PLATFORMING

In RM2k3 is it possible to make a decent platforming section or are you stuck with, "the character jumps this many spaces, if you don't like it deal with it."
I'm looking for a way to make it so that you can actually control the character in the air, you know moving him left, right, or even attacking.

Control in the air? No.

He lies. It's possible.
It is quite possible. There is platforming control in the air in this game.

Have a nice decade trying to figure out how to do it in a not easily expandable engine made for creating RPGs!

(Here's a hint, you need to use variables and pictures to make pixel based movement.)

It's not that hard, -_-.
Sh! You're messing up the reverse psychology.

I would think that making a decent platformer in rm2k3 would take quite a bit of time though.

*ahem* I didn't say making a decent platformer was easy. I'm saying all of this:

is easy.

quite a difference, heh.
Just use Gamemaker.

Platformers in that are capable of not sucking complete ass.
OK since its been determined that it is possible to do, the next question is how do you do it? Is there a (relatively) simple way to do it, or is it one of those horribly complex things that's just plain not worth doing?

These are my thoughts on the matter. Then again, I like RPGs...

Use C++
GTFO

If you are looking into serious platformer development as opposed to a small tech demo, I would suggest another engine better suited.

(I don't mean to use what I did. Just something else not RM.)
OK maybe I should clarify, I'm not looking for a platforming game per se. I'm just looking to make an RPG game with platforming elements, like the NES Castlevania games type platforming. The picture in the GameOverGames Productions post and the video from the Blitzen post are more what I'm looking for. So no I'm trying to make some epic Super Mario or Metroid platformer.

On a random note what game is that picture from? It looks pretty good.
Before you decide on an engine to make such a game in, you should consider what will have more precedence in a game and what will be more difficult and time consuming to develop, the RPG elements or the platforming elements.

Basically is it going to be more of a combat platformer with RPG elements like a strength stat for damage calculation mixed in, or is it going to be completely focused on complex formulas and numbers and magicks with the 2D platforming just being the way you get around the world?

I would really suggest using something different than rm2k3 because any sort of platformer element in it will probably be buggy and laggy, as well as a pain to create.
well i don't know shit about RPGs except pokemans

Metroid and Castlevania are essentially the same genre, Metroid just doesn't have as much numbers. With Gamemaker or any other program they mentioned you can still make it an RPG-Action game.

The game is Starless Umbra and it can be downloaded on this site. (I don't have a link.) However, the game is locked into a single .exe and thus you cannot open it to see how it works. Also, it does not work on some computers. (Mine)

Actually, I have a real simple example I created a while ago that was inspired by an RPG (phantasia). http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/916/ It has jumping that may work for you, it shouldn't be too hard to adapt to an RPG as long as it's not full out platformer and you just use the jumping function. Poking around in it a little may yield results.
