--Chapter 13: A Broken World--
Last time, Aerith was captured by Shinra, with Cloud, Barret, and Tifa barely escape alive from Sector 7's destruction. Naturally, the trio was knocked unconscious for a time due to the explosion and landing. However, players do not have a choice as to who to wake up first. At least, as far as I can tell. The cut-scene is from Tifa's perspective as her vision clears, and sees Cloud kneeling next to her. This could theoretically indicate relationship progress with her, but, it's probably that it's scripted to always be this way.
Either way, they do not exchange words as she gets up. The pair move ahead as they hear Barret's cries. Then, when they meet up with him, Barret is beginning to recognize...

...the depths of what Shinra's done. In the original FF7, I'm almost positive that it was Tifa that first recognized that Marlene was actually safe. In this game, it's Cloud that comes forward with that info, with Tifa adding support material. From there, the game pretty much forces a straight-shot to Aerith's house. The side roads aren't blocked off by rubble, but by the game. Okay-ku, then.
When the party arrives, Barret makes great noise that Aerith's mother, Elmyra, does her best to shush. The game made it sound like I might have to do another sneaking mini-game, but, thankfully, that didn't happen.
The game then moves into why the Turks are after Aerith. She's an Ancient. The last of an indigenous species whose values include being in a community with nature, and it's wonders. She goes into detail as to how Aerith came under her care, and a few anecdotes that provide clues to her unique heritage. This follows with the original FF7 in this regard.
After the blat, Cloud moves as if to go into a rescue operation, but, everyone, Elmyra, Tifa, and Barret, plead for him to think things through a little. Barret proposes a trip back to Sector 7 to see what could, if anything, can be salvaged. You can tell he's hoping his comrades made it out okay, but, I suppose we'll see if those hopes are dashed, or fulfilled, in due time.
Again, the game puts artificial barriers up so that I basically have no choice but to move forward with the story. The encounters in the Sector 6 slums aren't terribly different than before. The playground area has certainly seen better days. Sector 7 itself, well...

...yeah, same deal. Seventh Heaven is little more than a pile of rubble now. A cat's meowing gets the party's attention, and Cloud recognizes it as one of Wedge's cats. They follow it, only to have earthquake tremors open the paneling beneath them, and fall down.
The player now takes control of Barret for a while as he tries to reconnect with the others. He comes across Tifa first, but isn't terribly concerned about Cloud. A number encounters later is a rest stop, which gives me a number of premonitions about what might be coming up.
Barret and Tifa may have found their way back up to find an miraculously unconscious Wedge, but also find themselves against a host of...

...whatever the hell these things are. I don't know how many waves of these things there were before a big one came along to crash the party, and became the main target. Cloud arrived with it's defeat, and Barret shooting down walls brings them back to Wedge.
Barret wants Cloud to get Wedge to safety as he searches for Biggs and Jessie, but, Cloud can't help but to be realistic. He saw them at the pillar, and how wounded they were. Barret heaves the limp, but still alive, body of Wedge, and the trio marches to the only safe house they know, Aerith's house.
Thus ends this chapter. The question of what these three will do from here on out is still largely unknown. Maybe we'll find out next time, on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake LP!
--Chapter 14: In Search of Hope--
Last time, Cloud and company managed to get Wedge's unconscious body to Aerith's house. Naturally, Cloud pleads with Elmyra about how they are very likely not ever going to let her go, even if they get what they want from her, and that they should really, really, attempt a rescue. Elmyra is, naturally, not pleased to hear Cloud, and silences him.
I largely suspect Elmyra knows, both in her head, and in her heart, that Cloud is right. However, she isn't willing to admit that to herself. Still, the woman wants some time to think things over, and Cloud is gentlemanly enough to give her some space. Though, he can't seem to get any sleep. Barret's snoring isn't too-too bad, but, Cloud thought he heard something from outside. It doesn't take long to find who made that noise.
Tifa stands in the garden, and there's no doubt that she's got things running around in her head that might cause insomnia. She's lost two friends in Biggs and Jessie. If that wasn't enough, seeing the ruins of Seventh Heaven must have done it's own number on her mood. Now, Cloud's not exactly known for being sympathetic towards others. However, to his credit, he manages to give Tifa...

