I'm new to the RPG Maker community, so I have a few questions regarding how things should be done.

I'm under the impression that using the RTP sets isn't very attractive since EVERYONE can use them (no originality), which is no problem as I can draw, but really don't want to. My hobbies are story telling and programming, and while I can draw, I'd prefer not to. So what is the proper steps for getting character sets and chip sets made?

Also, regarding character sets, what is the deal with nudity? I don't plan on having anything above PG, but I have an idea that would use a character set that has a "mannequin" type female character that would mostly be covered by a partially transparent waterfall. Nothing nude would be seen, but the concept (and silliness) would be there.

Same goes for MIDI's...although I have some from .hack and Xenogears, are they legitimate to put in my game since it will be distributed (not sold, just shared). Again, I can play the piano, and somewhat know music, but have NO experience for making MIDI's.

Lastly, what about time? I have all these ideas in my head, which just need to be put down on paper (or into RM2k3), but I just lack the above mentioned recourses. To be honest, if I had a magic Zip file with all the graphics and music I needed, I could have a game out within a few weeks. (That's not because it's a short game, but because my game will be using an object oriented programming style). So, what is the about normal time to get a game done, including making or DL'ing tile sets and music?

(although my last paragraph said "Lastly", I may have other questions later... :P

Personally, I have no problem with the use of RTP. I prefer them WAY more than ripped graphics. There is a tendency to complain if graphics are very generic, though.

RPG Maker was made to give people with minimal graphic, music and programming talent a chance to make their own game. The problem just is that it's hard to make your game stand out if it looks just like everything else. And most RPG Maker games are rubbish.

If you have an interesting idea, however, and can pitch it well, you can probably compensate for the generic graphics. Using RTP graphics won't condemn your game to the rubbish pile, since a lot of the best games have used the RTP and heavily abused 'Mac and Blue' resources. Pretty graphics are a great way to attract players, though.

I have no idea what you are talking about with this nudity tangent.

I have a massive library of midis and VGmusic.com is right around. The community abuses midis sequenced after commercial game music all the time. But again, making your own is likely to net you more respect for your effort.

I don't think there is any average time frame that a game is completed in. It depends on how ambitious you are with your project, how committed you are, and how fleshed out your idea is.

My game 'Corporal Buggy Bear' was supposed to take me a week to make. I spent six months on it. Game making isn't easy even with RPG Maker. Finishing a project takes diligence and a love for your project.
Eh, the nudity isn't a tangent, just a question. I guess better wording would have been "what is the etiquette for nudity?" That is my idea, is that an acceptable concept?

As for my love for my projects, I LOVE creating in the game...I HATE drawing out the tile sets. I guess that's kind of why I brought most of this up. If I can get around the drawing and midi making, I'd be so much more into my game.
People have gotten away with nudity in RPG Maker games before, (Laxius Power seemed to start a fanbase on that) but I think it's mainly a matter of being tasteful. And being clear about any objectionable content. A silhouette of the female form behind a waterfall is something CARTOONS tend to get away with, so I don't expect major trouble for you.
I don't really think it would matter about the age limit for an rpg game so long as it has limits and follows some sort of conduct. It is used a lot in Anime but even that has boundaries.
Heya Melch, let me answer these in sequence with my opinions:

1. RTP has become more popular lately with folks trying to communicate the message that a solid game can be made without "custom grfx lol." If your other elements of the game are very good, then you should get plenty of attention, but custom graphics can get a lot more attention- although that might end up creating too much pressure on you and ruining the experience of making the game.

With all that said, I would probably recommend that you either go all RTP or try to gather some resources outside of RTP. I really enjoy using the Charas.ex website for generating sprites, which allows you to combine parts of old, commonly-seen sprites to create sprites that appear to be new.

2. Nudity... my personal opinion, which I think a lot of others share, is that nudity hasn't ever really been conveyed well with amateur games made with SNES-era graphics. Your description of what the nude scene would actually be sounds fine though, like you're doing it more for a joke. Then again, maybe you should disregard my advice- a lot of folks seem to enjoy seeing nudity in games. Ehh.

3. You can very most likely get away with using MIDIs from commercial games; everybody else certainly has done it! Original music is a great way to make your game stand out, but there's always so many avenues to meet that objective. Original music is much harder to write than an interesting plot, especially if you have no skill in the thing. So go ahead and use your rips, and do your best at what you're most talented at :). Oh, but try to make sure that the music you use isn't too recognizable... That is a problem that is pretty subjective, but, for example, you can be pretty confident that most people who'd play your game have heard Frog's theme song from Chrono Trigger and would immediately recognize it. So, Frog's song probably wouldn't be a good choice; and so on.

4. If your full, complete game were of the typical length of a finished amateur game (say, 6-10 hours long), it would probably take you about a year to make a really quality game. If you're aiming to make a much larger game, you'd be better off planning to release a 5-hour demo before a year elapses; that seems like a very doable goal to me :)!
What about hack and slashes? Is it ok to take graphics from someones game if I just want to use their "cave" tiles, or I see a nice fountain I want to copy? Something where I'd open it in an editor, copy them to my clipboard, then open my tileset, and paste them in an unused area. Would that be ok, or is that frowned upon?

and, although I said from someones game, I ask the same as someones shared tileset, such as from Chara's or something.
I single handedly created the latest RTP resurgence.
For your nudity question, I would call it ok if it fits with the gameplay, and fits nicely. Don't just through in a random nude girl, but if it makes sense, then it is good.

As for resources, I made a nice link topic in game development, here's the link:

Maybe that helps?

I really doubt that.

You really should. I was really being sarcastic.

...though I did notice a surge of RTP games after I initially released HR...

As far as RTP goes...

Yeah, "custom grafix" aren't preferred for their own sake. They USED to be... just the fact that games lacked any RTP at all meant it was automatically better.

However, a lot of games and demos are released, and it's nice to have variety. RTP is the RTP is the RTP, so you keep seeing the same character graphics in different games. It really takes away the novelty of someone's hard work attempting to make a new world.

As far as MIDIs...

I think the use of commercial game tracks are fine, as long as they're used well, and at least somewhat obscure. If I had a million years and no job, I could write entire soundtracks all day, but I do end up using commercial game music to supplement the fact that quality, inspired music takes me a long time to produce.
