POINT-AND-CLICK ADVENTURE STYLE GAME! (OR WHATEVER THE HELL THOSE GAMES ARE ACTUALLY CALLED...)

I'm sure many of you folks are familiar with point-and-click adventure style games...

"Shadowgate" for example (for the NES)

Well, that's right, I'm planning on making one! I will admit most of the inspiration IS coming from "Shadowgate", I just love that game!

If you're still dumbfounded, check out this youtube video of the game...

Yup. So here's the deal; in order to reduce criticism, I'm not making a "fan game", but the game will be HEAVILY influenced by Shadowgate.

Here's a list of the similarities (or differences) my game will share with "Shadowgate":

- The game will, pretty much, be played exactly like "Shadowgate": point-and-click style gameplay, collect items, and simply just make it to the end.
- I am eliminating torches. You will not die by having you torch burn out, simply because I'm excluding them from the game.
- Except for battle sequences, I will be using music from "Shadowgate"
- I am not excluding automatic deaths (i.e. doing something in the game will get you killed, bringing trial-and-error into the mix.) However, I will attempt to make them more obvious that "Shadowgate" did, hoping it will not be too frustrating. I will have a significantly lower amount of automatic death locations that "Shadowgate", though.
- There will be battle sequences, which will be the main way to get killed. I will be implementing forced battles, in which the player must win to continue on (this does include boss fights), as well as undetermined "random battles". I say undetermined because I'm not sure how "random" they will be just yet.
- There will be cutscenes.
- The game will be divided into 5 chapters. I would like the player to take no more than 10 to 30 minutes getting through each; I will try to not make the game TOO long, that is if you know exactly what to do. The chapter titles are named after the area your exploring...
1 The Catacombs
2 The Castle Part 1
3 The Castle Part 2
4 The Tower
5 The Demon Realm
- In order to be successful in battles, you will need to find new equipment as your journey continues, as well as healing potions.

I'm not exactly sure why I'm putting this in the help and requests forum (please move it if seems necessary)

...except that I'd like you all to give suggestions, tips, and comments. Suggestions or questions mainly.

As soon as I begin to work on it, I will post this in the game adverts and feedback section.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK?!

sounds juicy and delicious

That's good....I hope.

This weirds me out. Mainly because I used to play a lot of adventure games where there's huge focus on exploring and solving puzzles rather than conflicts. In any case I hope you're making this in AGS (adventure game studio) rather than RPG Maker. Oh and this definitely goes into Game Feedback.

At the moment, I've not decided which system to make it in. I'm simply gathering materials and make graphics.

With that said, I've never heard of AGS, where can I pick that up and take a gander?

Sounds good to me, except... Is the game going to have the same graphical style and HUD layout as Shadowgate because that could actually get slightly irratating (at least for me).

If by that you mean NES graphics then yes...and somewhat of a modified Shadowgate HUD layout.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ It's free. Also if you want to see what it's capable of, try 5 Days a Stranger.

I checked out that game. I believe I will use AGS to make mine as well, it seems that it will suffice.

EDIT: Also, am I able to submit a game to RMN made with AGS?

EDIT 2: Well shit...now I'm not sure if I want to use AGS. It looks a bit more difficult to learn than anything else I know of right now.
