MUSICAL RPG?

An idea I've been thinking about for a while. Yokai Story gets higher priority, though.
The game is set in the land of Musicaa, in which the country of Brasse is currently at war with the country of Violisse (they duke it out using giant robots run by the kinds of scrolls you see in player pianos). During this time of strife, an aspiring musician somehow comes across a really cool instrument that he's never seen the likes of before; one that fuses the loudness of Brasse with the precision of Violisse. Forming a band of like-hearted entertainers, he goes off to show the world how cool he is.
Unfortunately, our hero's new instrument is none other than the legendary G'Tarr, the Instrument of Destruction. Our hero now not only must contend with vicious creatures, giant robots, and other scum of Musicaa but also escape from the Conductors, ethereal beings obsessed with fufilling the G'Tarr's malevolent destiny. Will our hero and his gallant band inadvertently sound the Apocalypse? Or is there a way out?

I really dig the idea of a musical RPG. I've always wanted to play Rhapsody for that reason...
And I think the music puns are cute. It reminds me of Brave Fencer Musashi, what with the allyucaneet kingdom and thirstquencher empire...everything was a food pun.
But that would be really cute, I think. ^.^

Some of the puns are groaners, but the idea is cute. Could be a lot of fun in an off beat sort of way, but would really need a lot of good custom music to pull off the theme. Also, a distinct visual flair would help.
You make a good point I feel stupid for missing.
You'd need very creative and catchy origional music in a music RPG. I think I'd become quickly irritated otherwise, it just makes sense. You'd think that'd be the first thing...*sigh*
It'd be really neat if you could incorporate things like that into the battle system, like skills that you have to play a seiries of notes to get the max damage, ect. Just an idea. Dunno if it would be implementable.

It could be something like Mother 3 where you do additional damage by keeping rythem with the battle theme.
I have to wonder if that's even possible in, say, RPG maker. I'd have no idea how to do that if there is a way.
You could have a similar function to avoid traps and such in a dungeon. Screw up and you're eaten/burned alive/sexually assaulted by an orc, (major HP damage there...v.v and your pride stat goes down.), something of the like.

A battle system like Earthbound 3 would be pretty cool, but I can't code to save my life. So we'll see.
You know how in some games (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, etc.) each character in your party has a different theme song? What if, through the often-useless Accessories slot in the Equip menu, you could equip different theme songs to your characters? These theme songs could give the characters new abilities, raise their stats, and provide a bit of atmosphere. Quiet theme songs could grant healing techs and mind boosts, while bombastic theme songs could make your character an attacking powerhouse. Characters with ridiculously insane theme songs (like Magus's Theme in Chrono Trigger) could get boosts to all areas. It's a stupid idea, but it is music-related.
Another idea which is a bit more mundane could be that various pieces of sheet music are hidden around the landscape, a la Eternal Sonata. Completing these sets of music grant you new abilities. The sheet music can be hidden in bookshelves, treasure chests, drawers, etc.

Sei and I had this great idea for a musical RPG, which we called "Sing!" to go along with his "Verb!" meta-series (Jump!, Push!, Pray!, Shoot!, Hump!....he hasn't actually said anything about last one yet, but you know it's next). Lovely little idea combining aspects of Rhythm games, Karaoke games, and RPGs, with a cool "Spell Creation" system that based the effects of magic on sounds tha the user could say into it, and the effectiveness on rhythm....some of this might be stuff my memory is filling in after the fact, because I'm not sure if we actually solidified some of these concepts.
It was brilliant, but even once we found a composer, Sei went and turned his back on Sing! in favor of whatever silly game he was working on at the time. Just like he did for Anything Under the Sky. These things are every my fault.

Hey I now of a script that would totally match this idea. I think it's called the dance combat script (DCS) it works similar to those dance games here a button moves down the screen and you have to press it at the right time. Get it right and it's a critical hit and the words perfect come up. I think there is also Miss, Good and Great that appear but I can't remember what each do. I can't seem to find the script anywhere but I would suggest you take a glance for it.
I think this is a great idea! Keep it going.

Nippon Ichi's first game was called 'Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure' and pulled off something similar, though it's very rare now (I've never met anyone else who has played it) check it out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhapsody:_A_Musical_Adventure
Your idea sounds great - if it becomes a community project then I'd be glad to help out with it. I'm a fan of bending the traditional rpg conventions where possible :) I'm also a very prolific writer / professional designer (published) so helping with a script (script - not scripting, lol) would be great fun for me.

The game I'm working on employs a lot of musical elements in the story and gameplay, but is intended to work in somewhat of a realistic/serious way. Not like "play flute to destroy demons heh".
My Zelda game implements a veery familiar Zelda element.... an ocarina.
Do I even need to say how it works in game? It will be a necesity in the game.
And by the way, an all-musical RPG is a nice idea, but would be hard to get right. If you can get it right, though, it would be really good.

Yeah, in Wilfred the Hero all of the puzzles were music themed and really retarded. My favorite was the one where you had to spot which piano was out of tune and I got emails from tone-deaf testers who couldn't get past the section, so I added a cop-out that appears if you fail too many times. I don't think you guys realize how clever I had to be to get a MIDI piano to have one note sound legitimately like a slightly out of tune piano.
This sounds like a neat idea I guess! One thing I have thought about experimenting with would be an RPG where you actually had to play notes on a MIDI keyboard in order to enter battle commands. That's basically limiting your audience in a huge way though! Another alternative I thought of would be to have an image of a keyboard going along the bottom of the screen, with the keys 1234567890-= imposed on those keys, and you would access different commands by playing different notes or different intervals. Each note you played would access a different part of the music, or if you played more than one note, it would play chords or something. Each character could be equipped with a different instrument, and . . .
. . . actually . . .

It's probably not as rare as you think. I saw a huge stock of them at a local GameStop not too long ago.
A musical RPG would be cool if it integrated a lot more music stuff in it than "My guitar only has 20 MP left in it!". Like what Ciel is talking about.
