Square needs to start making new games, so that they feel free to add Final Fantasy games, EVO, Chrono Trigger and Dragon Warrior games to the VC.

Right now (judging by their release schedule), 85% of Square's development team is working on remaking old games for new systems.
They really need to release Earthbound, yes.

My old cartridge is messed up. Randomly deletes save files.

EVO will probably make it before too long. Squenix only seem to be holding out on Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests, really. Or I guess I should say "series where a remake would be more profitable." So EVO, Robotrek, the Soul Blazer trilogy, and maybe even Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu ought to make it eventually. Actraiser, Hanjuku Heroes and King's Knight have all made it, for example.

So yeah, I don't think there's exactly an embargo on Squenix games for VC. Just the ones that would sell a million copies if they're re-released for DS or PSP, I wouldn't depend on. One of those occasions where only being a cult hit is an advantage, huh?

Also, in response to the Earthbound discussion, rumor has it that it'll be out before the end of the year.

In any case, the question on everyone's mind is, “WHEN is EarthBound coming out on the Virtual Console?!?!?!5? It was originally slated to be released this past summer, but for technical (and lame) reasons it wound up being pushed back like everything else Nintendo does. For those wondering why there was a big surge of staffer activity in the summer, now you know why. And now you know why the EB Funktastic Gameplay is delayed so long too Latest word says EB is planned to be released before the end of the year, and that it doesn't seem like there'll be any more delays. Take it with a grain of salt of course, this IS Nintendo.

Yay Earthbound. I'm unhappy with the original SNES version of BOF2 for being ridiculously long and poorly-translated in comparison with the GBA version, and there aren't any other RPGs on VC that are good except for Paper Mario, which isn't really that 'traditional.' I'd absolutely love to purchase Earthbound though. Here's to hoping we get some really good releases in the next couple weeks in the US, judging how mediocre the last couple weeks have been ;D.

All versions of Breath of Fire II are average at best. The GBA version has a run button, but the music and graphics were butchered too badly.
I can see a Chrono Trigger remake being extremely profitable. But I am encouraged about the possibility of EVO.

But, don't they get money/royalties anyway from the VC? It's like free money! I can't imagine it would be that hard to throw an already coded NES or SNES game onto the VC to be played by the Wii NES or SNES emulator...

Furthermore, any game that has already been remade for the Playstation AND/OR the DS AND/OR the Gameboy AND/OR the SNES should be on the VC. Like the original FF III, IV, VI, Dragon Quest I, II, III, IV. (Did FFV get a PS remake??). Anywho, SQUENIX YOU'VE MILKED THEM ENOUGH! THROW THEM ON THE VC! IT'S NOT LIKE YOU'D LOSE MONEY ON IT!

If they can still sell ports for full price on other systems....yeah, they would. $8 VC game vs. $35 GBA = -$27. Who's gonna buy the same game for four times the price when the only real advantage is portability and maybe an extra dungeon?

But Chrono Trigger was only really popular among RPG fans. And "RPG fans" isn't that big a demographic, especially if you limit it to "jRPG fans." It apparently only sold 300,000 copies in America. But while I was checking on those figures on Wikipedia, I found this:

The issue of the future for the Chrono games was brought up and clarification asked for, due to recent comments saying a sequel to Chrono Cross not being planned. In response, he stated that it certainly is not out of the question Chrono will make a return, and as for seeing Chrono Trigger return in any form (a port, remake or Virtual Console release â€" the last option currently being a 50-50 in terms of happening), it would come down to working out copyright details between the various members of the original team (most of which are no longer staff at Square Enix);
So it sounds like Chrono Trigger is headed to VC if the copyright details can be worked out....and that also lends some credence to the rumors that were flying around a while back that Mistwalker might get the rights to the series. Or at least shows where they might have come from, since we know a lot of the original team went to Mistwalker. Who knows?

Sadly he's not as optimistic about the Mana series, at least in terms of remakes or ports. I suppose VC is technically a port, but I'm holding out hopes that no plans for remakes/ports means that a VC is a possibility.
Chrono Trigger has sold more than 2.36 million copies in Japan and 290,000 abroad. The first two million copies sold in Japan were delivered in only two months. The game was met with substantial success upon release in North America, and its rerelease on the PlayStation as part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles package topped the NPD TRSTS PlayStation sales charts for over six weeks. This version was later re-released again in 2003 as part of Sony's Greatest Hits line, and, in recent times, Chrono Trigger has placed highly on all four of multimedia website IGN's "top 100 games of all time" lists. On the first, in 2002, the game placed 4th, while placing 6th on the second in early 2005, 13th on the third list in late 2005, and 2nd on the list for 2006.

Chrono Trigger was not only a best-seller, but also well received critically. Nintendo Power called it Square's "biggest game ever", citing improved graphics, sound, and gameplay over past RPG titles, while Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine described it as "original and extremely captivating", expressing particularly favorable responses to its graphics, sound and story. Additionally, IGN commented that "it may be filled with every imaginable console RPG cliché, but Chrono Trigger manages to stand out among the pack" with "a story that doesn't take itself too serious" and "one of the best videogame soundtracks ever produced".

However, other critics, such as the staff of video game websites RPGFan and RPGamer, have questioned the game's length, as it is shorter than most RPGs, and noted that its difficulty level is low as compared to many other RPGs. Overall, reviewers regarded Chrono Trigger's replay value as high due to the game's multiple endings, its gameplay as simple but innovative, and its story as "fantastic yet not overly complex".

Moreover, the game was included in GameSpot's "The Greatest Games of All Time" list released in April 2006, and also appeared as 28th on an "All Time Top 100" list in a poll conducted by Japanese magazine Famitsu.

I think Chrono Trigger was a really popular game. And not only among RPG fans.

And the VC market and GBA market does not completely overlap. I've never bothered with a gameboy or any other portable console because the only games I was interested in were usually remakes of NES and SNES games, or games that had similar games on home consoles (like, say, Kirby). I'd, however, buy Chrono Trigger on the VC (when I get a Wii). And I'd buy EVO. And probably all the DQ games and FF games. But I'd never buy them for the GBA/DS because I don't own or intend to own them.

Furthermore, by your logic, why make a port? SNES game is $90 vs. the $35 GBA = -$55. It's like Squenix wants to lose monies!

Anywho, my point is porting to the VC opens new markets to exploit.

This is a whole ton of speculation. There's 0 proof of Mistwalker getting the rights to the Chrono series. The copyright issues they speak of is the fact that people such as Yuji Horii and Masato Kato are doing their own things now. Horii stated he didn't necessarily have to make a Chrono game again because he do anything he wants in Dragon Quest.

The only important person that went to Mistwalker was Sakaguchi, and even then he was only a supervisor. Kitase and other Enix people were the main people in charge.

Sorry, I had been under the impression that it had been more of the people working at Square at the time. It wasn't speculation, it was assumptions based on faulty presuppositions!
