PIRACY, WHY?

I modded my PSP but I only get older games to play with it like PSOne games, GBA, etc. Also I always download movies.
Yeah same here. I've got all the original crash games on mine.
All of you dumbasses who pirate things are directly responsible and should be held accountable for all these invasive anti-piracy DRM measures companies are using.
author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=2604.msg48321#msg48321 date=1228174016This is something I can agree with whole-heartedly.
I pirate. Oh well.
I mean I know I shouldn't but whatever, it's a flaw I accept. I make no excuses.

Yeah, good thing TEH RPG MAKERS 2k AND 2k3 AREN'T DIRECTLY ILLEGALZ or you'd be in the same boat as us!
I'd be damned if I'm paying $50 for a game's soundtrack when I bought the game for less than half that (plus I already own the game and could listen to music by turning the game on. Why not cut out the middleman? Oh, wait, the rights of use probably don't include that but I really don't care). I did buy the Okami OST but I am a huge Okami fanboy so I don't care (and it was only $40 after shipping from Hong Kong).
It also saved me $60 and a huge headache. When Spore came out the stories of EA's downloader service (and the alternative, I forget what it was) was almost unanimously horror stories. A hard copy was available but where I live it takes forever for games to get on shelves (and who knows how long they would last). Never mind that the game itself wasn't worth spit.
It has shown me games that I would never had tried if it wasn't for piracy. Valkyrie Profile was one of those rare and damn expensive games (Suikoden 2 also applies here) and if I couldn't just magically acquire it for free, well, I might've skipped Star Ocean 2 as well among several other games. I bought Valkyrie Profile the first chance I got (that wasn't a complete price gouge). This applies to several games like Disgaea as well.
I also have no use for something I bought and will never use. I got Mother 3 when it was translated but I'd be damned if I'm going to fork over cash for something to warm my shelf since I had no way of using an original M3 cart. If the developer/publisher doesn't want to translate it, them I'm not going to pay for it.
Ya~ay I'm trying to rationalizing piracy
Plus the original DRM is IMO far worse than what there is now. All I want to do is play a game and if I have to put in the original CD (mostly because I can't find a no-CD crack) then oh well. I need an Internet connection every two weeks? No problem. I need to find the 32nd word on page 84 paragragh 3 sentence 6? Fuck where'd I put that damn instruction manual?
(I did have RMXP freak out when I changed computers. It didn't like my original serial that I bought so I just cracked it since the legitimate channels would've been more of a headache)

If the RM community wasn't so uppity about pirating RMXP and RMVX then how many people here would've seriously bought it? Barely anyone would've done. The funny thing is that the only reason RMXP and RMVX have official, English versions you can buy is because 2K and 2K3 were pirated to such popularity that Enterbrain probably thought "oh, wait, shit, we can make money out of this".
TL;DR: No piracy = No official RMXP/VX.
I also think that's why iPods exist. Make money off of selling a medium to listen to your downloaded music anywhere you go. That was a great idea, and now they make money up the ass.
I have pirated music, emulators and roms. Most of my music is stuff that I cannot find for the life of me, as I have tried before I downloaded it - like Cam Clarke's CD. I couldn't buy it online ANYWHERE, and trust me, I looked for over a year before deciding just to download it, and THAT was hard to find, too! I feel bad for it, though, as I love CC as a voice actor and if I had the chance to buy a hard copy of his CD, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I have huge CD books full of CDs. I still live in the 90s, as I don't have an iPod or other MP3 player.
I only have a few emulators and roms to my name: a few translated GBA games that I can't get anywhere else (Tales of the World 3, Dragon Quest Monsters Caravan Heart), a few SNES/Genesis games I haven't played in years until I downloaded them - but I owned them when I was a kid (Utopia: Birth of a Nation, Shining Force 1 and 2) and if I found the hard copies of those, I would buy them too.
I have RPG Maker 2000. It's an intergral part of my gaming history and I love it to death.
So track me down if you see fit, idiots, all you'll get is... a bunch of German chocolate candy wrappers! *wink*
I don't like to pirate movies or TV because that is where I want to make my living. However, of course I use sites like Surf the Channel and such because, hey, why the hell not?
If I really like something, though, I try and support the creators by purchasing it at some point.
As for music, they have some kind of a filter in my school network that makes it impossible to download songs with Limewire and the like. So I don't steal music as often as I'd like :P