...a hug (dwaaaaaa!) as she trembles and cries her heart out as a certain theme...
Final Fantasy 7 Remake - "Tifa's Tears"
...plays in the background. After some time, she claims that Cloud is holding her too tight. I kinda have my doubts about that, but, I suppose it's not impossible. Either way, she's thankful for Cloud for what consideration he's shown her.
I don't think it's reading too much into the game to think this particular scene is triggered off of Cloud's relationship to Tifa. To wit, I did a little research on this, and Aerith does seem to be a possible character to appear in this scene, with Barret as a third alternative. It's notable that Aerith being captured by the Turks was a plot point of the original FF7 to have the party move topside. However, since it's possible for Aerith to have a scene here, this indicates to me that there would have to be a different reason for the party to act. Or, maybe she allows herself to get captured after this scene in exchange for Marline? I didn't delve too much on this, so I cannot comment further.
Either way, the game fast-forwards to the next day. This time, it isn't just Cloud asking Elmyra to rescue Aerith, it's Tifa and Barret as well. Elmyra had considered what Cloud was saying, and accepted the proposal this time. Barret has a moment with Marlene before the trio takes to the roads.
The problem is that Aerith is on the top plate. Hell, let's be real. She's very likely tucked away in some lab in Shinra's HQ. The belly of the beast, if you will. Even if she was just on the top plate, all trains that would go there have pretty much stopped running for goodness knows how long. Even if train service is only down temporarily, I've doubts it would be up and running within any reasonable amount of time.
Tifa seems to think that the best lead the party has to getting on the top plate is the mob don in Sector 6. The trek aside, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to ask him anything. To say nothing about how to get him to cooperate with us. Well, perhaps that can come later. For now, there's a bunch of ground to cover.

Uh, let's make that a lot of ground to cover! There looks like there's nine sub-quests that just became available this chapter, so, let's hop to them.
First, a teacher from the Leaf House orphanage is missing her students. Again. A doctor is looking for herbs, among other components, to replenish his stock of medicine that was used after the plate dropped. Yay fetch quests. Three chocobos ran from a stable hand due to the mess of Sector 7. Guess somebody is going to go track them down. A reporter has a scoop on a thief that stole a key to the mob boss' vault. All he wants is information about the thief, but, if we happen to find the key, and the contents of the vault are still in tact, who's to say it was not the thief that took them? Speaking of thieves, a guy was mugged, and wants us to track down that thief, and get his stuff back.
That was what was available in Sector 5, though I had to visit Sector 6 to complete a number of them. As for quests that originated in Sector 6, there's monsters in an underground lab to be taken care of. Let me correct myself on this point. It was one monster, and it was a Behemoth of a beast. The party learns that some goons were scoping out Aerith's house. Said goons sic a Tonberry on the party, which was pretty bad business. Took me a couple of tries, thanks to Chief Knife's insta-death. The guys at the gym dare to challenge Tifa to a contest of pull-ups. This was similar to the squatting mini-game, but with a different button cycle. I wasn't as good at it as the squatting mini-game, but, I was good enough to win, and clear the side-quest. Which was all I really care about. The last one I found was a child who wants to play some music in a jukebox, and we're to provide her with the disks.
The tracks in question follow, courtesy of Toxic Snake.
"Fight On!"
"Good Night, Until Tomorrow"
"Stand Up"
This done, it's time to talk to the don. I'm pretty sure neither Cloud nor Tifa is looking forward to this, and I must share with that sentiment. However, it seems the don has retreated into the sewers down below. The guy that helped us out last time we were in the don's HQ, Leslie, seems willing to help us out once again. Barret's not particularly trusting of him, but, Cloud's reason is that if he dares to betray us, he'll kill him. Which is fine by Leslie.
This time, there's a ladder to the sewers, so it's not a one-way trip like it was before. After a bit of a chase, the party eventually confronts the don, only for him to sic a pet monster of his on them. Though, he does talk a little bit about Shinra's plan to flatten Sector 7 before doing so, as that's the kind of guy he is.
At any rate, the don's out of our reach for now, and all side-quests have been completed. As a parting gift, Leslie gave the party a set of grappling hooks to help ascend...

