Before you completely go off of RM2K/RM2k3 in favor of the more recent versions, I'd suggest you check out one of the better games created using it: the Flashbulb Madness.

It, in my opinion, shows the true potential of RM2K. One of my rather influential inspirations.
This guy is a pretty brilliant racketeer but he is still basically a racketeer.

Way I see it is, at least he isn't forcing you to pay for it. That would truly be racketeering. All he's doing is asking for a donation if you liked the game, which if you thought his game was cool/worth it you would pay. Otherwise, you wouldn't. Simple as that. >.>
My issue is with him (and indy for that matter, the creator of Laxius Power) presenting his game as outside the continuum of RPG Maker games, as something unique and different rather than one part of a larger phenomenon. So it's not him asking for money I have a problem with, just asking for money in this context.
