Yes. Paypal would be the easiest way to raise money and to pay out.
I can go ahead and make another one of these if you want, Mog, but not having a Paypal account makes it somewhat impractical to come up with any substantial prize or whatever. (Would someone else be willing to serve as a middle-man of sorts, or?)
A Paypal account is incredibly easy to make and free. You should make one unless you absolutely cannot.
I agree that a cash prize would generate popularity among the participants, but most people couldn't really care less if there was a reward or not.

I agree with you nickad but obviously with a cash prize more people would be more inclined to. So are we going to start this like I thought with a kind of test run to see the interest or wait for a cash prize to build up?
If you ask me, ain't shit gonna happen unless we get some people to at least state they're willing to pool in some cash.

That's why I think we should just do one with no prize to see how many people would actually be willing to participate before bringing in a cash prize. Dependng on how popular the contest is I'm sure implying people should put in for a cash prize for the next one would work better.
I'm not willing to put in cash, even if it is just $15. Besides, I deal in £.

I think Tau's idea is the best. Four people including myself have already stated they're not interested in a prize. I think we have enough people to give this a go. I don't think it should have to be about money anyway, knowing your map is better than all the rest and rubbing it in their faces is reward enough, at least at first.
Those who are in it for money do not have the will power or determination to win the competition...

Also let people map whatever they want. Allow more freedom this time by not having restrictions due to a theme or set boundaries. People can work with whatever they're good at, and we can all have fun. =)
Well, money or no money, that's fine with me. I'd really rather have some kind of prize, though.

While I see what you're saying, I'd like this contest to have a pretty big community scope. With all due respect to you guys, I don't think four people are enough to make it definitive one way or the other.

You know Paypal transfers currency, right? I think if everyone chipped in at least 5 bucks, we'd have a pretty nice sum of cash on our hands.

Of course, me too. I simply meant there are four people who don't care about the prize money. I'm sure, prize or no prize we'll have more people than that. Having said that, We do have Map Design topics purely for fun, no prizes or judging. It's a total flop everytime =/

I'm just trying to think of an alternative prize.

Definitely!

Contests and competitions need rules and boundaries and structure, though, otherwise it's just a free-for-all (and not really a contest) - there isn't really a base for objective judgment. I'm fine with vague goals like "Make the prettiest map" or "Make a puzzle" but you still need some sort of goal for the contest.

I think we should just worry about the reward next time around and start this thing already.. Although we still need a theme and are we jus using Xenos guidelines or our own variation on them?

I suggest a scifi theme as it's never really been done for a mapping contest such as this.

Yeah I know, I'm not talking about eliminating rules completely.

Past contests were generally bad and got bad reception due to certain themes and limitations (see the old map threads here). A theme is okay as long as it doesn't interfere with the graphics or outcome of the map, IMO. For example, having a forest theme or limiting it to certain tiles that you have to use limits what a user can create. I really didn't like the last contest that was here where we had to use that hideous forest tileset. There wasn't much fun in making something that is already compiled for you, plus it wasn't everybody's cup of tea.

I think sci-fi is cool since it allows lots of freedom and doesn't truly alienate people. I'd just go with Tau's suggestion. He sounds anxious to get started on the classic map making contest.
I like the Sci-Fi idea as well. It's fresh...especially these days.

Sounds good to me. We can hopefully get this started within the week, if everyone is okay with the idea!

Sci-fi? I guess that's all the VX users out then? :D

Sci-Fi doesn't mean you have to set it in Space. You could set it on a foreign planet for example, do whatever. As long as you're creative you can fit a Sci-Fi theme in easily.
I thought some would be confused about sci-fi. Here is what it basically is (wikipedia).

-A setting in the future, in alternative time lines, or in a historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archeological record
-A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens
-Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature

Essentially, other genres can be used in the realm of sci-fi. For example, Steampunk and magic from fantasy games are considered sci-fi, but you just have to have an explanation for the latter as to how that magic can occur. Make some crap up, basically.

I need an excuse to open Rpgmaker again.