...a wall. While said wall might serve as a boundary between Sector 6 and 7, it might also serve as a way to get up on top of the plate. With only one way to find out, the trio use their grappling hooks, and zip up beyond the point of no return. What manner of trials await them as they attempt to rescue Aerith? Find out next time on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake LP!
--Chapter 15: The Day Midgar Stood Still--
Last time, Cloud and company used grappling hooks to zoom up a wall in hopes that doing so will lead them to the general direction of saving Aerith from Shirna's grasp. The party's landing point is somewhere on the Sector 7's collapsed plate. The fact that there's a vending machine and bench right before even the first ladder indicates to me this is going to be a long climb.
And climb the party does...

..and loooots of it. With intermittent encounters along the way, some of which feature aerial enemies. Not to mention a boss fight at the end of the chapter, also an aerial enemy. I'm inclined to point out that while Barret has used a machine gun in the past, and is the only ranged party member we've met so far, his most potent weapons have been melee. Now, I could be misremembering, but, I don't think Barret gets melee arm attachments in the original FF7 until after the party leaves Midgar?
I'm certainly glossing over a whole lot of details here, but, there honestly wasn't really that much stuff I found interesting to write about. Still, there's a ways to go. How far? Maybe we'll find out next time on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake LP!
--Chapter 16: The Belly of the Beast--
Last time, Cloud and company climbed up from the Sector 7 plate ruins, finding themselves right smack dab in front of...

