Donnie Darko

I just saw this movie online after a recommendation of a friend stating it "was one of the most atmospheric movies I ever seen". I sat down to watch the movies and found myself getting drawn into it. I loved the story and the explanation of time travel as well as his self-sacrifice. Whenever I ever mentioned Donnie Darko, the Butterfly Effect always pop up in relation to it. I thought Donnie Darko was much better than the Butterfly Effect. The character was much more shattered emotionally, and provided a greater sacrifice at the end of the movie. Frank the rabbit himself was I thought a symbolism of Donnie's own desire to discover the truth outside this given reality. The music score was great especially with Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' Mad World. Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal worked good off each other.
I love this film, I own the DVD. It's one of those movies that just stuck with me. I've watched it a few times now and there's cool things you notice each time, like the wallpaper pattern in Donnie's house is the shape of Frank's mask etc.

Oh yeah, theres a sequel in the works, it looks terrible.

S.Darko was really bad I heard from reviews. That was going to be the next movie I saw since I loved Donnie Darko.

I hadn't seen the movie until recently so when I saw Seth Rogan I started cracking up.

on the real
Saw this yesterday at a friends house, it's definitely in my top 5 so far. Yeah, when I saw Seth Rogan I called bullshit, come on, hes in like every movie ever.

This movie was good the first time. Not worth watching again.

I didn't get what was so good about it, actually.

I also can't believe there is (going to be?) a sequel for this.
I am pretty much in love with this movie.

Of course you are. It is one of those movies that SEEMS really deep and serious.

It's a good movie but it doesn't make sense to do a sequel, just another solo movie which they couldn't let go down in peace. It's basically about his younger sister Samantha and how when she's 18 she goes through the same thing Donnie goes through.
Now back on the original movie. It's a weird but cool concept of time travel, but not really focused on it. The movie tells of how Donnie's weirdness actually makes him the hero of the story, others are taken by human imperfection while you can tell Donnie sees the true reality of the world as he exposes even if by the command of another (Frank) others and saves others will committing violent acts. It ultimately leads to him realizing due to the movie what he needed to do in order to delay the end of the world. As Gretchen his girlfriend tells him near the middle of the movie. To make one thing go away for all the negativeness to disappear. Which later leads to his self-sacrifice to save the people even those he will never have met (Gretchen).

I was surprised Seth Rogan in this, I think I can honestly state this was the only serious movie he was in.

Best Line: "Tell me, how exactly do you suck a fuck?"

Haha.

I don't know, I guess I can understand why people find it bordering on pretentious! I just find it a very visceral and intriguing film, and I think most people have control of what they get out of it. If they want it to be serious, then sure, it's serious. (If not, then they are probably like most of the people I've watched it with.) I've been asked to sit through it a lot since I've come to college, and I admit it loses some luster the more times you see it, but I still think it's a pretty well constructed movie.

I do think all of the nonsense time travel theories about it on IMDB or whatever are full of shit, though.

I honestly think the Smurfette thing is better but that line is also hilarious. I didn't think that id hear things like that and 'Fuckass' in any movie ever.
This movie is below average. The main problem is that the movie itself doesn't even know what it wants to be. Murder, Mystery, SCIENCE?!, Teenage Drama/Romance, Teacher trying to teach, INSECURE PEOPLE HIDING SECRETS(aka child porn), teenage psychological drama, stealing is wrong but with some exceptions, guy dressed up in dumb rabbit costume, teenagers doing stupid shit, SCIENCE!! vs Religion, POSSESED VANDALISM, fat asian chick fails regardless of effort, etc.

It's really just a mess of subplots with a shitton of vague messages. It's entertaining for a first time watch, but no classic.
