LEFT 4 DEAD: NOT YOUR STANDARD ZOMBIE GAME
Posts
I recently picked up a copy of "Left 4 Dead" at my local gamestop, thus being the second game I've bought for the Xbox 360 ever (because I've only lived in the same household with one for a couple of months)
It's a great game. Any fan of zombie-related games should end up liking this. But there's a twist that makes this game unlike any other zombie game I know of...
The zombies move extremely quickly! I.E., they run towards you rather than shamble. When I first started playing...boy did I get nervous when the first massive horde of zombies showed up. Oh yeah, there's that: at some points in the game, instead of encountering 6 or 7 zombies, you find yourself being ambushed by about 50 or 60 within a short moment. Yeah, I know...its f*cking crazy.
The other thing that makes this unlike other zombie games is the fact that you have a shitload of ammo, which can be replenished completely at a safehouse. Also, every character has a regular pistol, which has infinite ammo.
One final deviation from the norm is the fact that this game is made specifically for multiplayer. Of course you can play by yourself, but the computer will control the other three characters (but not like that's a bad thing, it controls them pretty well). Seriously, if this game was exactly the same, but you had to go it alone, you'd die on the first stage...and more than likely you would not be able to beat the first stage...ever.
But "Left 4 Dead" is an all-around good, FPS, zombie game. I you're a fan of FPS and/or zombies, I'm sure you'll find this game to be entertaining.

What's sad is that I've played both and the Nazi Zombies bonus mode of Call of Duty: World At War is a much better zombie co-op game than Left 4 Dead.

DIDN'T. >:(
The Nazi zombie mode sucks because it's basically holding out until you die. It has nothing on Left 4 Dead. Co-op on the game gets boring after a few rounds, but the Versus mode is so much better than any other zombie game. The game sucks as just a campaign or single player game, but playing with friends never gets old. Seriously if you can get 4-8 friends to play the game with you, it is one of the best experiences ever. It is the best multiplayer game next to things like Halo, TF2, and CoD 4. CoD 4 is better than CoD 5 at everything.

I personally have not played the VS mode yet. I am expecting it to be hella fun though.
This is the best zombie apocolypse game I've ever played. The multiplayer is amazing and the way it handles playing as zombies is pretty much perfect.
I really need to get it. Curse you lack of money! :(

I've got it for the PC version. Exactly the same as the console version except, of course, the controls, and then it connects to Steam instead of Xbox Live (duh). Personally I think the graphics definitely should've been a crapload better. I have played it on both the 360 and PC multiple hours and the graphics are just so toned down for both of the systems. It probably could have passed as a gamecube game, maybe even ps2 in terms of graphics. Definitely behind on that. The fun factor is insanely high though, but only if you have someone else. I have bad internet so I don't get to play with other people often at all, and Mitsuhide said that it's impossible to beat 1 player? I've beaten it multiple times 1 player, so who knows. I've gotten to the point where I can kill all of the mutated zombies without them touching me. That includes the Witch. It's always a feeling of awesome whenever I can shoot a hunter in midair.
The game is also glitchy because I can shoot and melee at the same time, or reload and melee at the same time. So it's actually kinda difficult to die (on any setting mind you)
So in the end, fun game, but not enough lasting appeal for the price I think. Needs a lot more levels, guns, probably the ability to carry iono.. more than one pipe bomb? Hehe, but molotov + automatic shotgun + tank + multiple headshots = dead tank. I literally hunt the tanks now. MMmmmmm.. good times.

The graphics certainly aren't the best, but they're definitely not PS2 quality. What settings do you have it on? On max, the game looks really good, though it's not Gears of War or anything like that. Source engine is a good engine as long as you're not making maps with it. It's starting to show its age, though.
I'm on fairly often so if you guys want to play with me (PC version of course), I'd be glad to. I'd destroy you if you're not on my team, but if you want to play against me and not with me that is cool.
The update is coming out in Spring, which brings in a whole new Survivor mode. That should be fun.

Got the 360 version. I found it to be a little on the short side, me and some friends getting through the whole game in just a couple of sittings, but still extremely tense and fun.
The multiplayer doesn't appeal to me too much as I feel the infected are awkward to control and use - maybe I'm just not well practiced enough to use them efficiently yet. It also seems that more experienced players have found a lot of areas where they can attain an unfair advantage and abuse the level design.
I've also played CoD's Nazi Zombies, and whilst it's zombies are more relaistic, it doesn't have that same urgency about it. It's very well done and fun to have a quick blast on but it's just doesn;t have the same feel or atmosphere about it. I can play Left 4 Dead for hours, but I can only go a couple of rounds on Nazi Zombies before getting bored.