...the headquarters of Shinra Incorporated. Barret's got no qualms about suggesting going in from the front door, and making a big production of it. While Tifa stays silent, Cloud suggests, and prefers, a more stealthy approach. Such as going in from the parking garage, and figuring it out from there.
The party hitches a ride on top of an incoming truck to get into the parking garage. However, perhaps being a little overconfident, Barret fell off at a security checkpoint. This alerted the guards nearby, but, as far as I can tell, they did not alert anybody else.
Those mooks taken care of, the question surfaces as to where Aerith might be held. While it might be likely that she's in a lab, Cloud reasons that the lab she's being held in is probably on the upper floors. Tifa's idea is to hack the console in the reception area nearby to get a better idea, but, it's kinda surrounded by a security barrier.
It doesn't take long to notice that all the doors around here require a keycard to open. One couldn't help but to note that there was a keycard inside that reception area that's surrounded by a security barrier. Of course there is.
Tifa has another idea. She suggests that the light fixtures can be used as platforms to approach from the rather conspicuous hole in the reception area from above. She also figures that she's the only one light and agile enough to make it to the keycard unscathed. Barret's a pretty large, heavy guy, and he might trip up if he attempted such a feat. Cloud? Well, he might be able to pull it off. However, it's of note that players take control of Tifa in this situation. So, now, officially speaking, everybody who's been a party-member has had the spotlight for at least one scene in this game.
Tifa's platforming doesn't quite go off without a hitch, as she slips and takes a fall. She landed on a mattress, so the might have softened the fall a bit. However, it's also true that Tifa's been making the Monk class look good since 1997, and that she's a tough cookie. In any event, after taking a bit of time to recover, she finds a way back up from the vehicle showcase section of the building, and takes to the rafters. Then, keycard obtained, and console in front of her, Tifa takes the opportunity to see if she can find Aerith.
Hacking consoles seems more like a job fit for Jessie, but, Tifa manages to get the info that Aerith's being held on the 65th floor. As with the original FF7, the party has the option to either use the emergency stairwell, or use the elevator to get to the 59th floor. Floors above that require another set of clearances. Barret made it pretty clear earlier that he prefers the elevator. This was true in the original FF7, and might have been a point of relationship with him. Likewise, in the original FF7, Tifa suggesting to taking the emergency stairwell as an alternative served as a possible point or relationship with her. However, in this game, she's silent. However, I will note that the gab that triggers on entering the emergency stairwell, Cloud says to Barret that, "it's only 59 floors," to which Tifa says, "No problem!" So, maybe a relationship point that carries over to Episode 2?
That aside, in the original FF7, there's maybe three items you can get by choosing to climb the stairs. That doesn't seem to be the case here. Also, there's visible wear down on Cloud's part as the party climbs, and quite audible wear down from Barret. While I couldn't see any visible signs of wear down from Tifa (she was pretty much always a floor or two ahead of Cloud), her ragged breathing was noticeable as she responded to Barret's incessantries. Though, when Cloud made it to the 59th floor, I saw Tifa breathing hard, and bent over from the workout. Cloud soon joins her in recovery, though, I'm not sure if he really needs to do that, being the mako-infused SOLIDER that he is. Barret shows up in due time, and takes his own turn to recover before the party moves into the building proper.
I certainly don't recall what all players had to do to acquire keycards for floors above the 59th in the original FF7, but, I'm pretty sure going up to a reception desk was not one of the tasks. Or taking the "grand tour" of the building. Talking to the mayor of Midgar, if you can call him that, absolutely was a thing you did in the original FF7, though.
So, the "mayor" in this game is actually pro-Avalanche. This is partially due to Shinra's treatment of him as a glorified librarian. He's got a contact that can get the party as far as the 64th floor, but, beyond that, it's up to them. Of course, the party also learns that there's a meeting of the Shinra executives, and Cloud wants to listen in on that. The party is directed to the air ducts in the building so as to not be seen. Awkward for Tifa, since the entrance to the ducts the party is directed to is in the men's restroom.
The meeting, itself, is exceptionally brief. The director of urban development, Reeve, tries to relay a damage assessment, and plan for reconstruction, but is cut off by both the president, and Scarlett. It really does sound like they are going to abandon Midgar, and construct a newer, better, more mako-sucking version of Midgar in the Promised Land of the Ancients. Assuming Aerith cooperates.
That cooperation is questionable at the moment. The director of science, Hojo, seems to have some plans in mind. One plan is coerce Aerith's cooperation by breaking down her will. Not physical torture, since Aerith is such a valuable resource, but worse, torture of the mind, or spirit. The alternative is to breed her with full-fledged members of SOLDIER that are "S" or "G" types. This goes a bit into...
I don't want to get terribly deep here, mostly because my own understanding of how all this works may be flawed. However, let's start with some definitions. An "S" type can be regarded as a Sephiroth clone, and a "G" type can be regarded as a Genesis clone.
Genesis was a character introduced in Crisis Core - Final Fantasy 7. His importance isn't as-so-much his accomplishments in the events of that game, but more about his ability to assimilate Jenova's cells. Now, technically speaking, the assimilation was incomplete. His body decayed over the course of the game, and perhaps his mental state as well. However, the fact that a human was able to assimilate Jenova cells at all may have been the accomplishment of note in his case.
Then there's Sephiroth. His is a name that's been mentioned a number of times in-game now, but not in the context of this LP as of yet. That might not last long, considering the events of the original FF7. That aside, while he might have a number of military accomplishments under his belt, like Genesis, his importance is more about his assimilation with Jenova cells. His was more complete than Genesis' was. As far as I know, there was no visual wear down on his body. As for his mental state, I'd say it was pretty normal/solid until the events at Neibelhiem.
I'd rather not say much about the events at Neibelhiem in the context of this LP, even under a hide-tag. No small part of that is that it's likely that Episode 2 will cover the event to some degree. An LP of Episode 2 is something I'd do, however, naturally, I can't say when I'll get around to it.
..spoiler territory. In any event, the plan is now to tail Hojo at least until he reaches the lab. Which the party does. Then Barret gets it in his head to take Hojo hostage, only for the situation to be turned around as he sends...

