No matter what you think and no matter what you do, certain characters are in fact better than others. As long as you don't use it as an excuse to not improve your skills, it's fine. You can still win a match-up if you're just flat out better than your opponent, but don't fool yourself into believing your both playing on even footing.
Using a lower-tier character takes talent, but you're still handicapped against the better characters. That's all tiers are supposed to represent; "queers" are those idiots who use tiers as the end-all-be-all of gaming because they don't know the meaning of "risk=reward."

It ultimately just depends on the player, and I think that should be fairly clear. :X

Aero is right though, and some characters are certainly worse than others ... I mean, we all agree when I say that JigglyPuff is extremely weaker than all other brawlers right? Seriously, she gets blown of the stage at about 50% and her attacks are not really all that strong ... and the only way to land a successful "Rest" Attack, you gota be playing against big characters like Bowser and DK
Her jump makes up for it though... same for Kirby... The differences in "power" as far as Tiers are concerned are miniscule. The only places they make sense are with clones like Roy, Toon Link, Ganondorf, etc. And even then, I've always owned Marth with Roy, regardless of my opponent.

It so happens that all the characters I like best are in the top tiers... (SSB Kirby, SSBM Marth/Shiek (and I don't have Brawl...))
I think it's shitty that supposedly evenly matched players win with certain characters, however, I don't think any 'Tiers are for Queers' movement matters at all. This isn't a social construct; there is (hopefully?) organized and collected data that supports these lists, and if they turn out to be true, there's no disputing it.
However, choosing -because- of tiers? Screw that; use whoever you like best.