I played the demo on Xbox Live the day it came out. Man was it ever fun.
I'll certainly be getting this game when I get my 360 back (which is taking forever).

I've got the PC version, do we have enough people for either side to start an RMN activity of playing this game? :)

Wow, you just wronggasmed all over the page.
Me and my brother have been playing Nazi zombies together at least two hours a day every day for two months now and neither of us have gotten bored of it. It is also the only shooting game that my brother has ever liked enough to actually play.
The game is just as addictive as fucking crack, and the better you get at, the more fun it is. By, say, Round 15 (very, very hard to get to unless you're one of those jerks who cheats/glitches) it basically IS Left 4 Dead as the zombies are just as fast, numerous, and have ridiculous power.
We have managed to get to Round 18 which is basically a miraculous feat; the world record is 24, set by the Treyarch team. I guess the main issue is that the shooting mechanics in CALL OF DUTY are just sooooo much better and the gunplay feels so much tighter and more realistic than any other shooter. Compared to the precision of CoD's gunplay, Left 4 Dead felt like fucking Goldeneye or Hitman or something.
Seriously guess we'll have to agree to disagree here.

Well actually, I absolutely love Call of Duty games. They are some of the most polished FPS games of all time. World at War is not that good though to me, mostly because I am sick of firing these 50 year old guns. But I still play CoD 4 because of how incredible it is.
I see how some would like it, but I don't think comparing the shooting mechanics between the two is very fair. You liked Fallout 3, and the gunplay in that game is obviously not that realistic or tight. This is not really a good comparison since that is just a single player game, but my point is that the games are still good despite being very different in terms of how you play them. Valve games are not your standard FPS games, they play very differently than most FPS games (not very realistic). Both take skill to get very good at, but you do have to approach them in entirely different ways.
I played through the campaign of World at War once and got the Nazi Zombies. I played it very few times after that, despite how good the game feels. The multiplayer is solid and Nazi Zombies probably is okay with a friend. And to be fair Left 4 Dead sucks without 3-4 friends, but it's execution on the whole subject is much better to me, especially with more friends since that is the only purpose of the game. The real downside to the game is the price tag, because it's really not worth $50 at this point.
I think we have different tastes. You are fun to debate with, though. =)
I actually don't like Valve games. I think they are really stupid and they feel cheap. The Half-Life series is particularly boring. It baffles me that Valve games are so expensive to make, because they aren't very tight. I don't understand why everyone likes them so much? I really have no interest in Left 4 Dead at all. The more people talk about it, the more stupid it seems.
I like Team Fortress 2 a lot, though. TF2 is really fun. I liked the original Team Fortress a lot, too (maybe more because it was even more un/intentionally lame and silly).
Sometimes I wonder if Valve gets so much credit because they have great community interaction and are really the last big old-school PC developer out there. It might not have much to do with the content of their games, but the state of the market!

...No, no, I'm pretty sure people like Valve games because they're good. You should at least TRY L4D before you bash it, and at least give reasons as to why you don't like.
Yeah it would be prudent to play it (with friends. I emphasize, with friends) before you formulate an opinion.

I guess this would be a valid complaint for Half life 1, but half life 2 is anything but shoddily built. Think of it what you like, but the source engine not only scales incredibly well, but it is also very well made.
If you haven't tried half life 2 because you hated 1 (I couldn't get through 1 personally.) I strongly, strongly, strongly recommend you at least give half life 2 a try. From the great story telling to the well written characters; valve has their reputation for a reason. It's nice to see a female character(s) who isn't a half naked leather clad ninja (Alyx Vance and so on).
I'd be shocked if anyone actually thought this about Half Life 2, I just found everything about the game to be brilliant; I especially loved how the game's story unfolded before your eyes without the need for gratuitous cut scenes, and the amount of attention given to every single aspect of the valve games (listening to developer commentary is actually interesting, informative and inspirational).
Anyway, as far as L4D goes I'm pretty obsessed. I play pick up games and with some random guys who have somehow appeared on my friends list. With a decent group (as with anything) it's a lot of fun. My only gripes would be the match making system.
...And for no reason here's a youtube clip.

I was playing Left 4 Dead again the other night on an Achievement run (got Akimbo Assassin, Stand Tall and Unbreakable in one go - easy 80G) and now I've really got an itch to get a decent group together for the Expert campaigns. If anyone ever wants to play me at anything on 360 BTW, my GamerTag's SamW89.
