Even if you have a passing interest in Half Life or indie filmmaking, you need to check this out. It's really, really good.

A Half-Life movie based on Gordon Freeman would suck. But this short film - the first in a series - is not about Gordon Freeman. And, what do you know, it doesn't suck, either.

Directed by The Purchase Brothers, Escape From City 17 was supposedly shot with "no money, no time, no crew, no script, the first two episodes were made from beginning to end on a budget of $500". So they did a few thousand bucks' worth of work for free, then, because for a fan movie, this is freakin' amazing.

This is fucking amazing.
Looks brilliant and it puts a lot of the Hollywood recreations of games to shame. I hope there's more parts coming out.
Having just finished up Half Life 2 a few days ago, and having made a short film as well, I have to say that I am extremely impressed. And for just $500? Those guys really knew what they were doing, and it shows.

It's amazing that fans of games, who happen to be, or want to be, Indie Filmmakers, consistently make content better than Hollywood. Not amazing in the sense that Hollywood, as a rule, can't make any movie which is based on any other form of media without somehow totally destroying it (the first Mortal Kombat movie not-withstanding). It's amazing in the sense that these fans, usually with a fraction of the budget that Hollywood has, is able to make something that works so well.

Goes to show you that the magic of the motion picture is less in what is happen behind the camera, and more about what is happening in front of it.
What I was most impressed with was how the live-action stuff felt very "computery", so that none of the game assets ever felt out of place. It was so unnaturally clear or something.

And using the original sound effects was a nice touch too.
Better than 99% of the live action projects I see in my program.

(Keeping in mind that the budgets for these film projects are often higher)
