VIDEO GAME CRITIC WAGER 2023

I'm already thinking about next year's Fantasy league. I have no idea what the results will be for 2022 but they're DANG CLOSE. I've become a fantasy critic goblin. You can become one too.

How it works:

This page explains it better than I can, so we pick games we think we'll do well throughout the year (and ones that might not do well). It's not necessarily about game quality or sales, but how well we think they'll pander to reviewers (websites and magazines). Which is interesting to speculate on as the games aren't out yet and there are several factors to predict. There are some pitfalls to watch out for, if a game isn't even released this year (delayed into the next year) that will count as a zero. There are ways to drop a game before it releases, but there are restrictions on such a thing. If you're feeling risky you can also counter pick someone's existing pick. Other things to note is that I've set rereleases, yearly sports games, remasters (non-remakes), etc. will not be included. The list will likely focus on new mainstream releases. Some of the rules might be hard to keep in mind, but we'll figure it out together. The main thing is to just have fun.

How to participate:

Use this link to join:

1. Sign up for an account if you don't have one (Preferably make your display the same as your forum user)
2. Ask me to invite you to join this league (Post your display name and # here) OR use the invite link: above
3. Create a publisher name (Basically the pretend banner your putting your games under, a fictional brand)
4. Wait for others to join up, draft order will depend on who joined first be RANDOM
5. We then take turns drafting, we'll probably do it passively much like a forum game than in real-time (each person will get 6 games to start)
6. Sit on our asses and wait for the games to come out and occasionally pick more up as the year goes on.

This is all done inside the system so nothing has to be organized here other than who's joining (post your display name+#). The soft deadline date for drafting will be the end of December or January, I can extend it depending on how the interest goes.

THE LEAGUE

Changes this year: I'm going to try and get rid of the mandatory yearly releases/expansion pack stuff as they kind of are mostly duds. I think it's just more interesting to focus more on new game ip or remakes (at least thats what the default slots are suggesting I put, but we'll see). Also let me know how everyone feels about secret/public bidding. I'm leaning on public as I think it can make it a little more strategic.

Entrants---

Shinan

Alright I think we got everyone we'll probably get for this thing, so lets get drafting! I set it to random but I happen to be first interestingly enough. Good luck into 2023 (in general). Be sure to use auto-draft so I have to poke less people.
Time to go look at what games got delayed from last year... And then only pick Strategy games and Warhammer games!

Hehehehehehehehe...Warhammer games huh? Maybe I should bid on those too... 2023 Rematch!!♥
Let The Secret Bid Wars Begin!!♥
You can't believe how upset I was that you stole my Space Marine
Dead Space coming in hot with the 90. Forspoken at dead 69. Fire Emblem Engage surprisingly safe bet. None of my stuff has come out yet but it'll be interesting to see how RE4make stacks up.
Harry Potter and the cursed child is doing great. (in Toronto)

Hogwarts Legacy previews are saying it's the best harry potter game, but divisive.
It was randomly chosen as a counter pick, but i thought I'd stick with it just to see what happens.
Embargo lifts in 5 days.

...I'm gonna get slammed.

EDIT:Maybe this is karma for stealing space marine
-15 counter pick loss for Hogwarts Legacy.

Polygon is making me sweat here, but 81/100 doesn't sound too bad

I keep forgetting how ruthless fantasty game critic is, like it's the safe and unassuming choices that leads to winners here, it's wild to think about.

Another 81.
2 games already in and I'm starting off with an 8 this year, XD.

This interests me, but I'm too lazy to keep up with all these online websites giving their non-important critical opinions since I've found myself to be a way better judge of what games I enjoy than any critic ever will.
Damn, Last Worker got a 74/100 = +4. So much for my VR pick lol.

I feel like maybe I should've waited for the summer to pick up a better roster.
This year started out really strong with like, Dead Space, Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4.
(which got a solid 25 points, i played the RE4 demo about 10 times over the last week - i can't believe how much fun it is for a remake.)

I think this year, starting out strong, is what threw me.
even i didn't expect RE4 to get a 90+. Makes up for the negatives I suppose. I'm thinking of picking up the Suicide Squad but that is such a potential bomb. It's core Rocksteady so the game should be good? But im wondering if the looter shooter elements will leave a bad taste in reviewers mouths. The public opinion just seems so sour, and Gotham Knights and Avengers hasn't been known to crack through making super hero themed looters viable. I'm waiting on other stuff to have confirmed dates before I start securing more picks.

As someone whose probably gonna take 5th this year, I 100% agree with this XD. It's just way too dicey, especially when like...
...does anyone remember Gothan City Imposters? from 2012? That game came and went and at best got like a 65/100.
By the time I got my hands on the demo, the multiplayer traffic was already pretty dead 3 weeks in.

It's really hard to tell how well this thing is going to turn out, especially when they just announced they were pulling the plug on
multiverse till 2024 - there's just way too many things stacked against it right now; that it might just be safer to save those remaining slots
for guaranteed winners, that might come out later this year.

...But the year is already so good!
That's what made counterpicks so hard this year!
like after hogwarts I was stressing out, over which ones can i pick that's going to do the least amount of damage.
it's like a bomb field this year! there's so many good games coming out! lol!
I do safe counterpicks in that I try to pick games that probably won't come out this year meaning it's a nice round 0 (If you're feeling brave you can wait until september/october and pick a game that hasn't been dropped and hasn't gotten a confirmed 2024+ release yet). Alternatively I picked Hades 2 because it has a planned early access release and early access games are ineligible!

I have some games on my watchlist I really want to pick but I want them to have a confirmed release date first :D
(It's Wizard with a Gun, that game looks like a cool smaller game that might crack 80)

I also realized that PC strategy games are probably not good pickings because strategy game reviewers are notoriously stingy with their scores... (If CoH3 had been an action game it'd be 85+ at least!)
I think you might have been lucky (since we have unlimited drops for games that won't come out) because that game did not have good buzz. I know basically nothing about the game but the only thing I know is that it did not look good.
Yeah I keep forgetting what the exact rules are (can't drop til saturday apparently). The game could still get reviewed well! But track record wise having shitty live service elements does seem to bring it down if it's handled very vapidly
Fucking OOOF at my Redfall pick, i should trust my instincts more because I thought it looked unremarkable but hey its a looter sh- oh that isn't exactly a surefire win. I mean it's hard to predict a buggy ass launch but the descriptions describe a very meh 7 regardless.
Jedi Survivor seems like it is basically unplayable on PC but fortunately reviewers might have played it on consoles because it's still scoring okay :D
