JOB INTERVIEWS

I've got my first interview in a long time for a community-based company as a Project Officer. I also volunteer there atm so the vacancy was internal and I applied thinking I've nothing to lose. However, it's based around working with young people (16-25) and I have no experience and I know for a fact that it'll be asked of me in the interview.

I know who my rivals are for the job and they seem to have jumped through the hoops more than me in terms of their career/education. I just don't know why I was selected, probably because I'm doing half the stuff anyway but does anyone have any tips on what to say to a question like "What sort of experience do you have working with youths?"
I know I can sizzle out but ugh, my mind is just blocked. :(

Also, what's the best thing to have before an interview? It's in the evening so I usually have tea then but I really don't think it'll do my gut any favours on the day!

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

The best advice I ever got for jobs, was when someone asks what your experience is, be very specific.
Also, look out for the question "What do you consider to be your greatest weakness/strength?" I recommend an answer that isn't "I'm a bit of a perfectionist." (Unless, of course, you are.)

As to the kids thing, well it may help to throw in a line about how although you don't have much in the way of experience with teens/younger peeps, you have always wanted to work with them/are willing to learn and try/are a pretty easy-going and/or social person. Only if it's true though.

You'll find that willingness to learn/try line can help a lot if you don't have experience.

If you mess up because of nerves, just apologise and tell them that you're a bit nervous, it shows that getting the job means something to you.

I'd also recommend knowing a bit about the position/company, but it seems you've got that covered since you've already had some experience in it.

Food-wise, maybe a salad or something light to tide you over until after the interview. You don't want to have your tummy rumbling, but you also don't want other problems during the interview either.

Good Luck! ^.^

Eye contact. Not too much, not too little.

Don't stare either. Look away on occasion.

When listening, don't constantly nod your head. Just after a point is made.

Don't use very much "mmm hmm" or "uh huh."

When answering questions, don't look off to the side. Makes you look like you're lying or exaggerating.

Tell them exactly what they want to hear, and if a question like "What sort of experience do you have working with youths?" comes up always answer truthfully (or at least stretch the truth within reason ;)) but also remember you can glorify even simple and mundane experiences.

Since you are in the interview chances are they already think you have something that their company wants. You don't have to prove it to them here, those type of questions are more to judge your preparedness and reactions............
All of the above posts are great advice. There's a saying that goes once you have the interview, you have the job. While don't take that too much to heart, just be confident in what got you their eye and just be honest. Don't pull anything extravagant and don't be scared shitless and you'll be fine.

As far as you specifically, they're going to ask you experienced based questions, and you have none. To make up for that, play up your intrinsic personality traits and qualities that you feel will be able to fill in the gap.
I hate interviews. Hate, hate, hate them.

My advice? Get yourself slightly tipsy beforehand...slightly...

Ha, I don't drink lol but man I felt dizzy in there.

Basically, this is how it went. I had a pot of yoghurt an hour or so before the interview. Felt good but then I started to get a funny feeling in my stomach (my daily struggle) so I took my pills. I went there quite early but straight away I was told to do a written exam! It wasn't that difficult but it caught me a bit off guard.

Anyways then came the grilling. I had three people grilling me with questions. All of them were fricking difficult to answer except maybe the first two "Describe yourself as a person" and "Why do you want to work for us?". The others need very specific examples, I could tell and I totally lost my cool during a couple of the questions.

During the interview, I had pulsating blackness which I never had before and I thought I was going to faint (stupid meds). Anyways, I think I did well at the end, as the interviewer was my coordinator where I'm based atm.

From reading their faces:

- Middle person: Not impressed
- Left person: Pleased
- Right person: Grinning/smiling (ugh that guy, funny person though)

I left with some self esteem though and I know where I need improving (that's talking with a direction, I got lost in my talk several times and had to trackback).

I don't think I'll cry over being rejected in all honesty as the salary was average. Still, I do genuinely want that job or it's back to uni for another shot.

Thanks for the tips guys, it really helped! Magi, I did exaggerated my example lol. I think he didn't buy it but whatever.
