??VARIABLES??

(RPG Maker XP)
Yeah I'm already back. Okay, so here is the new problem. I want to learn about variables. I know they are the only way to go if you want to make your character capable of fishing, pickpocketing, etc. I just don't know how to set them up. Could somebody give me a run through on something basic, like said pickpocketing or fishing? I'm trying to incorporate as many functions as possible into my game, to give it a real 'do anything, go anywhere' feel.
UPDATE TO REQUEST HERE-> I almost have the variable thing figured out. But not quite. How much is like a hundred percent or whatever on the greater than or equal to or less than thing? I'm really confused. Oh and I don't have any idea what the local switch thing is. Plus I don't know what triggers are or how to use them. Yes. I'm a noob.
Oh and P.S. I still don't know how to set up a title cinematic.

If no one answers you by the time I get back, I'll give you an in-depth picture tutorial. (I'm at work right now.)
Variables are numbers. You can use them to set conditional branches, i.e. "If variable x is equal to/greater than/less than/etc. x, do this; if not, do this." You can modify a variable with an event by setting it to, adding, subtracting, multiplying by or dividing by a number, or a value such as Actor Level, Gold, etc. (Note that if you're using RMVX, you can't properly multiply or divide variables without a script; ask GreatRedSpirit for that).
I hope that's not too complicated.

The first question, I'm not sure I understand correctly.
A local switch is the same as a normal, or global, switch. All it is is a variable that can only be changed to ON or OFF (TRUE or FALSE). The only difference is that a local switch is only used WITHIN the exact event you're editing. Normal switches can be used by any event.
A trigger sets how an event is run. For example, if you choose Action Button as the trigger, that means you need to move your character next to (or on top of) the event and hit the action button for the event to begin. Player Touch means you don't need to hit the action button, but need to walk next to (or on) the event. Event Touch means that if another event that happens to be moving around comes in contact, the event will start. Autorun means the event will run as soon as the map containing the event is loaded. Finally, Parallel Process is for a looping event that will run continually while you are in the map that contains the event.
Ask away with more questions.
