WHAT CAN I USE TO MAKE CHIPTUNES?

I was wondering, if there is a program out there (preferably free, but I may pay for one if I want it that badly) that I can use to make chiptunes?

Like NES style music; Megaman, Zelda, and whatnot?

Do you guys know of any and where I can download them?
Well, I know of one you can use to convert Midis in to Chiptunes, but I don't know about making 'em from scratch. If it's the former, then the program is called "GXSCC," and you should be able to find it if you search Google. I'd give a website, but I followed a link from youtube and lost the link.

But if it's the later your looking for, then I don't think I'll be able to help.

Oh. nevermind, here's the link.

Converts them to .WAV files though, so they'll be pretty big. =|
LOL this is the best program EVER. You can set the settings to make it output in a lower frequency to reduce filesize, set it to NES intsruments, and it makes all the midis you put through it sound totally awesome! I don't know if you can limit it to four instruments, but find four-instrument midis and you're basically set for chiptune extravaganza. I compared a midi I had found of an NES game song with the song from the game through an emulator, and the similarity was eerie!

Good find!
oh god I am having so much fun with this.
This program is like TV Tropes. Once you go there, you're stuck for an hour and a half. That being said, it is very awesome.
Half an hour of that time is going to be spent listening to a glorious chiptune version of X Japan's excellent Art of Life.

i am that hardcore
i know, right? 8) im downloading all my favourite songs in midi form so I can chiptune them.
Quite right! I was there for about an hour or two just listening to music when I first found it. p_o
Yes I'll agree. This programs is quite nice.

Since I can't find a program to make them with, I'll probably just use midi maker to make the songs I need and then convert them!
Famitracker is supposedly the BEST option for making NES music. I've never personally tried it though. I use a VSTi that outputs square, triangle, noise, and pulse. You can find that here.

EDIT: That program is pretty neat, but I prefer to be able to choose what sound is being emulated, and tweak options myself, etc.
Do you need an actually instrument to use those, cause I'm looking for one where the program is stand alone.
yeah trackers are basically your best option if you want something standalone, although with GXSCC it's simply a case of composing the MIDI in a different program and simply importing it. not to mention that trackers are pretty daunting to a first time user in my experience.
For the VSTi, you will need some form of recording software. The demo of Fruity loops would work fine, it's just you won't be able to save the fruity loops save file (you can still export to midi, mp3, etc, just can't save for future work). Thus, you should get fruity loops, make your midi in whatever program you are using to make midis right now, and then import the midi to fruity loops and overlay it with the VSTi.
I did some experimenting. I made some songs with midi maker, converted them, and didn't like the results.

I shooting for something that sounds like this

But I just can't get it right.
Haven't heard of FamiTracker before, but it looks like it provides what you need. I use Schism Tracker myself, but there's a learning curve attached to it. I'm sure most programs will have a learning curve.
Did you use that VSTi I provided Mitsuhide?
