WORLDWIDE ECONOMIC SITUATION WORSENING, UNEMPLOYMENT RISING, DESPERATE MEASURES.

I'm no economist, but people just need to keep in mind that recessions are temporary. I believe this one is the result of bad decisions, and I believe we're handling it wrong - but we're not all going to starve to death. Just keep your head low and you'll be fine.
I don't want to get into the theory of the recession and it's causes, but it is definitely hitting home.

I'm about to graduate from the University of Denver with a degree in journalism, finishing up my tenure in the top 3% of the student body. That's not bragging or anything, just laying down a foundation. This is the time of the year where me and my fellow classmates are supposed to be getting interviews, supposed to be setting up careers. It's just not happening. There are no jobs to be had in the field. Hell, we just had the Rocky Mountain News go under. Technical writing would sound like a good alternative, but even those jobs are getting consolidated within companies, done by administrative assistants and the like. It's not just the journalism department either, but the whole college of liberal arts. Before anyone goes off and calls these useless majors to begin with, there have been a myriad of jobs for these people before.

I am actually scared. There's no light at the end of the tunnel and I'm stuck wondering about an uncertain future. Do I go to graduate school, wasting a lot more money, and try to wait it out? I don't think there's a solid choice either way. Times are bleak, and I can understand the situation, but that's not going to help me sleep any easier.
Just remember three things:
1) Do as you're told and don't be afraid to be flexible.
2) Is plastic OK?
3) Would you like fries with that?

Seriously, it's like the Great Depression's little cousin (The Little Depression?) may become a reality. We still have a little bit to go before we're worse than in 1982. As for print media, keep in mind EGM folded. How on God's green earth can the #1 videogaming magazine go under? Also, a key supplier of magazines known as Anderson News (no relation to Kentona) went under in February.

How can this affect the video gaming industry? E.T. for the Atari 2600 did release right about the time unemployment was highest in 1982 (10.8%, we're currently at 8.1% in the USA), hopefully we're not going to have another Video Game Crash.

Pull out a dollar and read what the top of it says. Federal Reserve Note, right? That basically means that your dollar is worth only about 2 cents in actuality, while in the past it used to say United States of America, (X number of dollars) in Gold Coin, and below that it would say Payable To The Bearer on Demand. What does this mean to you? Well, the government isn't going to give you any gold for your note. Or anything for that matter. It's practically worthless.

You misunderstand the notion of "value".

A federal reserve note, being legal tender used for pretty much everything, winds up representing a portion of the US economy. Obviously its value is not static, since the amount in circulation varies.

Gold is a solid commodity, but its value is no less artificial. All value is artificial and is only determined by what people are willing to pay for it, and for what reason. If you accept gold as payment for your job in order to trade it for other things, which are used to trade for other things (and get stored in banks, and everything else money is used for), that's no less artificial a use than, say, using paper to represent the economy abstractly. It's not as if you're using it for something practical.
The people who are saying this depression is no big deal I'm guessing aren't really that affected by it. I'm really curious how people are affected by it. I can get economic speculation on the front page of most newspapers/websites from economists, but I can't see how it is affected your everyday RPG maker user.
Since I live in Louisiana, I haven't really seen any negative things from this recession yet. Hope I don't.

Considering Louisiana hasn't even recovered from multiple hurricanes in 2005 and is still in reconstruction mode, I wouldn't be surprised.

How old are you, anyways? I didn't notice any of the recessions that have occured in my life until I got out on my own and had peers in the workforce.

I'm 20...but I don't act like it.

Personally, the recession hasn't affected me much. I just started a new job in December and had a few other offers I declined. I still get interest from other companies on a regular basis. While my 401k and such has taken a bloody beating, I have been enjoying the lower gas and consumable prices.

That said, a good number of my internet acquaintances have lost their jobs.

You mean the people who buy fixer-uppers, live in them for a while and fix them up, then sell them at profit? Because that doesn't strike me as particularly dishonest or unsavory.

Raises cost of living of neighborhoods to unreasonable levels. One of the primary causes for the housing industry's crash.

Gentrification is going to happen to any community pretty much inevitably as a byproduct of the modern lifestyle. At some point it's going to be one big city stretching from coast to coast, with vertical farms providing our food and electricity being beamed down to us from solar power plants in points of perpetual sunlight on the moon.

Also, the singularity.

Do not compare standard inflation to cost of living increases due to house flipping.

It's just not the same.

No, I don't mean those.

I'm not talking about standard inflation, I'm talking about gentrification. It is what happens when artists and homosexuals move in to ghettos because they can't afford rich people houses, then make the area into a place that rich people would like to live and can no longer afford to live there themselves once the rich people move in.

I have been spending money frivilously in an attempt to stimulate the economy. It's okay guys, I got it from here.
Over here in the Great Country of Texas, that there little Recession Polecat don't bug us too much. We just get Muriel and Eustace to set out a couple of them Recession Traps, which is one of them there Obama Stimulus Packages in a noose, and when the little rascal gets caught....well...we eat real good that night.

Um, yeah. Anyway, the Recession is effecting Texas as well, even though the cities with Refineries, like Beaumont and Houston, are feeling it less than cities like Dallas or Austin. The major way we feel it is that a lot of business are suddenly selling everything at 50% off or more, which is making everyone buy more than they usually do. For us in Houston, I'm not sure that people are aware that we're in a Recession yet. Movie Ticket sales, Restaurant Businesses, and Bar tabs are as high as ever, if not higher. One friend of mine takes his family out to eat FIVE times a week.

Personally, I'm going out less, but I'm still buying stuff, taking advantage of the Recession to buy new things for my house, or wife, and take trips that we normally wouldn't take. I'm still somewhat frugal though, just in case this great job I have goes away. In a way, I'm glad my wife and I decided not to have any children at this time...that is one expense I don't wish to deal with!
Us folks down where I live ain't been bugged by that there Recession either. I guess it might possibly just be me though, excluding that roughly $40,000 I lost as well as the lowered value of the dollar. Also, on an interesting note, bank robberies are up in my area, three in just this week.