...this whatchamacallit at the party. After a bench-break, the party runs after Hojo, who had set up an ambush of guards. Which, if you ask me, is pretty pathetic. If the party could defeat that experiment-thingy, why would he think this group of five mooks could stop them? He mentions reinforcements, but then, is whisked away by a gaggle of ghosts. The area now clear of opponents, Barret fires off at Aerith's cell, and the door opens. The party has finally gotten back together. Except maybe, just maybe...

...they aren't quite out of the woods yet. The beast runs after Hojo, with the party not far behind. The beast can only manage to knock it's head on the elevator door as it shuts, takes a moment, then doubles back towards the party as they take a combat stance. Only Aerith is not on guard.
Aerith raises a hand to stop the others from attacking it, calling the beast a friend. She then moves forward, and places a hand on it's head. The growling subsides, and it's eyes close for a moment. Things settling down a bit, Barret asks what it is. To which the beast responds, "That's a fascinating question."
Wait, what? This beast talks? You bet he does! As he walks, Tifa notices a "XIII" tattoo on it, and makes a comment on it. He explains that he's designated as "Red 13" by Hojo, and that will be how this LP refers to him going forward.
Cloud then gets another headache-and-visions combo, and we're forced to proceed towards the elevator. More visions and headaches later, he finally passes out at the elevator, and the chapter closes. To see what kind of mess this causes, tune in next time for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake LP!
--Chapter 17: Deliverance from Chaos--
Last time, the party infiltrated Shinra's HQ, but, Cloud kinda got knocked unconscious after yet another bout of headaches and visions. When he comes to, Tifa greets him (a relationship payoff?), then has a look-around. Where is this? Aerith explains that this is where she grew up as a child. No, people, this isn't Sector 5 with Elmyra, her foster mother. This is Shinra HQ, with Ifalna, her birth mother.
Aerith explains, in her own official capacity, that she's the last of the race popularly known as the Ancients, but is called the Cetra. Barret then spouts a few lines, mentioning the Promised Land. It doesn't take much for anybody to come to the logical conclusion that Shinra wants Aerith to guide them to that land, but, she claims she's incapable of doing that right now.
The way she talks, or maybe picking it up from various plays of the original FF7, finding the Promised Land isn't as-so-much a physical journey as it is a spiritual one. While I'm sure that the bigwigs at Shinra could appreciated that nothing worth effort is easy, I'm also positive that they wouldn't exactly believe in spiritual mumbo-jumbo, and concern themselves more with what is tangible.
Either way, a video conference feed breaks things up, the message sent by the mayor with Wedge by his side. Their message is that the old guard of Avalanche has launched an assault on Shinra's HQ, and the building has been set to high alert in response. This means, of course, various routes in the building are sealed off. However, there is a path to where the mayor has set up an extraction point on the roof via helicopter.
Things seem inordinately quiet for a building that's supposed to be under red alert. Sure, Cloud and company fight some leftover thingamabobs, but, they don't really pose any threat. As they move forward into Hojo's lab they come across a rather unique specimen that's been encased here. Barret has no clue what the hell it is, but Aerith knows. She calls it Jenova.
Cloud gets another bout of visions and headaches. However, this time, the visions aren't just visions. Both Tifa and Aerith recognize him, and respond to the presence that is Sephiroth. Cloud breaks out of his trance, only to attack the figure. A useless gesture, as he easily parries the blow, cutting the bridge, and Cloud ends up falling again. The fall isn't as great as before, but, the point still stands.
Red 13 finds Cloud first, and decides to give him a hand...

