i just downloaded a .exe that lets you edit your game while in test play. Has anyone ever tried that. I don't wanna use this if it will corrupt my game. Feedback please.

I've never heard of something like that, but I wouldn't recommend using something like that. Why risk it?
I'm pretty sure that for rpgmaker 2k/2k3 it's the actual editor that has to be patched for the game to be editable while in testplay.

An alternate way to do it would be creating a shortcut the rpg_rt.exe that allows you to run in testplay mode (see this tutorial of mine: http://www.rpgmaker.net/tutorials/109/), that way, you could open up the game in testplay mode first, then start up the editor to edit stuff while playing.
well, i found it on GW. its posted in the utility section of there forums. If its posted there. they must trust it, but still I don't know.
yeah, i jus wana know if it will mess my game up?
I haven't heard of anything like that. If you do use it make sure you keep a backup of your game somewhere just in case things go badly.
I can predict some nasty errors popping up.
Like I said, I wouldn't risk it.
ok, i wont use it. you guys are right it isn't worth the risk
It's Guts' one from GW right? I use it ALL the time and even use a lot when I'm digging through other people's games. Nothing bad has happened and I'd probably risk it. Just make sure to back up your project, this goes for whether you use the patch or not!

I second what ZPE mentioned.

I use the patch and from what I've seen the game compiles and creates all the resources, maps, etc at startup. So if you change a map in the editor while you play and visit it on the same playthrough it's not as if you will see the updated version.

However, just to be on the safe side. I don't actually save my project until after I finish testing it.

I recommend you back up your project regardless. If you've put enough effort into it to not want to start over from scratch, then it's definitely worth it.
I have used it before and it doesn't really do anything bad. It lets you modify your game while testplaying, but in order to see the changes you made you have to quit and open the game again, so it isn't really useful.

...so it isn't really useful.

Actually, this tool would be quite useful. Just because you don't see the changes right away doesn't mean otherwise. It would be helpful because as you are testing, you could look for spelling mistakes, easy-to-fix glitches, and even dialogue that runs out of the window. Using this would mean that you can quickly fix these eroors, and get on with testing, rather than saving, quitting, changing it, reopening, and loading your game again.

Where can I get it? ;D

True, True.
I need to get a VX version of this now that you mention it.
Haha, yeah, I could use one of those too!
Well, I'm not an impatient person. I normally sit down and playtest with a notepad by my side in which I record any glitches or other discrepancies I find, then I run through that list afterwards.

But if it helps some people then good for it.
You don't really need this. You can just play your game (like you'd play any other RM game), but have still RPG Maker open, so when you come across an error, you can easily fix it.

No need to download anything extra. :p

But then you'd have to:
1. Save
2. Exit game
3. Find the error and fix it
4. Load game

But suppose your game doesn't allow saving at some points, Or your in the middle of an extremely long cutscene that has some minor spelling errors.

Well, you can always play the game from your folder instead of playtesting it in RPG Maker. It's the same thing, it just takes a little longer to get to the folder, and it allows you to edit stuff with RPG Maker as you play.

You could do that in VX by directly playing from the Game.exe file in your folder (instead of running a playtest), and editing all mistakes you find as you come across them, in the Editor.

That's actually pretty smart thinking, I for one, never thought about doing that :I
Thanks for the tip, this will make my game making a tad less stressful :)
