HOW DO SOME OF YOU COMPLETE GAMES SO FAST?

Weird! All of my games have at least 10 pages (in a .txt file), if not more. AND I usually have an excel document filled with MORE data.
I find that if I don't write something down when I think of it, it's gone forever.
Writing your ideas down is different than mapping out your entire game in a Word document and then following it to the letter once you get started. Pretty sure everybody writes things down.
This is 1 of 15 text documents I have for Hero's Realm. I also have a 16 worksheet Excel document.

Ah, Mephistocles, the Lord of Demons...

past within the Void of the World, separating his
Shadowlands and Shadowspawn from our world.
Balthalas, the Undead Mage.
\!He is a pompous fool, that one, though that does
not make him any less dangerous.
Balthalas fancies himself as being Mephistocles'
second-in-command, but it is unclear if this is
so.
Like all other demons, he was locked away behind
the Void of the World in ages past.
\!Which is fortunate for us, for his undead army
would ravage this world...
Murzhor, the charismatic manipulator.
\!This crafty and vile demon is a master of
deceit, illusion and magic.
\!He is brilliant, in his own evil way.
Though shrewed and conniving, he was no more able
to escape from the Void of the World than any
other demon.
The fierce demon Urok is a force in of himself.
\!Massively strong, and massive in size, this
goliath is truly frightening.
He leads the Demonlord's armies mercilessly
and with a cool conviction.
\!Despite his fierocity, he is utterly loyal to
Mephistocles.
Despite his might, Urok too was trapped within

xThe Tiny Medal in the Rover's Camp (or at least, the one in the pot in the Item Seller's home) doesn't actually give you a Tiny Medal.
xThere's no item animation when you get one of the seeds in the poisoned forest to the west of... the Chapter 2 starting town... whatever it's called. Yes, I'm being nitpicky, but those animations are cool.
xDefeating (at least) one of the ghosts in the mines sets the battle theme to the wrong music.

-Selecting any of the uber classes then hitting left/right plays the cancel sound and the character selection process continues, with the character that you were on when you were picking your class being the ???? Class.
-Hitting down to view the skills then hitting any direction key does the same thing (but it plays the selection sound instead of cancel), resulting in a ???? Class.
xYou can walk behind Stromholm (on the world map), appear behind the castle, then step down, move behind the towers, but onto the base of the castle. Minor graphical glitch? Yeah, but still :P

If you have enough inspiration and just start making your game without initial planning, it's quite fast to finish a project.
Te more planning, the more it takes. But as you have aready said, sometimes you end up not being able to put in practice what you have envisioned for the game, and stop doing it.
And zomg kentona, wish I could have so much ideas for my game D: I prefer planning the game based on chapters. After I finished planning and writing one chapter, I make it in the maker. What really suck balls is the initial programming necessary to implementent all the systems in the game. Once you do that, the rest is easy, imo

I've only created 1 actual game, Catalyst the beginnings, I plan on doing a complete remake with high res graphics, or better gfx at the same res.

God of War is a nice game, but its not an RPG. If i would make an action/arcade game i would make a more basic planning. But in a RPG with milions of stadistical and neverending history?

I've finished more games than I have available to download right now, but I lost nearly all of them except for Island Sky which I did have backed up. Then I will go to notepad or Word and write down the outline and any new things that may come up, as well as a list of things I have to do. It's not a big design document, I may give that a try sometime, but I do tend to keep multiple text documents (or word or excel or a combination of the 3) for them. I can generally tell what would be too much work for me, so I don't overplan and go ambitiously 2305923894082309 quests and 3290582390582390 areas or whatever.
I then start with the systems. I want to make sure the game is at least fun to play and that those work before I start going off and creating the game itself. There's been quite a few projects where after a lot of testing, I cancel it because the system wouldn't work for long term. The system making shouldn't take much more than a month, although that depends on a lot of things. Could take a few days if it's simple enough.
When that's done, then I start going about making the maps and the story. I do graphics as I go along, so in the meantime I use RTP or graphics I have lying around already. Music is also something I have placeholder music for until I get around to composing for it, but composing tends to be the last thing on my to do list generally.
I also don't like giving up on things that I want to see finish, so yeah, some things will require work that won't be fun, but I just get it over with and then go back to making the other things in the game. The beginning planning and the ending seem to be the most fun times for me.

Back when I first started, I was making about a game a year. PH1 took a little less than 12 months, then PH2 was 10 1/2. PH3 would've been the fastest done, but I got distracted by other stuff and didn't focus on it quite so much. PH4 is nowhere near finished, but it's hit a lot of roadblocks (the biggest of which has been my re-releases).

I have recently found that sitting down and mapping (not necessarily adding chests/NPCs/monsters/etc. to) a dungeon or town each day has made development progress quickly. Note that I'm working on a design that's more a wRPG than a traditional story game, so design and density is different from most RM* projects.
Also, I cannot comprehend how you people map. Ever since I started using RMVX's autotile-based mapping... oh man. It is wonderful.

XP and VX's mapping systems are totally different.
In VX, pretty much everything that would be in rm2k3's first/bottom layer is AUTOTILES. You know how you have to put the corners/edges on every wall in 2k3, or sometimes even the little tiny groove tiles in XP ceilings? Not in VX. =D Rectangle tool -> wall tile -> click/drag -> done!

I'd find it believable if someone suggested they were more inclined to work on RPG Maker games because they have less free time.

...I work on my games or draw or read or do homework or whatever in my free time. I am very rarely bored! If you are insinuating that using RM* is boring, then gtfo. /polite
What I mean to say is, if you're into amateur game development, you're going to really WANT to develop games, rather than "oooh I'm bored might as well RM *open up 2k3, has nothing to work with*"