...as a guest character. I'll note that Red 13 was a fully playable character in the original FF7, but, that doesn't seem to be the case here. I also want to make note that there was a moment, albeit a brief one so far, where all playable characters could have been in the party, but, there didn't seem to be any way to switch party members. As stated, the moment was brief enough to not really matter, but, I'll also note that party-switching wasn't available in the original FF7 until after visiting Kalm. Which is very much after Midgar.
Anyways, we meet up with Barret soon after this. Cloud sees Tifa and Aerith on a floor above, but, even if they go downstairs, the room doesn't connect. Or, perhaps it's more accurate to say there's a security barrier that prevents the party from rejoining. This is apparently one of Hojo's tricks. Red 13 seems to think that we have to cooperate with Hojo's request for data collection, on the promise that he'll let the party out. I dunno if the guy is trustworthy enough to keep that promise, but, there's basically no choice here.
The dungeon becomes one where the player can switch between the two separate parties at certain points, with one party lead by Cloud and the other lead by Tifa. Both go through their own trials and tribulations that I don't care to recount before meeting up.
Up an elevator, back to the room that once held Jeonva. Yeah, she's gone, leaving behind a trail of... blood? The color and texture seems definitely off, but, I'm not sure what else it could be. The game makes no pains in telling the player that this is another point of no return. However, I was committed to finishing this game back in Chapter 14.
The party follows the trail into the president's office. The room is devoid of it's owner, and the trail of blood(?) ended at the entrance to the office. The only clue the party has is a voice coming from somewhere. They follow it to find... the president of Shinra hanging off a ledge of a building? How did he even get there?
I'm sure Barret was tempted to let him fall. Instead, he spares his life, and demands that he clears their names. The president, however, will do nothing of the sort. Pulling a gun on Barret, he makes his own speech about what a world without Shinra (or at least mako energy) might look like, and what kind of world Barret would bring if all he wanted was his name cleared, rather than concern himself with the health of the planet.
Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a blade runs through him from behind. It's Sephiroth. Again. He also runs through Barret like nothing, and a gaggle of ghosts appear to try and protect him. Maybe heal him? Not 100% sure. What I am sure of is that there's a boss fight against...

...Jenova. She gains invulnerability while spawning tentacles for the party to take out, which is... certainly annoying. But, the party manages, and Barret comes back to life, thanks to the ghosts. With Sephiroth gone to who-knows-where, it's high-time for the party to get to the roof, and hit up that helicopter.
If only it were so easy. The Avalanche helicopter gets shot down by a Shinra helicopter. The Shinra helicopter lands, and drops off some guards, and the son of the president, Rufus. Cloud stays behind to buy some time for Barret and the others to make their escape.
Rufus is a lot harder to deal with here than the original FF7. His guard dog isn't too much of a problem, but, the man, himself, counters quite a lot. The only opening he's got in when he reloads his shotgun. Still, Rufus gets away, with the helicopter providing cover fire as he boards. Cloud's brought to the edge of the platform, with the guard rail coming off. Cloud's finding himself hanging for his life now, and it looks like he's barely holding on. That is until...

...Tifa shows up, and saves Cloud's butt. Could be another relationship payoff? The only other character that could really fit here is Barret, so I dunno. Anyway, meanwhile, Aerith, Barret, and Red 13 are on the elevator, minding their own business. Except a gun-bot decided to crash the party, and the protective glass. The elevator went haywire, going right past the floor where Biggs was waiting for them, as he's accosted by ghosts. Again. Guy gets no break, I tell you, but, neither are we. I could really, really, use a hard save point, here, game. Darigaaz.
So, here's another boss fight. The game allows me to acess the menu to rearrange materia, or whatever, but, of course, the save option is grayed out. Of course it is. Whatever. Let's just do it.
Boss disassembled, Barret and the others make it to the ground floor. There, Heidegger had set an ambush for them. Barret is ready to pay Aerith back for taking care of Marlene, and just before she voices any kind of opinion on the matter, a motor is heard from somewhere.
Cloud comes from above on a bike, and clears off some of the guards with his landing. Tifa comes by later on in a mini-truck, with Cloud giving the others cover with his shenanigans.
They go up a floor, and Cloud uses the bike to break the glass, paving the way for Tifa. The vehicles land on the road in relative safety, and the chapter closes. The game isn't over yet, but I've a feeling there isn't much left. How much? I'll have to pick up from the autosave, but, otherwise, we'll find out next time on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake LP!
--Chapter 18: Destiny's Crossroads--
Last time, the party was trying to ditch the Shinra HQ in peace, but, you know what? That's just not gonna happen.
So, just in case anybody had any doubt, this is another bike race chapter similar to Chapter 4. After some number of mooks comes a boss-bot fight, as per the original FF7 for this sequence. However, Cloud sees a vision of Sephiroth at a checkpoint, which makes him stop in his tracks.
The party gets off the vehicles, and we can explore as per normal. There's a bench and vending machine nearby, not suggesting that players should, like, use them as preparation for a possible boss fight ahead. Right? Right.
If not a boss fight, then, certainly, yet another...

