I'd state my opinion, but I'm worried this is one of those situations where I'd lose braincells if I did.
I'd tend toward the "What are you doing with your life?" option. Or, perhaps, more accurate to my thoughts on this matter would be "Why can't it be both?" Because it clearly is.
Black is all colors combined. White is the absence of color. Therefore, gray is a middle-of-the-fence answer that everyone hates for some reason.
