So I got Chrono Trigger for the DS for Christmas this year. I am trying to play it whenever I can because I know it is one of the greatest and most respected RPGs of all time and I never played it when it first came out. So I've been actively trying to play it...and I've gotten as far as the part where you get the robot. Which, I imagine, isn't very far.

Clearly, I just can't get into it...

Now I know 40-90% of this is the platform. If there has ever been someone who was NOT a portable gamer, it's me. I think the only game I've completed on a portable platform in my adult life was the new mario game for the DS, and that's becase 1) I am the biggest fan of the old side-scrolling mario games ever and 2) that game was divided into delicious, simple-to-play bite-sized chunks.

Any non-twitch gaming on a portable platform just seems wrong to me. So, it's like somewhere between 40-90% just the fact it's on DS...

but the other 10-60%? Well, it just feels to me like a mediocre RPG Maker game, because I've seen almost all of the graphics before, in games that have stolen them. And I've seen much, much BETTER and more fun battle mechanics in any number of RPG Maker games (also the total lack of customization is a turn off. all you do is find better weapons and learn preset skills. combos are kind of neat, I guess, but where's the player choice?).

I feel like I SHOULD be enjoying this...it is one of the most critically acclaimed console RPGs ever...but playing it feels like a chore.

Is there some point where the game picks up or something?

Somebody, halp!
I think part of it is that you're missing the point that it's an SNES game and it can't really be expected to have a boatload of customization.

Also, the plot (which is still being heavily debated and discussed to this day and has an entire extremely large community (Chrono Compendium) around it) and the time traveling elements are awesome.
I always thought the battle system was fun for it's satisfying "feel good" moments. And the story is always interesting mainly because you're always switching between completely different places.

But yeah it's really an average but solid RPG especially if you're an WRPG player.

Once you get more characters, you start building combos based on your favorites... that's customization, kind of.

To be honest, I think Shadow Hearts 2 does the battle system better (line-based skills). CT is a fun game, though, and you should give it more of a chance. The stories (!) are pretty interesting, and the player does influence what happens.
Hey, I like getting better weapons... :<

The battle system was innovative at the time, and the battles are still fun (because the enemy design is pretty damn good). More combos possibilities open up as you learn more of your preset skills, so like Craze said it's kind of like customization. I think the game starts to take off just after the first 2400AD quests, too.

Incidentally, CT is the only DS game I've finished. New Super Mario Bros bored me and I quit about halfway through.

Customization is over rated. I would prefer a game that actually knows how to pace gameplay and story over a mess of customization.
It may take a while to get into the feel of it and let yourself into the game...but it's worth it in the long run.

Avoid Chrono Cross, though. 7 years later and all things Chrono Cross still pisses me off.
Without the nostalgia factor, CTDS becomes just another ordinary RPG game on the DS according to many CT fans. That's why I'm not sure whether to get this or not.

Yeah, this is a point too.
Because Chrono Trigger is 14 years old, with unimpressive dialogue and a mediocre story when you compare it to current games. People mostly enjoy it for the nostalgia, so if this is your first time playing it, there is a much much higher chance that you've seen all of this before. When it first came out it was impressive. Not so much now.

I can't even get through the game anymore, even with the nostalgia factor. The music never gets old, though.
Truthfully, I still think Chrono Trigger kicks the asses of most of the crappy "new-age" games that get released these days.

Seconded. Most RPGs these days are graphic showcases with needlessly convoluted stories and emo boy-toy characters.
blasphemy.

CT is the game that more or less got me into any RPGs at all.

I agree with this as well.

Though, I myself, have currently stopped playing, mainly because the game is old and I've already played it before. So to me, CT was unable to stand the test of time; ironic, isn't it.
Out of curiosity, where are you? I personally find playing with the terrible trio a pain until you get some more interesting characters.

Suggestion: Play up until THE BIG FIGHT (you'll know it when you get to it) it's just about the defining moment of the game. If you still don't like the game after it you certainly gave it a huge chance and got to see some of the best it has. It is a ways in though (random estimate: 10 hours)

Also if you do stick with it don't go anywhere near the Lost Sanctum or Dimensional Vortex unless you want to see the game as if it was designed as "Baby's First RPG Maker Game"
Chrono Trigger is a great light-hearted fun game. It shouldn't be over-thought, it should be about "woo! I'm traveling through time to save the world!" I also agree with the people who think customization is overrated. Although I never realized it was a selling point. I actually dislike it. I like my characters to be distinct and preset.

I do find the future to be the most boring time, especially the factory though. It's still fun, but compared to 600 and 12,000, it really pales to me.

Yeah, this tends to hurt the games I play too. It's harder for me after a lot of amateur games :).

I had the most fun playing through the game in 600 AD and 12,000 BC, and I had a blast playing all of the optional quests at the end of the game. But yes, for me there were stretches of less-fun gaming- the future, prehistory, and the part of 12,000BC when you're going up a mountain :).