Reasons for pirating seem silly. It's sort of like people first pirate, and then think of ways to justify it so they're not doing shitty stuff.
I pirate because for selfish reasons and that I'm alienated from the people it affects. It's also easy and anonymous. I do it for obscure things that are impossible to find, and also sometimes things that are really easy to find. Yes, this makes me look bad, but it's the truth, and in this sense, I am in the wrong. I also can think of lots of reasons to justify my pirating, but ultimately they come after my decision to pirate, and not before.
The dude from England who posted about politics/the economy must be really young.

Scientist have proven that the part of the brain that registers rational thought only activates until AFTER whatever the person has done, so any rationalizing someone does is to give the person a reason why he DID it. Unless you actually think about it, you never come up with a reason beforehand. This relates to all parts of life, so people pirate because they want the music, but only come up with the reasons (such as the ones posted here) afterwards, and usually they tend to use that as there base AFTER they have come up with it.
We can't help it, in other words :P

author=http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=1680If you red the rest of the post (linked in the quote from) you'll see a bunch of reasons why the whole online thing is a bad idea. Of course. I suppose games today just aren't good enough to replay in a couple of years...
In the past year I've (re)played X-Com (MicroProse, 1993), Descent (Parallax Software, 1995) and System Shock 2 (Looking Glass Studios, 1999). Several notable things about these game companies:
1. They were awesome.
2. They are gone.
3. I can still play their games.
Major music pirate here. Some ROMs too.
I'm not going to justify piracy as it is an immoral act and should be punished accordingly. Everything's just so easily available, but temptation isn't something totally out of our control.

On the offchance I actually want to watch or play or listen to new media, I go and buy because (get this!) I am too lazy to pirate it. It's simply easier to go rent the movie at the local video store and pop it into my DVD player, or go to Wal-Mart and buy the game.
I used to be be "with it" but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't "it" anymore, and what is "it" is new and scary to me.
It'll happen to you...
I have a few SNES roms, mainly because my SNES is not longer functioning.
Also, Mother 3 (which I would totally buy if they had released it here!)
I don't "technically" pirate music. I use a website called Hype Machine, which goes through music blogs and finds the ones with artists you are looking for. It is not really illegal (at the moment), more of a gray area. Also, it is not always reliable, someone has to have put the music up, and sometime you can't find all of the songs. But, for example, I got all of Coldplay's newest album on there. But generally I try and buy the music.
Thats about it really.

Yeah but what happens when the companies go byebye and their authentification servers no longer exist? Like Shamus Young on Twenty Sided said:
By the time that happens the game will be cracked so that it no longer requires authentication. Spore was cracked before its NA release and only a handful of games have lasted more than a month against crackers. The only exception is MMORPGs (except WoW or other MMORPGs where private servers exist) since nobody can run the server.
I've never bought a single album, yet I have over 15 consecutive days worth of music laying around the house.
I only pirate games that are so rare I'll never find them, or for consoles that are long obsolete (hello Dreamcast), I would never pirate games for my 360.
I do pirate handheld games, got an M3 for my DS and my PSP runs on custom firmware, simply because... Student budget. I can afford games for the 360, but DS and PSP as well? Bugger that

I find the whole DRM thing screwed up. Its supposed to help stop piracy, but the pirates get around it anyway, so in the end it only effects the legal users. (Infact, that's part of the reason why I use a pirated copy of Spore.)
