ATLUS AND REASONS WHY THEY ARE GREAT

Really? I heard Megami Tensei means "Goddess Reborn", which would perfectly fit with the original game's plot. "Shin" is basically the Japanese equivalent of "Super" in SNES games. I heard somewhere that it means, loosely translated, "true".

So, thus, Shin Megami Tensei means "True Goddess Reborn".

Yeah I've played Revelations on a PSX Emulator and I really enjoyed it.

Digital Devil Story is the original one as Megami Tensei I and II. Then it had Shin Megami Tensei I, II, If..., NINE, III (Nocturne). Theres the Devil Summoner games another branch as well as the well known Persona games. Finally theres the two Digital Devil Saga. Well if this does come to the PSP then I'll play it. Also for the 360 that would be great, although if P5 came out on the PS2 I wouldn't be angry.

EDIT: I'm not an expert on it. The only SMT games I've played were:

Revealations: Persona
Persona 3
Persona 4
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
(Only due to the recommendation of Karsuman)
The only Atlus game that is good is the rehash of River City Ransom. /topic

Shin Megami Tensei 3 and Digital Devil Saga 1 were, like, one of the best games I've ever played, but many other games in the franchise seem really dumb and not my cup of tea.

Persona 1 and 2/2,5 - great concept, BORING gameplay and a really botched up demon talk system/persona gain system (they make grinding 3 times more painful).
Persona 3 and 4 - haven't even bothered with these two, because when I hear anything about JAPANESE SCHOOLS I get shivers (couple it with a sim and you get...). Plus the OSTs are awful, save for a few tracks.

SMT 1/2/IF - great story and graphics, but gameplay is way below today's standards. Endless fighting and, rarely, a story progressing cutscene. Demon/item management reminiscent of first Dragon Quests... don't bother unless with codes.

Devil Summoner games - never played, but the new one (someone versus the Soulless Army) sounds REALLY stupid.

Untranslated MT games - I dunno, they're untranslated. Majin Tensei 1/2 seems good (a turn-based strategy game just like Tactics Ogre but with demons (duh)).

All those kiddified spin-offs - they're basically a poor-man's SMT, so don't bother. Some of the translations are garbage, almost on par with Persona 1.

Oh, and the SMT anime sucks (the old one, Tokyo Destruction or something; haven't seen the new Persona anime).

Overall Atlus's MT franchise is VERY hit and miss. On one hand you've got such masterpieces as SMT 3 and DDS1 (although don't get me started on the sequel...), and on the other a two dozen of really mediocre titles with substandard gameplay.

They have to be commended for one thing, however, and that is they never fear experimenting with new gameplay systems and storylines/settings. Their stories are also darker and with a bit more realistic characters than the usual jRPG crap like the Tales games :X
Persona 1 was pretty bad, though it would have been better if the localization did not tear it to shreds.

Persona 2/2.5 are generally likeable games that have some rather obnoxious serious balance issues. As DE mentioned, the games can be a bit grindy, though the demon talk system is really easy to abuse.

Then again, if you know how to play the game, you will be using fusions to finish off every encounter. Never had to EXP grind in my second playthrough. Only had to spend a bit of time working up cards. It becomes way less grindy when you learn how to play the system.

Persona 3 is solid with some nice refinements from SMT: Nocturne (The best SMT game out there) added into the mix. It drops the demon talk system. This game is really good mechanically.

Persona 4 is a massive improvement over Persona 3. Better character design, better storytelling, more refined gameplay elements. The controllable party members help, too.
Damnit, I might have to get a PSP now. There's a few too many games for it that I'm interested in!

Wow, a port disguised as a remake.

Awesome.
