THE OSCARS ARE FUCKING BULLSHIT (EXCUSE MY FRENCH)

Never has it been more clear than this year what a stupid popularity contest it is. It makes me really angry all the poltiics involved.
Every single award had a remix of the same ten nominees, and more or less was won by one of the following five, in descending order:
Slumdog Millionaire (a good movie, but did it need to win absolutely EVERYTHING?)
Milk (ugh. subject matter = auto win, I guess. Indian and gays are hot this year.)
Doubt (STFU phillip seymour hoffman.)
The Reader (nazis apparently still = win)
Revolutionary Road (who even cares)
The Dark Knight (default, but also took home surprisingly few)
Truly ridiculous was the snubbing of really great movies (Does anyone remember "In Bruges"? Or "Burn After Reading"? Clearly not.) and the complete fucking ostracization of Clint Eastwood who made BOTH of the best movies of 2008, "Gran Torino" and "Changeling".
Now Slumdog is a fantastic picture, don't get me wrong, but...
Seriously, Clint did not even receive a nomination for best actor in Gran Torino, directing himself, at the age of 78, and delivering a truly fantastic performance. Instead, THAT GUY was nominated for some movie I've never heard of. Could the snubbing be any more clear cut and obvious?
How come Heath Ledger (mediocre actor, life tragically cut-short, great final performance) dying equals auto-win for best supporting but Clint Eastwood (legendary actor and unbelievably brilliant director, almost certainly going to die in the next decade, great self-directed final performance while directing two fantastic movies in one year at the age of 78) did not even receive a NOMINATION for Best Picture, Best Director, or Best Actor?
I mean, I can understand if unbelievably dumb liberal assholes think that because Gran Torino has a racist character in it, it is innately racist in spite of its ultimate message of tolerance and redemption, but what about fucking Changeling?
The fact of the matter is, Clint should have won all three of those categories, and he wasn't even nominated for any of them. Instead, Slumdog won everything.
Now again, none of this BS is really NEW but this is definitely the worst I have ever seen it.
It is a scary place we're at right now where I have more faith in the Misaos than the Oscars.

I'm glad I don't care about oscars and actors and what-not. I just like to watch movies, think it's either good or bad, maybe talk about it for a little while, possibly buy it when it comes out on DVD and watch it again, then put it away to watch it another time when I feel like it, then move on.
I actually quite agree regarding Gran Torino. Yes, his character was a raging racist. But that's the fucking point. He acted incredibly well, and the movie was brilliant. What, is creative direction going to be policed by hypersensitive liberal race cops now?
Not sure on the rest of that stuff. But they openly admitted to snubbing Gran Torino because of how racist the main character was. Heaven help this country.

I haven't seen Gran Torino, but I didn't like Changeling too much. I liked Slumdog Millionaire a lot, and was disappointed by Milk (because I expected a lot more out of Van Sant.) Honestly really, though, I hated a lot of '08's movies.
I didn't really care about anything except Mickey Rourke getting best actor, which didn't happen. *shrugs*

By the way, any award is completely invalid unless the body that administers it is composed of competent and thoroughly knowledgeable individuals. The Oscars do not fit this criteria. In fact, almost no well-known award is worthwhile.

I'm just glad WALL-E won best animated feature. It should have been up for Best Picture, though. WALL-E was amazing.

This is 100% correct.
In Bruges was actually pretty brilliant (sorry to get hoity toity here) but it is an easy movie not to like for pretty obvious reasons.
Is Torino really a 2009 release? I don't see how. If it is, that would make a lot of sense. But I'm pretty sure I saw it last year.

In the entire time of you being here, I've never seen you state anything as being more than mediocre.
Out of all the movies in the OP, I have seen The Dark Knight and Burn After Reading. The problem might be that those were, like, the only movies I have watched recently (along with High Anxiety), but Burn After Reading was really really really good.

Out of all the movies in the OP, I have seen The Dark Knight and Burn After Reading. The problem might be that those were, like, the only movies I have watched recently (along with High Anxiety), but Burn After Reading was really really really good.

It's kinda tricky... it received a teeny tiny limited release on Christmas, but was released everywhere sometime in January.

You want to explain this statement. I get that you disagree but you want to maybe make a case for why neither of those movies deserved to be nominated?

That is hardly any reason for Slumdog to win everything. The story was good, but the characters were so-so and the acting was nothing special. (Not that I think Slumdog shouldn't have won anything...)

Milk is hardly mind-blowing either, all of Van Sant's other stuff that I've seen surpasses Milk in every possible way. (Except for Oscar-winning.) If you paid attention to film though, then you should've heard of Milk...
