been discovered yet.
They can't even get the NTSC games right... https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-playstation-classic-emulation-first-look

Exactly! They don't seem to give a damn.
Out of boredom I was poking around the PSClassic, and I came across a stunning revelation today - Shinan already posted that great article on how many games were originally planned for the system. A lot of them were cut because of licensing issues (Spyro/Crash trilogy rerelease from activision/universal)
...But combine those licensing issue, with the fact that you only have 15GB of storage on the system. and suddenly those selection of games become really really small. Jrpgs were huge on the playstation, but a lot of them had multiple discs, if you had more than one, you'd also be cutting into the number of games.
So the question becomes: knowing how much space is on this system; which 20-25 games would you include on the Playstation classic? (space permitting?)
Here's the original PAL/USA list.
And here's what I was able to include:
Ace Combat 2
Ape Escape
Crash Bandicoot 2
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy Tactics
Gran Turismo
IntelligentQube
JetMoto
Metal Gear Solid
Odd World: Abe's Odyssey
PaRappa the Rapper
Resident Evil Director's Cut
Silent Hill
SoulBlade/SoulEdge
Spyro the Dragon
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Syphon Filter
Tekken 3
Tomb Raider 2
Tony Hawk ProSkater 2
Twisted Metal 2
I tried to imagine what an "ideal" Playstation Classic would look like for the NA region, but my picks aren't the best and plus some of these don't work without a dualshock controller..(I'll probably swap out Crash 2 for Crash 1 and Ape Escape for Medal of Honor or something. I tried to squeeze in Armored Core and Warhawk, but there wasn't enough space.) But yeah, it's interesting to think about what this list of 20 games could've been, storage space and licensing issues aside.

also RIP the ps3 PSN (closes July 2nd) I bought all that I think I might be missing from the ps1 library. Yeah I know I'm buying roms that'll go into jim ryan's pockets but I have so much invested in my ps3 that all of my ps1 save files are on there from since 2009, plus the Vita made it a Switch experience long before that was a thing. Between emulator files getting shuffled and a scrappy disc on ebay, PS3 became a decent option for me. Shame there's zero scalability towards PS4 and up.

yeah, I'm bummed about the store closing. I'm writing down everything I need to still get, lol. It kind of sucks, I always thought, since most of these games are digital now, it would take up less space and be easier to preserve and maintain and possibly be around for as long as...well... here we are I guess, lol. It just feels weird, you know? Like, games have become a lot easier to purchase over the years, but I guess sales do have to inevitably end at some point too..But it just doesn't really make sense when venues like gog.com are around, where you can download something like Beneath a Steel Sky for free.
I can't stand this Jim Ryan guy, holy shit. Supposedly you can now play Xbox, Xbox360 games on your android phone. I would love to play something like Xenogears or Suikoden 2 on my phone.
What the fuck Jim.
Call me curious, but, I took a look at what game ISOs I have. The total amount is 18.5 GB, and consists of...
Breath of Fire 3
Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy Tactics
Front Mission 3
Legend of Legaia
Parasite Eve
Resident Evil 2
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
The Legend of Dragoon
Threads of Fate
Vagrant Story
Wild Arms 2
Xenogears
...a bunch of games. XD
If I were to take this list down to what LBR is talking about in regards to the PS1 Classic's game storage capacity, I'd probably only need to remove about 6 disks worth of games?

I'm still amazed they kept the terrible English translation of Revelations: Persona with the cut content instead of just re-translating the Japanese version. You'd think Atlus would have wanted to capitalize on the Persona 5 train that everybody was on at the time.
I would add more fighting games and racing games to the lineup, since those were some of the popular titles for the console. Guilty Gear, Soul Blade, Gran Turismo. Maybe throw another FPS or two in there and a horror game besides Resident Evil and some more RPGs.

It's basically a re-release of Final Fantasy VII with added mini games sold for $75 (originally, anyway)
