LOVE FOR THE TALES SERIES
Posts
Yeah. Well, I won't deny that at first I really didn't get it when it comes to the Tales of series (tales of phantasia, legendia, abyss, symphonia, etc)... and I kinda can tell why some people don't like them. However, the Tales series can be appreciated if you really observe it in development terms, and even under your gaming points of view. The only thing that I have against the series are that the dialogue in some of the games aren't as great or satisfying, or that's mostly cause some of it is teenager/child style ...
Anyways, I have gotten really impressed at the originality of Tales of Legendia, in overall terms... the music, graphics, even gameplay style, is slightly different... It will be great to see games more original, even if they aren't as appealing to the general public, like that one part in specific. Anyways, after a while of kinda objecting against the series, I now like them, and can learn to love them in the end...
I also am a fan of the sprites from tales of the world, and I, before I could sprite from scratch, I observed them a lot, as they have been of great inspiration to me... so what about you? share your views on the tales series, and please don't flame the series.

I don't really mind the series. I can find them fun to play at times, but some of the storylines in most of them aren't really that original (Tales of Phantasia).
Though, the graphics and music are always a plus. They're always great and refreshing.
Though, overall I don't mind them, but I'm not a big fan of them either.

Tales of Vesperia has recently become one of my favorite games of all time. Honestly, I'm not sure where it ranks against Terranigma and Legend of Mana, but it's neck and neck for all three. Anyone who likes jRPGs and owns a 360 is doing themselves a disservice if they haven't bought Vesperia yet. Great lead character (and the supporting cast isn't bad, either), fun battles, and so much to see and do.
Generally I'm not as big a fan of the series. I loved Tales of Eternia and thought Symphonia was all right, but none of the others so far have really grabbed me.
I really wish more of the 2D entries would make it over here. I love beautiful, high-res sprites, and we never seem to get the Tales games that use them.

Someone was actually talking to me about Tales of Vesperia, in fact recommending it to me but I don't own a 360 unfourtunately... although if I ever get one, I'll deffinitely get this, of course, after star ocean. :)
I have only played Symphonia and Vesperia. They're both amazing games.
The only big problem I have with Vesperia is how well-hidden the sidequests are. You pretty much need to keep this beside you as you're playing if you don't want it to be incredibly linear.

I enjoyed Abyss, except for all the annoying and boring parts (half the game). The other half was pretty good, though!
The only ones I've beaten are Destiny and Symphonia. The latter was pretty good (albeit cliche, but this is a cliche Japanese RPG series we're talking about here), and the former was about the same. The only difference with Destiny was that I never switched the members in my party and think I messed up the game. At the end all of the characters met up together and half of them I'd only seen, like, once, yet they talked as if they'd been with Stahn the whole game and what an arduous journey that was etc.
My brother has Vesperia and I'm thinking about getting Abyss and Legendia. Dunno, though. I've got enough games to beat already.

IMO, Tales of Vesperia is a great game and is far and away the best Tales game they've made; in fact, I don't think Namco is capable of making a better Tales game. Not because it's not possible, but because we're talking about Namco. Take Tales of Symphonia 2. ToV's protagonist, Yuri, is one of the best protagonists in a jRPG ever; Emil in ToS2 might be one of the worst.
I would dare say that, Abyss aside, Vesperia has made every other Tales game before it obsolete.

I liked Phantasia lot, don't really care enough to play any of the others. I even made several working versions of its battle system in RPGMaker.
I have not liked any Tales game I have played.
However, iish assures me that Vesperia is fantastic so I will probably check it out in the future.

I really like Phantasia because, well, it is a Snes game and that makes it good. The graphics and soundtrack are very nice, some locations like Ymir Lake and Freezekill are very good. I also really appreciate the technological advancements made in it. For a simplistic RPG story, it is pretty decent with Dhaos and everything. All the different sidequests you can do are fun, and the skill/battle system are also nice. The only other Tales games I have played are Destiny, which honestly is not very good, but I am kind of nostalgic about it because I played it in 2003 and I am nostalgic about everything I did in 2003, and Eternia, which is incredibly terrible.
Can someone tell me the main difference between them?
It seems like if you've played one of them, you've played them all. The only thing that changes is the character and story. I don't mind games using the same formula, but when you use it 12 times it kinda loses its spark. I've only played Abyss, Phantasia, and the Vesperia demo. The only one I really enjoyed was Phantasia, and that was almost 10 years ago when I played it. From what I've played of Abyss and Vesperia, they play the exact same way, just with different characters and a new story.
I guess if you like the formula then you will like the series. There is a lot of pointless dungeons and tasks to do in the ones I've played, especially Abyss. I couldn't stand the dungeons in that game. Seriously, I was hoping the dungeons would get better in that game but nope, they don't.