...point of no return. Which makes, like, three now. Going into the light takes us to a boss fight with platforming sections as the landscape tears itself asunder. There are subs-shades that are fought individually for a time before fusing into...

...Bahamut. Though, defeating it causes the shades to separate into their individual forms again. The party has to take them down one more time before the main creep can be taken out, thus signalling that stage of the boss fight is over.
The next stage? Sephiroth, himself. Cloud starts off on his lonesome, but, is eventually joined by Tifa then Aerith as the battle continues, with Barret and Red 13 joining in a cut-scene. Sephiroth attempts to escape via a portal, but, with a bit of platforming from Cloud, is pursued into a dark space.
The scene mimics the duel between Cloud and Sephiroth in the original FF7, but, since we know there's more game, even if it's not contained in this game, we know who's the winner of the ensuing bouts. After which is a medley of scenes.
The first is in Shinra HQ, as Rufus sits on father's chair, and becomes the next president of Shinra. Yeah, he's not going to make trouble for the party later at all, right? Riiiight.
The next is, well, I'm not entirely sure how much I want to say about it. For now, let's just say a lone swordsman stands among the mountains, surrounded by dead bodies of Shinra guards.
After that is back in Midgar, Sector 7. There's a line formed for a community-run food stand to support the displaced families of the sector, as workers move various piles of rubble in an effort to clean up and/or rebuild. The sign for Seventh Heaven is hefted down, and placed along side what remains of a building. Perhaps, the bar, itself? Hard to say, when the entire sector is basically in ruins.
Next up is Sector 5, the orphanage house. The camera pans toward some children, then up to the upper floor of the house where we see Biggs laying on a bed, then opening his eyes. How can he still be alive, and here, though? That's what I want to know.
Either way, next up is Elmyra's house in Sector 5, where we see Marline watering a plant. Elmyra calls for the girl, and as she starts to move, a droplet falls from a leaf. Marline pauses, sensing her adopted father.
This provides a nice segue to Barret...

