I would like to point out that even though Final Fantasy: Tactics does not use this technique even once, on my first play through I thought that fully 1/4 of the battles in it were like this, because that game is fucking HARD, at least on the first play through.
...It was hard?
I find it extremely easyFFT has a ridiculous difficulty curve near the beginning
Will you believe me that I got a summoner, ninja, and a samurai at chapter one without even cheating? :)
Spamming accumulate over and over in mandalia plains? :P
Well, that's if you sit around doing five million random battles.
It's only hard if you play it normally(until Orlandu), but is of course easy to abuse.

Of course!! (oh, and sweegy woods, too) Your first REAL fight is in Dorter Trade City, Chapter 1. You have to be prepared. I refuse to go into that fight without being able to at least summon Golem to block all the physical attacks. The two guests, Delita and Algus, BOTH of them do nothing useful! GAHH.
I made some things incredibly easy, like in chapter 2 when Gafgarion was gonna turn on me - right before I yanked his equipment and made him a CHEMIST. Because I'm evil like that. I hated the bastard!
On topic:
I'm never sure if I am supposed to lose or if I'm just underleveled sometimes. xD
FFT is easy, only trouble I had on first playtrhough was result of my stupidity in sending my best guys in missions on the north and going south with a team of rookies, just to find myself damn trapped in the south of the map having the Lionel castle gate battle with just Ranza and some new characters. That was bitchy. Everything before and after: easy win.
Suzu: Summoner in Dorter? could have used but I get bored with long cast times in FFT, so I have an all monk party time there, earth slash desintegrates the first 3 guys who are kind enough to line up for the kill =D
As for the topic: I don´t like situations where you either loose or win but you loose in the cutscene, even if you get something good extra if you win, because I suck at finding secrets and optional stuff, so I like a set route to follow on those things, unless it is really OBVIOUS then it is fine.
Now, best ones for me are:
-Being desintegrated too early ( Zio in Phantasy Star IV is cool example, Lavos in CT as well). I never start using itens in the first 3 turns of a battle.
-Having a defined challege anyway, if you loose, game over, so you either gotta kick some of the boss hp or survive for x turns.
-cuscenes, they are great too, as long as you have the resources.
Also, there is no problem in always winning storywise, usually in confront situations, loosing means being destroyed unless you are either saved by someone or made prisoner, but I think it wouldn´t be too nice for a viking RPG for example :P

I'm currently trying to finish Golden Sun and it has these moments. I usually just look up whether or not you're meant to die or not. Of course in RPG Maker games that's not possible unless a boss walkthrough exists.
For your own game design keep in mind that it is always fair to clearly establish rules for your player. If the player is going to lose the battle for narrative reasons, then the rules of the game have changed - the rules normally dictate that you should try to win. If you change the rules of the game, you should probably fill the player in.

Yeah well that is SOFT I have never done that super-early fight with anything but squires, chemists, and the occasional wizard/priest.
The fact you're going int here with summoners prepared to cast GOLEM indicates you definitely power level 100000000 times the amount I do.

Okay, fine, but I'm saying you have yet to present a way that the good guys actually lose something. How would you implement it? (or should they always win at everything forever, like Power Thirst?)
Stop saying I want them to "win everything forever". I just want the possibility of winning to exist in every fight, and for it to mean something. The player shouldn't have to conform to some set storyline just "because." If he has to power to win a fight, allow him the chance to win the fight, and don't shit on him when he does.

I've done similar, but that doesn't mean the beginning isn't hard. It just means you knew what to do to make it easier before having it hammered into your brain by the A.I.
I just avoid super-expendables. Problem solved (since 1873 is a web-type game, losing certain battles will impact your storyline but not the ultamite ending.)

I hate power leveling, actually. Asa's the one that spends forever doing the level up/level down trick he invented. *headdesk* ON A WHOLE TEAM OF CHARACTERS.
Hey, Golem is only 500 JP... well, I remember it being cheap on the list. If I said that I wanted Bahumut, then I would be going a bit over the top. My brother just made a team of ninjas to take on that fight, but I'm always more magical oriented, so I usually go with a summoner. Charge times are boring, but that's why I have someone like a samurai later in the game with summoning powers to back her up.
I got fft on my first time, I think it's easy for me to understand for some reason. I only used golem halfway I just spam double attack on people because I love speed and ninjas @_@
And because of that I killed velius in like 3 minutes or less...
And yes I hammered myself in mandalia plains and keep hitting my fellow team members
Also power leveling is annoying :U

Both Suzu and Ness are kinda different from me... only ninja stuff I get is two swords... to use on monks for double killing punches powered by accumulate :D Or all that used by knights or lancers using two hands too. I am all out for strong attacks in FFT at least.
In most other games I am all for range, as long as cast times aren´t too bad, the best would be a mage knight class.
On topic: Yes, I don´t have super itens either, every expendable can be bought on shops/got from enemies.

Somehow, I'm reminded of boss fights against a supposedly super-powerful badass in which you somehow mop the floor with him.
Afterwards, your party is breathing heavily and the boss seems barely scratched aside froma cut or two on his cheek. Never mind the fact that you are actually more powerful than him now-- the game doesn't recognize that.

You just described 90% of that Dragon Ball Z Budo-whatever for the Wii. You had to win nearly every fight but since its DBZ and you weren't playing as Goku/whoever you always 'lost' (although losing the match meant you had to redo the fight).
Ahh good ol' DBZ...I never knew why they didn't just shoot anyone or finger-jab their eyeballs. ???
The battles where you have the freedom to use your special items are ok for me as long as the next battle is such that you wouldn't need them anyhow. Like a spring that heals you or gives you a bonus ability, or a new ally that comes out from the shadows to help you defeat the final boss. Maybe have the tough parts of the boss in the first battle, which you destroyed, and then the lesser weakling after.
At the end of Wolfenstein 3D
you fought Hitler in a robotic suit, and then just plain Hitler with a dinky pistol.
And at the end of Quake 2
