INTRO SEQUENSES, HELP ME!!

Right, I'm new to this RPG Maker XP business, although I'm quite excited about a game idea I have right now.

Just wondering, I want to make a short screen that will pop up before the first map, which will have some text that pops up to set the scene (you know just a black screen with a couple of lines of text).

The only way I know of doing this is to create a blank map and then have an autorun event that displays text and then jumps to the next map. By doing this, however, I have to have my character somewhere on this screen else the game will throw up an error. Is there a better way of doing what I want or is there a way to hide the hero?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS If anyone knows of any good tutorials for getting to grips with RPG Maker XP, send a link my way. I haven't really found any good ones (other than guides on the scripting language).

Thanks!
Go into your start party in the database and remove all heroes, including the main one.

Add characters with an event once you want to be visible.
Or you could cover your map in a black tile, set it to cover everything and you don't need to erase your database.
I don't mean removing the heroes from the database, I mean removing them from the initial party. Otherwise it would be impossible to ADD them again once the intro is finished.
What i usually do is just change the hero's character graphic to blank and then once the text dissapears i just insert the event "Change party graphic". But i am probably doing it the hard way. :-\
That's a pretty easy way to do it, I just find it inconvenient for playtesting. But it's no more so than adding a party member back.
I had that kind of problem for a while too, only more-so with scene switching...like going from what the party is doing to the ominous forshadowing conversation of a villain on the other side of the game... for a split second when the screen shifts the hero would still be sitting there. Even the blank graphic for the hero via party change didnt work.

Here is what you do so that you don't have to temporarily change anyones graphic or remove them from the party. Go into the database and just make a flat-out blank character, with no graphic whatsoever. Name him something stupid so you can tell who it is, and go to the System Tab in the Database and set the initial party to be just him. After the event, remove him from the party and add in the real hero, and you can just refer to this blank character whenever you need the party to disappear. The only problem with that is when you wanna test your game and you ARENT doing so from the beggining you have to change it back.