...and the others, viewing Midgar from afar. Tifa asks the appropriate question, "So, what now?" The response? Sephiroth. So long as he's alive, Cloud will go after him. The others have zero qualms joining him in this mission, though, each having their own reasons for doing so. The party moves off-camera, with Aerith staying behind to speak one more line, then the credits roll.
My clear game save indicates a play-time of 42 hours, 10 minutes, and 3 seconds. So, yeah, the summation of this game being "40 hours of Midgar" seems an accurate enough statement.
So, what's the state of Episode 2? I don't pretend to know what gaming news service to trust, but, I tried looking up on several sources via a Google search about a release date, or other news. What I could gather is that the title of the game is something like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and the currently slated release date is between quarter 4 of this year and quarter 1 of next year. That's for the PS5 exclusive release. If Rebirth follows the path of Remake, then I would also expect an exclusivity window for the Epic Games Store before coming to Steam when it does get a release on PC. So, for somebody like me, we're probably talking more like quarter 4 2025 to quarter 1 2026? That's assuming the release date doesn't get pushed back, and they almost always do.
I've already said this in the opening post, but, I can't help but to worry that there won't be any kind of carryover data from Remake to Rebirth. Or, it would be like the carryover data present in the Xenosaga series, where players would only get an additional costume for a character, or something equally and incredibly lame.
Again, I also can't help to worry about how many episodes this game will be, considering the pace at which the story seems to be going. I wouldn't dare to expect that the games would fit together like World of Xeen, but, I suppose this game could also follow the example of Mass Effect? In that each game would be it's own self-contained entity, but, a player can get more out of the games if they play them in order.
In any event...
"Prelude - Reunion"
...I feel accomplished enough about finishing this game as to not go after the Intergrade content within the context of this LP. I can't say with any certainty that there will be another LP between this one and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but, who knows? Find out next time on... uh, never mind.
They should of done a PS4 2 or 4 TB release now, that way, the whole game could actually fit in instead of relying on graphic impressions and loads of memory for a next gen. Part One was quite impressive. I guess I've to wait quite some time to get a PS5 in the future.
So, while the site was down for the count, I did acquire, and play, Final Fantasy 7 - Rebirth as well as play through the Intergrade content of this game. In regards to Rebirth, the time spend was on the order of over 100 hours. Which would be, like playing the original FF7 at least twice over, if not three times over.
That said, I more or less enjoyed my time with Rebirth. I did not, hoever, go through the motions of posting an LP of the game when the site came back. I will say that the open world formula used the "viewpoints" concept (ie: climbing certain points in the game, and interacting with them, revealed various activities) to some effect. This move isn't redefining genre standards, by any stretch, but, it worked well enough. Also, seeing Tifa and Cloud kiss on-screen during the skywheel date made me happier than I would like to admit. I don't quite remember there being as many BS faux-deaths in Rebirth as there was in Remake, but, I'm not exactly sure where they are going with the Zack sequences, and him being some kind of focal point for/of parallel worlds?
It kinda irks me that the "carry over data" bonus is little more than a summon. Two if you also have clear game data for the Intergrade content. No extra/bonus relationship points, or other carryover from the last game. This likely means that there might be a similarly small reward for players who can use "carry over data" from Remake and/or Rebirth into whatever they'll call the third game. I guess I gotta be prepared to, once again, ramp the affection value of Tifa for that game? I hope that'll be my only complaint for FF7RE3, but, I guess we'll see.

Oh, yeah, carry over data from the previous game/s would be cool. Maybe they'll make an ultimate version after all three games are completed that allow for such a thing, but I think it's okay since the bonding in Remake is a whole different system than the one in Rebirth (and we got the pay-off in both - the date in Rebirth, the night scene in Remake).
Actually, thinking about it more, it's probably for the best. Imagine you got to Rebirth and wanted the date with Barrett or Yuffie but had farmed points with only Tifa or Aerith and that put you too far ahead to allow for that unless you neglect a ton of side stuff. It's probably fairer to allow for people to go after their preferred dates from a blank slate starting point.
Overall I really, really liked Rebirth. Like... so much so that I hope they continue the trend in the next part. The battle system was fun and at times pretty challenging, the side content and bonding was great, loved a lot of the minigames and just the whole vibe of the world and characters. I don't know where we're going with the story but I'm here for it. XD
Also the music is so fucking good.

I suppose there is some sense in resetting affection values. Though, I would appreciate something a bit more than a summon (or three, or whatever) if I have the trilogy?
Gongaga's kicked my ass, absolutely.
*Edit: I also could not help by to cry at/during "No Promises to Keep".
It took me a bit off-guard, because I had the game on the Japanese dub through the entire run, so, I naturally expected to hear Japanese lyrics, rather than English ones?

oh, I agree with the need for something more as a "gg for playing the first game".
over 400 songs on the ost. they just went wild with it and I adore the way they wove the music together, in and out of battle and scenes, the melodies carried through other songs, the new and old stuff. ugh, they went crazy with it.
and yes, no promises to keep caught me by surprise and oof, such a great song.
lest we forget the true mvp song of the game. how do you say bow wow wow?
also, it's confirmed we're getting Queen's Blood in the next game and I am HERE for it. I want a stand-alone game of Queen's Blood. If they're smart they'll market that after they finish the third game because holy shit, is that a fun-ass card game. triple triad, eat your heart out. XD
