Hello everyone this is my very first post on this forum, I have most recently become infatuated with making my own SNES 16 bit style rpg and I am overwhelmed by how vibrant and large the community is on this website.
I hope that I haven't overlooked an obvious help topic already on this board but I am curious if there is any particular version of RPGmaker software that is the best investment for someone who is just getting there feet wet?
Thanks all, I am very pleased to be here.

Coding is a great feature even if you don't want to learn Ruby. There are plenty of scripts out there made by other people for use in their game.
Plus there's the fact that RMVX is legitimate software.

Yeah, I'd have to recommend RMVX, too. It's just as easy to use as the earlier makers, with the added bonus of being flexible once you are proficient.
Thanks everyone for your generous replies. I have gone with RMVX and I do have a growing Java,Javascript, and PHP background already so I am excited about learning to script in ruby as well.
