CAN FANGAMES BE GOOD?

I make these general observations about fan games.

1) Yes, they CAN be good. Some good ones exist.. even, gasp, Final Fantasy fan games!

2) They often aren't good. In my opinion, completely unsupported by anything except the amount of games I've seen or played, more games that are *original* are good and more fan games are bad. My guess is that fan games tend to be more rushed in creation and have less care taken in storytelling, or in other departments like battle system, dungeons, dialogue, graphics, etc.

Please no.

MODIFY: Also I hate fangames because I have made two and only, like, one person played each. :<

Now come on...is it really a fair reason to hate fangames because yours were not played? Come on, gimme a link and I'll play them! ;)

EDIT: I saw your reply to ChaosProductions soon after posting. My bad, I'll go download and play now. >_> *slinks away*

I also believe that fangames are viewed with a negative light not because of their construction, but because of being compared to their source material. If someone makes a Final Fantasy VII fangame, then any fan of Final Fantasy VII will instantly compare the two games in their mind, and go into the fangame with preconceived notions of what should and should not be.

Could I BE any more Chandler Bing from Friends (TM)?

One of the first RM games I ever played (a long, long time ago) was this BoF fan game called Legacy of the Dragon. Despite its numerous grammatical and spelling errors I found myself really loving the game, probably the most time I've ever spent on an amateur game (excluding The Way I guess?)

Maybe I'm just easily impressed, because I was amazed at how Garde Astale (I THINK that was the developer's name) "coded" things like dual-attacks, and apparently very effectly merging storyline's from various Capcom games (Ryu + Megaman was the best idea ever, really. :D) It was probably a graphicsl mess but at that point in time I knew very little about RM standards.

I think in the end it depends on what your expectations are, really. I myself wouldn't mind any fangame that played well above all else, never mind the fancy graphics and brand name.

EDIT: I seem to have found a download link, thanks RMN~
yeah my fangame was pretty good so idk what to think

THIS. As a guy with nothing but fangames under my belt, I can attest to the validity of this notion. I don't get a lot of comments in the threads I make, but sometimes (and especially on forums where I'm not well known) I get questions like "why don't you use Pokemon graphics instead?" "Isn't RTP better for medieval RPGs?" I can only shake my head and sigh anymore.
Trick isn't to try and make your fangame part of the main storyline, but instead branch it out from the existing one. For example, don't make Final Fantasy VII-2. Instead make a game that follows the FF7 formula or is based on its world but make it about a side-character or something that wasn't covered in an earlier game. ALAS--- do NOT try to change that existing story.
