Well hey there,
I'm Keith.
And as you can tell from the title, I am a composer looking to put together a team for an RPG project. Not just any project though- the final product is to be one of, if not the greatest freeware RPG games ever released. I want gamers who've never even heard of rpg maker to be playing this game.
Ambitious? You betcha.
My roommate will be collaborating with me creating the soundtrack. The music is influenced by a combination of hip hop and electronic music with orchestral techniques tied in (think persona 3). Therefore, the game's world should have technology comparable to our present time or have a futuristic setting.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/jj2g9w is the link where you can download a 5 song sampler of what we've been working on. Keep in mind these songs are all demos and the mixes are not finished.
Now I want this game to be great, but what makes a classic RPG game???
We can agree the factors include an unforgettable storyline (particularly one where the player grows attached to the world and characters), balanced and FUN gameplay, a soundtrack that appropriately conveys the current mood or atmosphere, and a consistent graphical style that draws (hahahah! pun) the player into the world.
Here's the problem with most RPG maker projects- it's one man trying to do it all. Examples include the music, animations, storyline, characters, and mapping. Screenshots are generally the first impression potential players take note of. If they see what looks like a messy deuce of mapping and awful character portraits, they probably won't even bother reading about its story description… no matter how phenomenal it may be.
No game maker is talented in all departments. So they borrow.
It's hard to get sucked into a game when the town theme is an already familiar song. “Oh wait that's an ff7 midi trackâ€. Talk about an instant reminder you're playing just another RPG maker game.
The same thing can be applied to graphics. How many times have you seen the same chest graphic in different games? How about two different games using the same main character sprite? All turn offs.
This game will feature a 100% original mp3 soundtrack, tilesets, and graphics. Anyone involved with the project will stick to what they're best at. Doing so will allow us to make progress at a much faster rate.
So….
Who am I looking for?
You're a great story/scenario writer? GET AT ME
You've got skills in graphic design? GET AT ME
You're a coding guru? GET AT ME
You're the hotdog eating contest champion of the neighborhood? That's awesome. Unfortunately, it won't benefit the project at this time. Sorry.
Have a skill (or know somebody who does) not mentioned that would help out with the development of the game? GET AT ME
Most importantly I'm looking for talented people who have free time to work on the game and are passionate about game making. The bar is set high so experience is required and you must be able to show an example of your work.
You can get in contact with me by sending an email to heyitskeith@hotmail.com or replying to this thread.
Again here is the link to the soundtrack sampler.

Feel free to leave feedback such as “that was awesomeâ€, or “yep. boner!†or “keith, this music sucks.†Note: Picking option 3 may get you shanked. Yea. eshanked.

You might put in a wee bit more info, such as what engine is planned for use. I might also add that from the different times a person has shown up, made a few posts, than made an advertisement for this great project idea they need team members for, you can hear crickets chirping in the topics.
Also, I'm a four time world Dr. Pepper drinking contest winner, would that be beneficial?

It is still undecided on which program will be used. Most likely vx or xp for the ruby scripting.
If you are currently sponsored and can supply a plentiful flow of DP consider yourself an honorary member.

Well, even though I won't be surprised if this topic goes nowhere, at least it is of greater quality than the rest of them.
I think the real problem is that of trust. No one here knows you, has any idea of how persistent you will be with the project, etc. What I am trying to get across is that no one wants to sign up with a team, only to get half way through and find out that the team has lost interest. However, if someone who frequents in this community (let's use brandon abley as an example) made a topic wanting to make the soundtrack for someone's game, most people would jump all over the offer.
I'm not trying to say that this is a worthless attempt by any means, and you may very well end up getting a team together. I am just saying that the odds of getting a team together are slim, let alone actually managing to get a game finished and released together.
(PS, I typed this without much thinking, so it might be random rambling)

I should mention a few things not included in the original post.
We are both currently enrolled at Berklee College of Music giving us access to 100's of musicians for any extra audio recording. In addition, I have a friend who will master the entire OST before the games release. We'll be creating the music using Reason 4.0 and Logic Pro 8- two professional digital audio sequencing programs.
That may be true, but our styles are very different from one another. My impression of Brandon's music, based off the two soundtracks I've checked out, is that it has a much more "traditional" sound while mine has more of a contemporary feel. Neither is better than the other, it all depends on what you're looking for.
Sure, I may be new to posting on this board- I'm not to rpg maker games. Heck, I used to be a Mod on Agetec's forums when they released rpg maker for the ps1. Yeah. THAT OLDSCHOOL.
Believe me when I say I'm 10,000% all for this project and have every intention to be there till the end.

Sounds like a nice rig you got there, Keith. What VST are you using, if any? Don't tell me you plan on using analog recording for everything! (If so, you should probably shoot higher than RMN.) I have EWQL Orchestra and will soon have Ministry of Rock, all using Cubase AI4. It's not Logic 8, but it does what I need it to do. Using a Yamaha KX8 controller with an M-Audio Midisport Ultra.

Hah no way man! 97% of everything will be done using digital samples taken from either Logic's or Reason's library. The only audio recording being done would be for either guitar or vocal parts. I don't use many VST plugins outside of what comes with Logic. Since Reason doesn't support plugins I occasionally rewire it to Logic, but that's only if I'm after a certain sound. Besides I've got about 25 gigs worth of refills so most the time it's not necessary. In case you were curious, the first 3 tracks were done in Reason and the last 2 in Logic.
My set up includes a MacBookPro(the sex) equipped with Logic, Digital Performer(though I never use it) , Drumcore, Reason, Recycle, and Finale. I'm hoping to have Pro Tools M-Powered within a few months.
Most mixing is done using my factory Ipod earbuds.... just playing. I use both KRK Monitors and Sennheiser studio phones. Pretty much everything is made with whichever midi controller is closest and and a M-Audio Trigger Finger for drum parts.
Gotta say Ministry of Rock definitely has some pretty convincing guitar samples.
