An upgrade of the DS Lite. Not necessarily enough changes for me to call it the new DS, though it is said to not replace it, so like I said, its simply an upgrade. Here are the known upgrades:
- SD slot so you can store music, photos, and other downloadable content, which includes games.
- Cameras, yes, two of them. two 640x480 cameras, 3 Megapixels each. One is placed next to the mic, and the other looks rather cool imo, you'll see it as one of the images.
- NO MORE GBA GAMES (or gba slot compatability) I honesty don't know why they did this. How can I transfer my pokemon to Platinum!?
- Built in web browser which can be used through wi-fi I can assume.
- A bigger screen, a whopping .25 inches more.
- Apparently it'll be even thinner...really what message are they giving kids if they make being overly thin so important. (lol i know situations are dif...but still XD)
- A sleeker design? It seems the on/off switch is back to the button format placed at the random lower left corner of the DSi. Also the just flipped the on/sleep/charging etc lights to the left rather than it being on the right. Personally I think they just ran out of ideas there lol.
- I hear there will be more speakers, or it seems they made them bigger so the sound will be greatly amplified.
DSi Shop
The Nintendo DSi is able to connect to an online store similar to the Wii Shop Channel called the DSi Shop. Here, using Nintendo Points, users will be able to download DSiWare, games and applications that can be downloaded to the internal memory or the SDHC card of the user's DSi handheld. The Nintendo Points can be used on the Wii. The applications will either be free, or cost 200, 500, or 800+ (named with a 'Premium' Tag) Nintendo Points.
The DSi Shop was launched with the DSi Web Browser being made available to download. DSiWare games will be available in Japan from December 2008.

So what does everyone else think? They say it won't ship internationally until after 2009, and of course Japan will get it much sooner in November 1st.
The solution to a completely saturated market: Make a slightly modifie version of the product! Its even more expensive than the previous iteration and with a missing feature! Great work Nintendo!
There's also no mention if it has WPA support. Great work Nintendo.

So, it's more expensive, but it has no GBA slot? Ooookaaaaay...
I don't have a Gameboy, so I depend on my Lite for Gameboy Advance games. I agree with Toasters. I'm sticking with my DS Lite!

No GBA? That sucks. I don't own any handheld, but if I did, I'd get a DS Lite (despite the larger screen of the DSi!)
If enough of us don't buy the DSi, maybe Nintendo will listen... nah. I know all too well that Nintendo will sell millions of DSis, and make more money off a peripheral that can play GBA.

Sadly that's not the case. IIRC the GBA processor chip costs money so in order to keep the DSi within a certain price, Nintendo decided to ditch that in favour of the SD slot and more RAM. Without the GBA support I don't want to get a DSi but probably will in the end.

I can already tell the DSi will sell millions. Plus they basically stole the whole shop idea from the psp.
Actually I hate the DS Lite GBA slot because the game doesn't go in all the way and sticks out a little. I really hate that a lot. Instead of playing GBA games that I own on my DS, I play the pirated version on my PSP. So, I don't mind the missing GBA slot.
As for this product I think it is completely unecessary. Nobody asked for this product! However, I think it is healthy to think of it as an iterative improvement and not a replacement. I don't believe you are really expected to buy this to replace your DS Lite; rather, people buying their first DS get a better one. You don't buy a new computer every time Dell releases a new one do you?

The problem is that the DS market is pretty much at its saturation point. Everyone who wants one already does (at least in Japan, I don't remember if that extends into NA/EU) and the DS isn't printing money for Nintendo anymore. The solution is just to make a new iteration of the DS and hope it keeps the DS the most sold console/handheld for another year or two.

Actually it is. I don't have the numbers handy but the DS has sold over 500,000 units every month since the Lite came out. It is currently outselling 360 and PS3 combined, MULTIPLIED BY TWO (currently).
Holy shit, there goes my saturation argument. Its mindblowing that the DS is still selling like crack after two years.

am I the only one here who still has a fully funtional DS Phat?
Still jusing my first gen DS too...
Just ordered an R4 for it as well :)
Not available in Europe yet, but even if it was, I won't buy it. The most negative point: No GBA Slot. Then, why would I need to upgrade to a new version? I mean, the classic DS has 90% of shitty games. So if I upgrade to the DSi, I'll pay more. But I pay more to lost the GBA slot, and still play shitty games. I prefer to buy a classic DS. Then, I was told that the GBA slot was deleted to avoid piracy (Linkers use this slot). But, there is a SD slot. More easy to play the games illegaly downloaded with a SD Card! To play pirated games with a liker, I have to buy it first. Expensive. It's easier for me to just put my SD Card in my PC. So, I really can't understand this point of the DSi. Maybe it is protected against pirated games... Don't know.

haha i still have one that i don't use at all.
I also have a DS phat. Blue one.
As for the DSi, I had considered getting one. BUT I seriously doubt Nintendo's ability to do anything right with hardware so I am just going to pass.

I traded my DS Phat for a DS lite and the fact I can fit the lite in my pocket when I could not fit my Phat in my pocket makes the lite so much better.
From what I can tell, it might be harder to fit the DSi in my pocket, so it would boil down to DSware being significantly better enough than the GBA games I can play on my DS lite to override the pocket factor and make me get one.
