If you don't know about this, I implore you to educate yourself. It's one of the longest standing and influential conflicts in the entire world.

With that said, let's start of the topic with one of the latest developments; Israel Destroys American School in Gaza, Kills Guard. There are usually some pretty strong feelings about this, and I want to start a discussion on what you guys think.

War is unfortunate. War is hell. Things get blown up. People die. A soldier's job is to kill people and smash things.

But that's reality. If Mexico was shooting rockets at American border cities, we'd be pretty pissed too. Difference being, Mexico would probably condemn the culprits and back down at the slightest hint of American pressure, whereas Hamas is dedicated to destroying Isreal.

So, while it saddened me to learn that this conflict flared up, it disgusted me even more to bear the criticism and whining tossed at Isreal for protecting their own people. I hope Isreal destroys Hamas completely, which would be good for everyone.

This.

Also, there is no way to justify Hamas when the have no respect for their own people and use them as human shields.

It's unfortunate innocents have to die.

Edit by Karsu: I do not necessarily disagree with your point, but seriously CP. Make your point without being a jerk and posting shock images. People look at this site from work.

-Okay, apologies. I merely feel that nukes aren't something to be joked about.

That's disgusting. Also, I can't believe you took Masamune's comment seriously.
FTR, I edited out CP's dead baby-esque picture.

Also, this topic is destined for a flame war.

My opinion? Honestly? I think the Palestinians are retards for electing Hamas, and I think the Israelis need to seriously start questioning the futility of this situation.

I'm outta here.
I think the Israelis need to seriously start questioning the futility of this situation.

How would that work, exactly? Hamas won't stop until every Israeli is dead.
I still have trouble remembering who's who.

What's the deal, anyway? The middle eastern people has been at "war" with each other for 8000 years. I doubt it'll stop tomorrow.
It's hardly the same thing, kentona!
According to current estimates, it seems that about 880 people in the Gaza region have been killed so far, with just over half of those being civilians, and over half of those civilians being children.

Just for contrast, Israeli deaths appear to total about thirteen.

(Also, as far as injuries go: 3,490 Palestinian, 119 Israeli.)

I'm not saying Israel should lie down and take a government sitting next door possibly chucking rockets at them during "peacetime" (if such a thing can be said about that area) and vowing to slaughter them mercilessly, but I think it's pretty clear that something's fishy about all this, and that Israel is probably being really reckless, and honestly, there's probably so much bad blood that Israel is almost as bloodlustful as Hamas at this point, at least to the extent that they're probably willing to go overkill in the matter. The way I see it, if the deaths on your own side number so few, you can afford to be a lot more careful when shooting bombs at the opponent.

A friend of mine also knows someone (non-Hamas and a civilian, of course) who was recently killed in one of the Gaza bombings by Israel.

To give more perspective, in Gaza, 8 U.N. foreign aid workers have died already. To make this point more clear, the number of U.N. foreign aid people Israel has killed in this action number well over half Israel's own number of deaths incurred.

Obviously the Palestinians and Israelis would each be giving their own biased views/numbers of all this, but a lot of this information is coming from U.N. sources.

Oh, I forgot to mention: Four of those Israeli deaths were from friendly tank fire.

It's not like it's equal force. Israel has one of the biggest most well equipt army int he world and Hamas has a few rockets. There's reasons for Hamas's election and the election itself is well documented. There's reasons the Middle East is angry at Israel. And there's reasons that all countries except America are condemning Israel's attack.

Well, it is really! Your own source supports this:

History's legacy created divisive issues between Palestinians and Israelis. Judea, home of the Jews in ancient times, was conquered by the Romans and renamed Palestine. Palestine was later conquered and inhabited by Arabs for over a thousand years. The Zionist movement arose to restore the Jews to Israel, largely ignoring the existing Arab population.

Both sides lay claim to the same land, and they are fighting over it! Plus, their cultures, though nearly identical, are structured in such a way that it is strongly insular and promotes a heavy in-group/out-group bias.
There's some pretty big breaks between those. The thousand years of Arab life for example.

Eh. Both sides have a case for israel being their "homeland."

If you wanna go by who was there first, it was not the arabs. Not the muslims anyway.

If you wanna go by who was there the longest (in recent history), it was the arabs. Although that's not the case going far back into the B.C. years.

Humanity is a species just barely out of the swamp. What do you expect? Children will be children - give it a few thousand more years.

Yeah, but the difference is now that one of those groups is one of the most powerful nations in the world and the other is basically people banging rocks together, and they're still fighting.

When I saw you posted in this topic I was really hoping it would be something relevant and intelligent.
