There's a point in the story of the game I'm making where some powerful people temporarily join the party for a small dungeon. They have some good gear, and I don't want the player to take the gear for themselves. Is there some sort of plugin I can use that makes the player unable to alter a party member's equipment?

Give the characters the "Lock Equip" trait on all of their equipment slots. Once something is equipped to that equipment slot, the player won't be able to unequip.

In the actor tab of the database, open the character you want to be unequippable, go to the trait section, in the trait menu, go to the equip tab, tick "Lock Equip", and select which equipment slot you want to lock. Do this for all equipment slots.

If you don't want all of their equipment slots in use, and want to make sure the player doesn't accidentally lose items by equipping these temporary players with items and accessories in their unused slots, use "Seal Equip" for those unused slots and that will prevent them from being equipped.

DO NOT CONFUSE "LOCK EQUIP" AND "SEAL EQUIP". If you "Seal Equip" a slot that's being used, the weapons that are equipped from the database will still be there. Seal Equip doesn't stop the developer from equipping them and it doesn't stop the player from unequipping those slots.

Doing this is easy and requires no plugins. Lock Equip is how to do it as someone has already said. But not only can that easily be done, but characters can be set to be controlled by the AI as well. What I am wondering is what RPGMZ means by "reserved party members" and their experience points.

A character in "reserve" is not in the active battle party. If "reserve member exp" (or whatever it's actually called) is enabled, they earn experience along with the active members. Otherwise, they do not earn experience.