A lot of the Tales love really comes into whether you can enjoy the combat or not, since regardless of which game that's what it really comes down to.
The stories are actually some of the best in RPGs as far as I'm concerned, and the characterization and voice acting in the last few of them has been fantastic compared to other RPGs (and other voice acted games in general...)
Skits are pure genius and something I'm working into one of my own projects (super easy way for lots of extra character development that isn't required).
I know the highly anime-feel can turn off a lot of players, but the battle system just gets more and more deep as you get into it (much like a fighting game with learning how to chain together artes so you can juggle opponents or reduce your own open time between combos or even create infinite combos) so it can be a dull series if you don't enjoy that.
Each new iteration adds new features that really change how the combat works; Abyss added free-move and had it's Field of Fonons bit (awesome when you learned to use it) and Vesperia has added Finishing Strikes, which are the greatest thing ever.
My only complaint about Tales of games are:
1. Sometimes less required fighting would be nice
2. Less dull dungeons and puzzles (the solutions are usually simple and the dungeons longer than necessary)
3. Some extra systems are less useful than they could be (see: Cooking, the PSP Tales of the World does cooking right, along with crafting!)

The basic formula stays (combat, etc) but they usually add extra stuff to it... so in some games there is some sort of difference... not vast, but to an extent that feels kinda new.
In abyss, I liked the dungeons, mostly cause of the graphics, and the structure of them... puzzles were fine in my opinion (better easier than too hard), and well the battle system had more options, you could run anywhere if you unlocked that early feature that you press L2 (I think, can't remember, been a while).
I prefer open-map Abyss battles over those from earlier Tales games that I've tried. It's a really cool way to go about battles!

Yeah, me too. In Tales of Legendia it was kinda retarded, cause aside from the random battles there was this water bubble that if you step in you fight some stronger enemies. I mean, it was original, but it didn't look too appealing to me. I hate random battles for the most part though... that's why I don't even do that in my rpgmaker games.
I've only completed Vesperia, Symphonia, and Legendia, and they are some of the best games I've played, ever. I already beat ToS 3 times I think and I'm gonna go for a second with ToV soon.
Tales of Legendia is also IMO the best tales game ever, it easily excels over all the others, with much better music, art, environments, and nearly everything else. The only detrimental fact was that it was really short and kind of easy. I beat in one weekend without dying once. (I had it rented, so I had to finish it.)

I am a walking mass of Tales fangirlism. No, seriously, ask Asa. I adore the series.
I have played Symphonia, Abyss, Destiny, Legendia, Tempest, Phantasia, Destiny 2, Eternia, Tales of the World 3, and Radiant Mythology. As far as graphics go, I'm usually content with them - 2D wise, Eternia is beautiful and in its 3D Tempest is extremely ugly and the rest range somewhere in between. Musically, they're about average, even though Symphonia's music has always stuck with me as a personal favorite. But these are jusy asthetics, and aren't my driving reasons for my extreme fandom.
I have enjoyed the stories of each game I've dived into, except Legendia and Tempest. Some of my favorite characters of all time are from Tales. I have been moved to tears by plot points in most of the games, and felt emotionally attached to characters to characters by the end of the games... Symphonia and Abyss in particular. I remember hating Natalia so much, but by the end, she had grown on me.
I want to play Vesperia so bad though, and I wish Rebirth (CLAAAAAAAAAAIRE!) would get a translation, though that won\t stop me from playing it - I have played most of Tempest with little difficulty understanding the plot... made dialouge harder to enjoy...

Just Symphonia, and I did complete it (I'm on a second play through on and off). I didn't even know there was a "Tales Of" series until about a year ago. Symphonia is the only tales game I've ever seen in shops!
I did enjoy it and I think Vesperia is coming out over here soon. I'll most likely get it.
