ARE SEQUELS OR REMAKES ALLOWED?

Like the subject says, are sequels or remakes to already established RPG Maker games allowed to be submitted? I just joined. I'm interested in trying to revive the infamous game "Sonic and the Chaos Dragons". I won't try to profit from someone else's work, especially since Sonic the Hedgehog is the central focus. This is just a fun exercise to get to know my engine, RPG Maker MV.
I would say one of the requirements is simply to get permission from the original developers. They'll probably want to be informed about what you're going to do with the story.

If the original devs can't be reached, I would say no.

If you were talking about a fan-game of Sonic the Hedgehog, and not an indie/hobbyist title, you'll probably be fine this site. However, since you are talking about an indie/hobbyist title, I'd be inclined to say you should have the permission of the original author. I have no idea how one would be able to provide evidence of such permission, though.

Aside from that, color me curious. Why chose that game, in particular to make a sequel/remake of when there are...let's just say there are arguably better games out there?

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

I am in no way passing judgment about this but it is very weird and funny that it's considered OK to use someone's property without permission if they're SEGA but if they're an indie you need to ask permission or it's bad.

No real reason lol. Just played the game was I was younger and find it funny now.
Stealing from faceless corporations is a victimless crime!
The difference is that most people can hazard where something like rips from Chrono Trigger or music from FF7 come from. They're well-known and 'a brand' in and of themselves.

Using stuff from smaller, lesser-known fellow indies is more likely to result in people assuming you made that. There's been cases in the past where people would use others' work and get praise for it and acknowledged as the creator of it over the proper creator instead.

They're both pretty sketchy, but one affects a multi-million dollar company that has already made a lot of cash from that stuff and people know belong to them, and the other, some random schleb who is making cool stuff that very few people know is theirs and have to worry about being thought to be someone else's work/stolen/resold/etc.

We're indie. We should, at the very least, protect our fellow indie devs from thieves. Rips aren't a great look, for sure, but no-one is going to think that that Cloud faceset is your own character/work vs Omori tileset rips.

Asking the original dev for permission is your best bet.

Holy crap. This thread's posts have given me a great idea.

You could recreate Sonic and the Chaos Dragons with non-ripped art. Make it better than it was (or keep The Cringe™, your call). It can be like those redrawn Sonichu comics, but with less reminders that Kiwifarms still exists.

No seriously. I agree with not stealing from indies, let alone using original art instead of rips. Or at the least, asking permission and giving proper credit. So something like making the original better than it was with original assets could be a blast.

That's the plan! I'm aiming to make an "enhance" version of this game. Keeping The Cringe™, making some jokes at it's extent, but overall celebrating it and keeping the original vision.
I will credit the original creator and give a link to the game in the bios. It'll be titled something like "Sonic and the Chaos Dragons Remastered" or "Sonic and the Chaos Dragons Remake" (parody of FF7R).

That's exactly the tone I'm going for. Hopefully people are into it.
