Brandon:

I am (2.) of vocabulary. I challenge anyone to stump me on a word's meaning without using outside resources. Just anything you can come up with off the top of your head.

Adscititious.

Musculade.

Paramnesia.

Transpicuous.

Erotesis.

Do it.

Also, add katzenjammer and scirrhostity to this list Max.
I'm not challenging Max, but I often inform others that I retain an extensive vocabulary.

And I can't really think of any words right now. I try to use words I know only.
Irony.

I know examples of irony, but I can't give an exact definition if asked.
sun?light? ?/?s?n?la?t/

â€"noun the light of the sun; sunshine.

I don't understand this concept....

affect is a verb (proper grammar will affect you).

effect is a noun (it will be a positive effect).

I feel that your motivation here is rather transpicuous, motivating a cathartic erotesis on my part, as well as a dreaded sense of ennui. Have I been suffering from a kind of reduplicative paramnesia regarding my own literary prowess? Would it be worth it, worth the adscititious act of googling the meaning of each of these words, to leave you only to walk away and musculade: how could he know all those words?

I call bullshit. There is a certain level of obscurity I will not cater to.

There is nothing magical about having a large vocabulary. It just means you are a bigger, fatter loser than us cool kids. Also that you probably read more often.
Hey this isn't true. =[

Hey, katzenjammer isn't obscure (besides, it's fun to say). You got me on scirrhosity though, I can't remember why I know what this one means (a carcinoma that is both hard and fibrous), or even if I spelled it correctly.

I would point out that I as well have a rather large vocabulary, but I would have thought that the Real Men Network would have several people who do.
Nobody has noticed that the first two posts STILL don't get what "pretentious" means?

I guess they managed to miss the other, more common definition somehow. Here are some snippets:

"Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified."
"Characterized by an exaggerated show of dignity or self-importance"

Word Tutor gives the gist of it: "Trying to seem more important or valuable than is true"

So it isn't just being "showy" or whatever, at all. You can do that without being at all pretentious.

I agree. With so much communication being on the interwebs now, thesaurus.com and dictinary.com are ready at a moment's notice, so any jackass with the intellect of a potted plant can make themselves sound smarter by using unnecessarily verbose language.

That said, it's still preferable to use correct syntax and grammar, not misspell or invent words, and just generally be efficient in communication.

Neither of you is a writer.

Well that is not fair of me to say. Lots of writers think that being a thesaurus whore is the same as commanding exact, precise diction. I heard that in my classes several times, and it made me bristle, because I, however, don't subscribe to that school at all.

I believe a good writer never uses a thesaurus.

It's common knowledge that one should never use a ten dollar word when a five cent word will suffice. Less common wisdom, however, states that ultimately, you want to use the exact right word. And sometimes the write world is like a twenty fucking dollar word. Like erotesis.

Jesus Christ Max . . . I hope this whole thing is a giant troll because like I hope you aren't actually this condescending.

Anyway it's not a troll (as far as I know I don't do that) but I would best describe my tone as "tongue firmly in cheek" if that helps. I am not like being serious.

Okay, that's what I thought. It was just . . . after a couple of days I was getting worried.
Hyperextend, -ing

I'm not even sure if this is a word or not, but I use it, as a friend I once had used it and I've used it since.

There's two that I sort of know and don't know:

1) Chautauqua (Maybe Canuck can explain this one to me?)

2) Succinct (I sort of know what it means, but not quite.)

I could look these up, but I like hearing people try to explain things.

I take it we both are readers of Pirsig?

I don't know the words exact definition. I thought it was a native American (which tribe I forget) word for story, but within the language the word story means more than it does in English (something to do with a journey with a purpose or something), so he used the word in its original language.

In Lila he did a similar thing with the Japanese concept (word) "mu" (?), and with that word I think he took a few liberties with the word to make it fit his own, so maybe he did the same with that word.
