So, like, I recently started my second playthrough of Dragon Quest VIII, and this time I am studying and generally loving the NUMBERS in the game. They are are so numbery and perfect and UGH I love it.

Like... the numbers all work together. The NUMBERS.

How do you feel about NUMBERS in commercial videogames? Do you agonize over your character's statistical attributes, or do you just hit Optimize button?

Feel free to talk about any NuMbErS--stats, damage output, the amount of levels in a dungeon...

I, myself, have never used the optimize option in an RPG before. I love numbers. :-*
Oh, I agonize like the dickens.

I NEVER select "auto-level-up" in RPGs. I live for customization, stat min/maxing, weapon/equipment crafting and optimization in general. I spent hours trying to get great rolls in the character creation process of Baldur's Gate, for example. I like KOTOR II over KOTOR I simply because the workbench is so greatly expanded and customizable. Dragon Warrior III is one of my all time favorite RPGs because you get to create your own party. I hoard runes and gems in Diablo II. I could go on...
I tend to hit the Optimize button and then use that as a suggestion for personal optimization. For example, I've been playing a lot of Football Manager again over the last couple of weeks and there I tend to let the assistant coaches makes the first decision on what players to field but I always tend to tweak them around a bit since I have some players that have done well in the past and stuff like that.

Of course that game has a lot of numbers but I tend to just skim over them, focusing a couple of things to see what "feel" I get overall.

Of course that's large-scale optimization when there's too many factors for my puny brain to make out (I will take a city advisor's advice under consideration in Civ-type games too, even though I still manage it myself I find the advisor to be useful in... advising.). In smaller scale (Let's say a cRPG or a tabletop game adaption) games where I know exactly what every number does I'm all over customizing it personally. Of course agonizing over where to put that extra Skill Point. (And generally not spending those "optional superpoints" until I "need them" (which is never). Example: I will hold on to a Potion of +1Strength for the entire game, never knowing when to use it)

I don't think that anybody uses elixers or scrolls or... any items, really. Potions of +1Strength are ignored forever!

I love numbers so, so much. Most of my recent games could be read as my love notes to numbers, whereas my older ones were all about setting and story.

Also I try and force myself to use discardable items before the game/sections of the game ends. It is a struggle for me but I am gettng better at it.

Two of my all-time favorite games for their use of numbers (it doesn't hurt they are both fantastically great games overall) are Final Fantasy Tactics, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Depends. Is it a permenant or temporary upgrade? I use permenants all the time (exception: DW4 since I'm saving them for the main hero). Item buffs I usually don't get around to using since I forget they exist/bosses die first (use them on regular enemies? pah what a waste)

I am terrible with Elixers and the like though because I never use them (although when I beat FF4 I was glad I did because I was using them every other turn)
I wrote an essay about numbers once.
